Chapter 36: Glimpse of Humanity

Agatha eyes thinned, "Why? What do you mean why? Sicarius, you don't have powers!"

"I'm sorry Mother, but what does not having powers have to do with anything?" Sicarius muttered stoned faced as he stared at his mother who seemed to be looking for the right words.

"Jeez," Hanzel chuckled, for some reason, he was still smiling. "How am I supposed to focus on eating."

Saying that he took a bite of his meal. While he, Princess, and even Sicarius could still eat just fine, Venus was having difficulty to even chew properly.

"Sicarius, "Agatha looked at her boy with a sympathetic look, "For someone to enter status 3 with no powers at such a young age is already an amazing feat. You don't have to struggle to get stronger anymore."

"But we have a war to fight don't we?" Sicarius reasoned,

A bang resonated in the room as Agatha slammed her palms on the table. "Don't even say that! This is not your war to fight Sicarius! There are humans with powers that can literally devastate a continent! They are the ones that bear the responsibility to fight against the sins!"

Sicarius sighed, slowly he placed the spoon on his hand on the table, "What am I supposed to do then?"

"You can stay here in this city." Agatha said with a much calmer voice, "You can be a police officer like your father, or keep teaching kids at the tower."

"One day the sins will reach us here, Mother," Sicarius said, his voice soothing as he lowered his eyebrows, "If I'm not strong enough by then we'll all die."

Agatha calmed herself. She gritted her teeth, seemingly about to let out a yell and yet that was the only burst of anger that escaped from her, however, her eyes started to redden, "I don't care about that Sicarius. At least we would all die together."

"Woah woah woah." Hanzel butted in, "No speaking of death at the dinner table."

Agatha turned her attention to Hanzel with a glare. "Aren't you worried? Our son has lived at the tower for so long, only visiting us occasionally. That shouldn't be the case! I haven't been with my child enough and then suddenly he's getting strong enough to actually join the war! Oh! And what's this about a duel, you against a divine powered fire powered?! If I see you getting burned I'll stop the battle myself!"

So she was worried.

"And don't you like your name!? Why is everyone calling you Sicarius!? Even I'm calling you that now!"

And quite possibly stressed. Agatha seemed to be letting all her stresses out and Sicarius merely listened.

Her worries were very human. Life is short and in the end, they will all die, either for natural reasons or due to the sins. She'd rather spend the rest of her short life with the ones she loves rather than for them to die in a pointless war.

In Sicarius's eyes, these few years of training were well spent. To Agatha each year that passed without Sicarius only seemed to be a waste. She wanted to spend time with her son, but sadly, Sicarius had his sights far away from what the normal mortal thinks.

Regardless, Agatha was his mother in this world. Usually, Sicarius would pay no heed to the words of those who know less, however, this time he'll try to convince her. It was one of the small things he could do to pay them back for giving him their child as a vessel for reincarnation.

"Don't you trust me, mother?" Sicarius said, "Don't you believe that I will save the world? And even if I don't, I'd be happy living the life of one who tried to be great. If ever I agree to your words and stay here with you, I'll be filled with everlasting regret of not fighting for my people and dread knowing that someday the sins will reach all the corners of the world."

"Of course, I trust you Sicarius!" Agatha replied, her eyes filled with frustration "I trust you and I know you're going to get way stronger than you are now."

She took a deep breath and after pausing a minute, started to actually begin to touch the food on her plate, "Fine! Fine! But if you're going to get stronger you better be so strong that you won't die until the Sins have vanished from this Earth."

The conversation ended abruptly like that, but Sicarius didn't mind. He filled his plate once again and began feasting. Only a couple of minutes later did they start to finish their meals, and once they did, Sicarius had Princess and Venus wait for him outside.

With both girls gone Sicarius paced toward his mother and held her hand to her surprise. Sicarius had never shown such behaviors before in this life, Agatha couldn't help but smile, even more when she heard the words he said.

"It would be best if you do not worry Mother." Sicarius said with a change of expression, "Whatever happens to me it is my own choice and I would never regret such choices, however, I'll try to not get myself harmed for your sake and mine." '

Agatha was smiling as wide as ever, and gradually her eyes reddened as tears gathered in her eyes as she eyed the rare expression on Sicarius's face. Even Hanzel, who was always smiling, seemed to have been shaken up enough to lose his smile for a bit from shock, before laughing his heart out tenderly.

"I've always thought that your face was paralyzed because you wouldn't ever make any expressions." Agatha sniffled, "I'm so glad that isn't the case."

A flash of light ensued as Hanzel took a picture of the moment. In his phone was the image of Sicarius smiling softly as he held his teary-eyed mother's hands. After taking the photo, Hanzel neared his family and caught them all in one big hug. Sicarius didn't mind such things. To him, such affectionate actions were alien, but moments like these were things that all living beings cherished. Funnily enough, past memories that used to be forgotten seemed to pop up in his mind, blurry but seemingly clearing up over time since he was born in this world. Since when did he keep these memories in his mind? Sicarius didn't know and didn't care, when he finishes his mission in this world these memories will all fade away into the past, just as they always have.

The family dinner ended with a hug. Princess and Venus waited by the door, both with teasing looks as Sicarius approached.

"I didn't know you had emotions." Princess muttered with a thin smile, "Now I feel like you're actually a human."

"I know!" Venus joined, "Imagine my surprise when he smiled!"

"You know, it is considered rude to peek during family discussions," Sicarius said, "Don't you have any manners."

"Oh shush, we all know you already knew we were peeking from the start" Venus giggled, "I'm just glad that was sorted out. I couldn't even eat properly!"

Sicarius could only shake his head as they proceeded to go back to the tower. With his mother's worries being eased there was nothing else to focus his attention to. He had a battle to prepare for, classes to teach, some training to do, and research to do about Vision. Sicarius knew of a reliable source of information, and it was an old grumpy man that claimed to be omnipotent.

"Venus, where do you think the old man would be now?"
