Chapter 2: Echoes of the past I

LOCATION: Unknown

*Distant footsteps*

*panting sound*

In a certain jungle full of green and yellowish trees, a person in a white robe carrying a booklet could be seen running through the towering trees. Several other  figures could be seen chasing after him in a heated chase, these figures were all in black robes and they were carrying weapons in each of their hands.

"One can run, but one can't hide"

A towering figure who was bigger than the rest and seemed to be the leader yelled and mocked the escaping figure with a sneer.

"Marv, it's pointless to struggle, hand over the package"

The leader yelled again as he toyed with the man in white whose hair was disheveled and sweat dripping down his chin, his white robe was crumpled through the long run. The man took a desperate breath as his foot tripped on a tree root and he tumbled onto the ground. Yet as he did, he quickly got up and continued his escape. But the fall seemed to have narrowed the distance between them and the black robed leader was now close behind him.

"Jim, you and I have no enmity between us. Let me go and I'll pretend this never happened."

For the first time, the man in white spoke as he gritted his teeth with an unyielding expression on his face.

"Hahaha you think you are strong huh? Look whose cowardly escaping here."

The leader of the men in black yelled and mocked while snickering. His companions behind him laughed along as they brandished their swords with excitement and vigor. Even when running they didn't seem to run out of breath and it didn't seem to hinder their laughter.

Time was running out.

It had to be hidden. Mason knew it, everyone did and so Marv knew he had to hurry. The council would never believe what was written in the book. This book had what it takes to shake the world to its core. If it ended in the wrong hands, it would spell doom to the entire world.

He knew he had to destroy the book. Their sacrifice couldn't be for nothing.

A few kilometers later....

Jim persisted through the whole chase, he was panting for breath as sweat began to drop from his forehead. He was really starting to get annoyed with this unyielding rat. Even after a long chase, the escapee still persisted with his desperate escape.

Worst still, he ran like a madman that was on the verge of collapse yet they still couldn't catch up to him.

'How much stamina does this bastard have?'

Jim gritted his teeth as he chased behind the rat with his reddened eyes.

The crew behind behind them began to tire out, some of them were left behind after some rough evasion and tricks from Marv. Their jeering eyes long gone, replaced with heavy exhaustion

They started the chase for a while now, from finding Marv in their secret headquarters to chasing him out.

The sky was now dark, the shadows from the trees were moving. Weirdly, the place was getting cold.

Sure every night was cold, it was the law of physics but this, this coldness was strange.

Marv also noticed the odd surroundings. First was the trees around them, which were now twice as much compared to the jungle they've been running in.

The trees this time were different from the yellow and green leaf trees. The trees this time were ashen grey, the surrounding was surrounded by a whitish-grey fog that got thicker and thicker the more they advanced.

They stopped their feet as they look at their surroundings. Marv also stopped not too far away from them as he also backed up towards the rest.

Forgetting the fact that they were in a heated chase, everyone paid attention to their surroundings. They could no longer care about Marv nor the book he stole. At the end of the day, they couldn't decipher it. Even with their leader personally studying it, all they got is the title, Book of Doom.

In their minds, they knew that something was wrong, this place gave them a sinister feeling. Naturally they cared for their lives more than the damn book...

Cooo! Cooo!

Abruptly, they turned there heads towards the source of the sound deep in the mist, they listened fearfully.

Cooo! Cooo!

"Ca... Captain, d–do you hear that?"

One of the men asked as his legs shook out of fear.

"Y-ye... Ahem, yes. Victor, go check what's making that sound."

Victor, one of Jim's men had his pupil contracted when he heard the order.

"C–Captain why me?"

Victor asked fearfully while backing away slowly.

"Listen mate, you are the only one strong among us aye? Surely you are brave to?"

Jim gave his minion a stink eye as he watched his cowardice. He gritted his teeth as he spoke,

"Victor buddy, remember your oath, you swore to be brave remember?"

Victor fidgeted and said,

"Captain you once said we have strength through numbers, if I leave now, it'll be weakening ourselves."

The men behind Jim mumbled in agreement. They knew if they don't agree, with Victor's stubbornness, one of them may end up checking the sound.

Seeing his crew agreeing with Victor's statement, Jim had no other choice but to let it go. After all, Victor wasn't entirely wrong, they had strength through their numbers.

"Fine, but keep your mouths shut, everyone stick together and.... Where's that rat?"

Jim and his men were startled to discover that Marv, whom they've been chasing wasn't among them.

Thinking about it, they'd not heard his voice throughout the occurrence as they were too busy arguing among themselves.

"Everyone, don't panic. That bastard must've been eaten. Don't separate from each other and keep your eyes open"

Arrgh!

Jim turned to look and noticed one of his men on the ground with his neck bleeding as he twitched on the ground before he slumped dead on the ground

"Shit– shit– shit He's dead."

Victor exclaimed in fear as he looked in horror at the lifeless corpse on the ground.

"Shut up Victor..."

"We're gonna die, we're gonna die, we're gonna d..."

Slap!

"Victor get ahold of yourself and stop panicking..."

Jim angrily spoke as he slapped Victor who was instantly silenced as he looked behind Jim.

"What are you standing around for Victor? Stand on the defense line."

Jim spoke again as he watched Victor's mouth agape.

"C–C–Captain, b–behind you."

Victor spoke fearfully as he pointed behind Jim in horror.

Jim curiously turned his head to look behind him and...

(A/N: T-VON now just means... Well, I really have to stop revealing things too early. Its a weakness of mine. Anyway I have to learn keeping the cards to myself. I'm learning to say something without revealing too much information lest it destroys everything. I admit its hard to get a good scenery but if you can give me some of your ideas it won't be hard to give it a spot in this web of words.)
