Chapter 6: CHAPTER 6: A DUEL TO REMEMBER

Both Zachary and Ada raise their wands. Ada nods to Zachary indicating his move. Zachary pulls back his wand and casts it forward. As he makes the movement he yells out, "Stupefy!"

As the spell comes towards her Ada smirks and makes a circular motion. "Protego." The moment after she casts it, both spells collide, the stupefy spell being canceled out. Without a second thought Ada waves her wand with a sinister smile. "Bat-Bogey!"

As the spell flies towards Zachary he raises his wand. He starts to make a circle motion and almost doesn't succeed as the spell flies fast towards him. "P-protego" As the spell hits he steps backward from the force.

Using this as an opening, Ada makes a visible gesture so that the kids could see and speaks, "Locomotor Mortis."

As soon as the spell connected to Zachary his legs froze in place, causing him to fall backwards. The boy however did not let this inconvenience him and lifted his wand. "Relashio!"

Completely stunned that a second year would know this spell, Ada didn't defend. She allowed the spell to connect to give the young boy some hope.

"Good shot. Accio." As she gestures, her wand flies back into her hand. "However this is the last spell I'll cast." She raises her wand and waives it. "Langlock."

The spell immediately connects to Zachary as he stands up. He starts mumbling trying to speak. "That's the tongue lock curse. You won't be able to make any verbal spells."

Zachary thinks for a few seconds before pointing his wand at his mouth. He mumbles something and then with a smirk, "Deprimo!"

Ada raised her wand to defend, but remembered what the spell was. The floor in front of her suddenly exploded. The debris blocked her vision as another spell suddenly flew towards her. "Bat-Bogey!"

Closing her eyes, Ada was hit. A sudden spew of boogers streamed from her nose and took the form of bats flying away. The group of kids watching burst into laughter as Ada wiped her nose from the feeling.

"Zachary! What did we say about spells that cause damage." Zacaria Stepped up, stopping the duel.

"Sorry sir. I just wanted to win, that's all." The boy looked down at his feet and waited for more words to come from his father. However, the next person who spoke was Ada.

"Good job with the distraction." Zachary looks up as soon as he hears Ada's voice praising him. "A distraction can go a long way in a duel." Ada turns towards the kids as all eyes are locked on her now. "It's a more advanced technique, so wait until your teacher actually instructs you to do it. In this duel it can be seen that even a second of distraction led to my loss."

Zachary beamed as he heard he admit that she lost due to that last ditch effort at hitting her. He knew that she went easy on him, as she had time to cast Protego, but chose not to. Matthew looks up onto the stage, smiling at the beautiful woman as she gives her lesson to the kids.

After the short lesson, Ada steps down from the stage and walks over to the now waiting Zacaria. "I appreciate you letting him win, but what about teaching him a little humility?"

Ada smiles and looks back at the kids, who at this moment were sparing with each other. "He knows humility the moment I tripped him. From that point he was just floundering to try and get a hit off. Letting him win though?" She smiled and looked back at Zacaria. "He's a great duelist already, letting him have the win will cement his love for dueling and get him to try even harder to outdo us in the future."

Zacaria smirks and nods. "This is why I'm happy to say you're my student. Knowledge like that would make a wonderful teaching tool." He looked at Ada waiting for her response.

Ada's smile fades slightly as she says, "I do love the feeling of teaching sir, but my love for tracking and capturing beasts is all encompassing. The only thing that matters more is my...." A high pitched scream sounded off in the background.

Zacaria immediately went over and saw his son on the floor shaking. "W-what happened?" He gets down next to Zachary and pulls his wand out, his hand slightly trembling. He begins to cast some sort of spell and Zachary begins to shake less.

A girl who was practicing with Zachary had tears trailing down her face. "I-I only used a disarm s-spell and he allowed it to hit him! T-then he fell to the ground and started shaking!" Everyone knew that Zachary was the teacher's son, so when he went down the girl began to panic.

Ada quickly walks over and grabs the girl's hand and smiles at her. "Hey there, what's your name?" She asks while trying to calm her.

"J-Jessica." The little girl stuttered as she spoke.

"Hey Jessica, my name as you probably heard is Ada. Don't be afraid. We know you didn't do anything wrong. Can you take a deep breath in for me?"

The little girl nodded and tried to take a deep breath in. Her breathing was slightly jagged as the tears continued to flow from her eyes. Ada continued smiling at her. "Good job. Now slowly exhale with me." Ada took a deep breath in and while staring into the girls eyes they both slowly exhaled. The little girl was slightly faster, but she stopped crying.

They both spend some time breathing and once Ada saw that Jessica was a little more calm, she once again smiled at her. "Are you feeling a tad better now?" The little girl nodded, but did not smile back.

After a few minutes of calming the little girl down a nurse came rushing into the room with a stretcher. They lay it next to the boy and move him on to it. The principal helped carry the boy out of the room and down the hall. Matthew looked over at Zacaria who was now sitting on a stage with his eyes closed.

Matthew walks over to him and sits down to his right. "Is everything ok?" He asks, looking at the children who were scared and whispering.

"No, there was some curse put on him that I've never seen before. Before you say anything, I don't blame Ada or the other children. This was advanced dark magic." Zacaria put his face in his hands and breathed. "However, I have to be strong. Zachary may be my son, but these students are also my children."

Matthew puts his hand on Zacaria's shoulder and smiles. "That's why we're happy to call you our teacher." Zacaria smiles at this, his already tearful eyes becoming more wet.

"Kid, you're gonna make an old man cry. Thank you though, I needed to hear that." Zacaria stands up and walks over to the kids and calms them down. With that Ada and Matthew take their leave.

"What do you think that was?" Ada says slightly worried about how they left things.

Matthew grabs Ada's hand and walks with her feeling her tension. "Zacaria said that it was some sort of dark magic. Something that second years couldn't do." Ada nods and squeezes his hand gently as they make their way back to his shop.

They walk back to the Clearview Wand Shop and kiss. "Make it home safe. If anything happens let me know immediately." Matthew hugs Ada and her arms wrap around him as well.

A few seconds go by before they let go of each other. After Ada disapparates Matthew goes inside and locks the door behind him. At this moment his breathing becomes heavy and he falls to his knees.

"This can't be." His hand begins to shake as he makes his way over to a shelf. He pulls out a newspaper clipping showing a tall, well tanned man with the headline, "A dark day in wand making"

Matthew sits on the floor trying to calm himself down as a knock on the door echoes through the building. He stops breathing, staring at the door. Another knock echoes out. He gets up off the floor and walks to the door.

"Matthew, please answer the door. This is Auror Durham and I'm here with an associate. We need to talk." Joe's voice could be heard from the other side. Matthew begins to shake as he reaches for the handle.
