Despite all the words said against him and the evidence that was in front of her, Princess Marie felt a dagger being driven into her heart each time she resisted Henry. 

When weeks went by and she realized he wasn't going to respond to her letter, her stomach filled with nervous regret, and her heart rate was elevated even if she was just sitting there. 

Was this what regret felt like? It was a new feeling she had never experienced before. 

She didn't keep the other letters, but the last one he sent her, she kept because he asked her if she missed him. She wanted to answer passionately and furiously but all she could muster up was a straightforward, emotionless response.
