Chapter 2: You Couldn't Have!
"Fallenlight, look out!" A young man in his twenties suddenly shouted as he sprang up from a stack of hay. Forehead covered in sweat, he looked around anxiously. 'Didn't I die? How...Where am I?'
Placing his two hands on his already pale face, he realized that he must have been reincarnated.
Curling his two hands into fists, he silently cursed his killer under his breath. "Undead King, that bastard! Killing me and Fallenlight...This is treason! High Treason!!"
'Ah~, I see that you're awake, my lord. Congrats to the both of us, it seems that my reincarnation spell worked perfectly!' A low and husky voice suddenly resounded in the young man's mind, causing him to look around warily.
Ignoring the young man's reaction, the low and husky voice continued, 'There's no need to act vigilant, my lord. I am currently on the run from both the Hell Beast King and the Lich King. Anyways, you must have a lot of–'
"Don't f**k with me, Undead King! Why did you kill me and Fallenlight?!" Augustus cut his minister off and cursed.
'Was this not what you wanted, my lord? To escape to the Mortal realm and ascend the Heavens to become a Celestial?' [Undead King]
Seemingly perplexed by his lord's temper, the Undead King could only sigh helplessly before thinking up reasons for his lord's dissatisfaction.
'After all, I've granted his wish in the most efficient way possible. Haiz...kids these days are so hard to understand.'
"That...was my wish...but you killed me! I'm not going to sit here and accept that you killed to realize my dream! That's not like you, Undead King! Speak! What do you want from me in return?!" [Augustus]
'It seems that even after reincarnation, your ability to see through the intentions of others did not disappear and instead grew sharper...Very well then, I'll cut to the chase.' [Undead King]
Calming down his ragged breathing after getting chased around the Underworld for a while now, the Undead King did a quick revision of his elaborate plan before continuing on.
'I will help you, my lord Augustus X, in becoming a Celestial under the condition that you will help me in finding some items in the Mortal realm.' [Undead King]
"Okay...how many items do you need?" Getting out from his hay bed, Augustus X inspected his body.
'It's...not much. I just need a hundred items or so. And also, don't think–'
"About running away because my life is hanging in your hands? Got it, got it. I've known you for at least 300 hundred years now, Undead King. You are a thorough and cautious necromancer. You'd never dare kill me and Fallenlight without having a trump card.
Looking at my new body, I see that my chest has a tattoo of your symbol. Is this your seal?? It looks amazing..." As Augustus X continued to blabber on, Undead King couldn't help but sweat buckets as his respect for his majesty grew even more.
He has only known his lord Augustus X for 300 years, yet his lord could read him like an open book.
Now that he thought about it, unless he used underhanded means, he wouldn't have been able to harm his lord, much less kill him with his necromancy or undead army.
Not only was Lord Augustus X strong, he was perceptive and knowledgeable as well.
It was a pity that his lord was born in an era of peace, else who knows how strong the Demon Kingdom could have become in the past.
Finally stopping to catch a breather, Augustus X proceeded to ask the Undead King.
"So...since I, the Devil, was killed and reincarnated into the Mortal realm, did you place my soul into the body of an undead or that of a human? This pale skin, these skinny arms, this corrosive breath...*gasp* You couldn't have?!"
'It is as you have thought, my lord. You've been reincarnated into the weakest race of all undead races, a zombie.'
Silence filled the room minutes later…
"I know you had my wishes in mind when you killed me previously, but I do want to ask you this....Why did you reincarnate me as a zombie? Why did you pick the zombie race? Zombies are considered to be cannon fodder my ancestors would have released upon their enemies back in the Great Underworld War! Zombies are walking meat shields that do not have any other purpose!!!"
Augustus X was fuming mad at this point.
He was a Devil, a great existence on par with the Lord of the Underworld, Hades and the Ghost King, Yama!
To think that in his next life, he would have been reincarnated into the weakest undead, a freaking zombie!
'Please understand, my lord. Zombies may be weak and were primarily used as cannon fodder during wars between the living and the dead, they still have their uses.
According to recent years of research and live experimentation, zombies are so weak that the living, be it humans or beastmen have a hard time detecting a zombie.
The percentage of a zombie getting detected when entering or leaving a city was only 20% each.
As long as the zombie's master knows what he's doing, a zombie can be pawned off as a human and no one will notice.
So please understand my lord, for you to ascend to the Heavens...this was the only way!' Undead King explained.
Maybe it was because of the Undead King who sneak attacked and killed him that Augustus X barely listened to anything his ex minister said as he was busy basking himself in the warm sunlight.
"Hm? Could you repeat what you've said, Undead King? I didn't hear any of it."
