Chapter 2: CHAPTER TWO

Sometimes lightning strikes twice...

Smoke. That was the first thing I noticed as I took a turn into our street. The traffic which was slow at first came to a complete stop and I wondered what was going on, growing impatient I got out of the truck and walked at a quick pace towards home. There's no way the smoke's coming from my place I reassured the bad feeling I had in my gut. My heartbeat raced as I heard the sirens and saw the frightened faces of my neighbours roaming the street, but nothing compared to the heart sinking feeling I felt when I saw my home in flames. The firefighters were trying their best to control the fire but the flames were persistent, everything that was dear to my heart, all the memories I'd made, burning to ash. I stared in horror and disbelief, everything felt like it was moving in slow motion, I could only hear my heartbeat in my ears and the rest of the sounds felt so far away. One thought snapped me back to reality. Jane. I started panicking looking around.

"Jane! Jane! Has anyone seen Jane?"

I went closer to the burning house but a firefighter stopped me.

"I'm sorry but I need you to stand back."

"I live here...Tell me where's Jane?"

"If you mean the woman that was found in the house, I'm sorry to tell you but she's was found with serious injuries and has been rushed to the hospital."

"No... Jane." My voice cracked as the tears in my eyes flooded my cheeks. "Which hospital? Please I have to see her."

The firefighter looked at me with sympathy.

"Hey Donald!" He called out to a police officer. "Take this girl to the hospital where they took the woman found in the house."

"Sure, come on."

He led me to his car and opened the back door for me before he entered. The drive to the hospital was silent. My whole body was numb, I was breathing fast and couldn't stop crying. Jane meant the world to me, I couldn't imagine life without her and the thought of losing. No. I closed my eyes telling myself not to think that way.

"She'll be alright." The police officer reassured. I met his sympathetic gaze through the rear-view mirror and didn't know what to say. I just nodded. When he pulled up to the front of the hospital, I didn't even wait for him to stop, I opened the door and ran into the hospital stopping at the reception.

"Jane Blaire, blonde woman, she must've come in moments ago please tell me how is she?"

"Calm down." The nurse said, I was so out of breath, the nurse could hardly understand what I was trying to say.

"The lady that was brought in by the ambulance, she had been rescued from a burning house." The officer, Donald explained. I hadn't realized that he had followed me.

"She's been taken to the emergency room and is undergoing surgery." The nurse informed me. A heavy weight left my chest, I was glad that she was still alive but then I started feeling dizzy, I hadn't realized I'd been falling until Donald grabbed me, everything was blurry...

"Let's take her to a room, get the stretcher hurry." I heard the nurses say but their voices got drowned as I closed my eyes letting the darkness consume me.

It was late in the night when I finally regained consciousness, I had a splitting headache I moaned because my head was throbbing, where am I? I thought as I looked around the hospital room, the events that happened earlier in the evening hit me like a cold slap and I sat up, the nurse who was tending to me came in

"You shouldn't be up, stay in bed."

"What happened?"

"You fainted. Exhaustion, give your body some time to rest."

"But Jane..."

"You need to rest."

I didn't have the energy to argue with the nurse, she was right, I needed rest. I laid back down and fell asleep.

I woke up again, this time my headache was gone but I still felt a bit weak, I sat up and Charlotte quickly came to the side of the bed and hugged me. I was surprised to see her but I was so glad she was there

"We quickly came over when we heard what happened. Are you okay?"

"I'm fine."

Charlotte had come with her mother, Mrs Brown who looked just as worried as she did. She gave me a warm hug, it was a mother's hug, the type of hug that made me feel like everything was going to be okay.

"How are you feeling hun?" Mrs Brown asked.

"I'm fine, I just fainted that's all."

"I am so relieved. There was a young officer outside your room, he left just now. He told me to tell you to get well soon."

I smiled slightly, that was nice of him to go out of his way and stay there while I was unconscious.

"But Jane..."

"Easy there, I'm going to see if I can find out anything. I'll be back." Charlotte left, she gently patted my knee before leaving the room and a few minutes later came back with the doctor following her. I sat up straight, hoping that he had come with good news.

"Doctor. Tell me, how is she?" I asked.

"Well, the patient was brought with gunshot wounds to the head, shoulder and leg. She's suffered minor burns to her side luckily the surgeries have been a success and the bullets have been extracted but unfortunately she's fallen into a deep coma and we fear it might be long term."

Gunshot wound? Who shot her? I was so confused. Who would do such a thing to Jane? I know she wasn't the friendliest person but there was no way she'd have enemies who'd try to murder her.

"Can we see her?" Mrs Brown asked. "Please even if it's only for a minute."

"I have to come too." I said getting up from the bed.

The doctor nodded and led the way to the recovery room. When we reached the room, the doctor opened the door and I stared at the heavily bandaged Jane as I slowly walked in the room. My whole body felt numb again but there was a new feeling. As I walked to the side of the bed, the new feeling that I felt inside was certain, it was a lust for revenge.

"I promise you Jane even if it's the last thing I do, I'll find out who did this to you and I'll make them pay." I meant every word. I wasn't going to rest till I fulfilled my promise.
