Chapter 2: The Battle

"CHIDORI!" His voice was hoarse and scratchy.

His speed grew exponentially.

Rin heard his scream and after pausing a second as through she wasn't sure what to do, she side stepped.

Warning bells rang inside his head, but he forced himself to ignore it all. He couldn't afford to be distracted. Not now. Not when his and Rin's lives were on the line.

Kakashi's hand plunged into the shinobi's chest with a great force from all the speed he had built up from the attack.

He plunged through skin, heart, muscle.

And might of felt a vindictive satisfaction, if not the onset of exhaustion settling over him like a blanket.

Rin was saved...

Kakashi was not.

He collapsed from Chakra exhaustion - from using the Chakra he didn't have.

He had to force his fluttering eyelids open.

Rin flew around him, deflecting the attacks with a ferocity not at all delicate.

She teared through flesh. Broke bone.

And the number and severity of the wounds on her body grew.

Her eyes were fierce and unyielding, but Kakashi knew she wasn't going to last much longer.

The mist-nin were slowly, but surely pushing her back.

He tried to push his already worn out and nearly destroyed muscles up, to be used again. To fight. He needed to protect Rin. He needs to protect Obito's legacy and keep his promise.

He couldn't fail now. Not when he had failed so many before.

So even if Kakashi broke his entire body he wasn't going to let those shinobi hurt Rin.

He pushed.

And he puked blood.

The metallic taste flooded through his mouth and the liquid sprayed from his mouth.

Everything hurt.

And with an action that nearly brought him to his knees, he...stood.

He grit his teeth and choked on his blood as he flung a kunai at the mist-nin sneaking up on Rin.

It embedded in his target's head with a squelch.

He threw another, but this shinobi was prepared and it with a water bullet just shot right back him.

He had to move his body to dodge.

But Kakashi soon found it. Just. Wouldn't move.

It hurt like hell.

But Kakashi was able to evade the attack and fight the resistance in his body.

And was able to move fast enough to clip the mist-nin in the face.

He deserved to be proud of that.

Rin was wheezing with a senbon to the lung.

He knew neither of the were going to last much longer.

Rin seemed to know it too, risking to give him a worried glance in a tussle with a nin.

Kakashi moved closer toward her to take the opportunity to kill the nin when he was striking at the side of Rin's head.

Blood splattered onto Kakashi's hand.

With all his strength, Kakashi jumped on another nin, heavily relying on the sharingan an to guide him and have the edge over his opponents.

He stabbed and slashed with his kunai over and over again.

All until every last one of those bloody mist-nin died.

And as he was about to turn away, Rin grabbed his arm and healed him before Kakashi could dissuade her and gently push her away.

Kakashi felt the weight on his body lighten. But his feeling of relief soon became one of worry as Rin collapsed.

She grinned at him wearily.

"I'm past my limit. I guess... this is as far as my abilities will take me." Her tone seemed a bit self deprecating.

"I tried quickly healing you, but it really took too much out of me. You should be safe now Kakashi-kun. Go... go back to Konoha now."
