Chapter 2: Rabbit? Deer? Fox?

(Dominic's POV)

"Dominic." Someone called out to me. I turned around to see who it was, but wasn't surprised at all for it was no other than Megan.

"Why did you suddenly start running?" She asked me.

I turned to look back into the crowded hallway of Duskwood High and disappointingly answered, "No reason. Just thought I saw someone."

Megan looked towards the hall where I was still looking and then threw her arms around my neck. "You know you keep getting weirder everyday." She joked.

Turning back my attention to her, I removed her hand from around my neck and said, "And you keep getting more clingy."

"Well I gotta be, I'm your little sister after all." Megan mumbled as she followed behind me as I was walking away. "That's what we made up for everyone to believe to not arouse suspicion. We needed to sell the lie that I look like my grandpa." I answered hinting that I heard what she said.

Megan sucked in her cheeks and sneered, "I still don't understand why you wanted to come back to Duskwood of all places. Especially after what happened with..." She quickly paused and slapped her hand over her mouth.

I came to halt for I knew exactly what she was going to say. I looked to the ground and inhaled deeply then raised my head up and started walking forward again. A still partly sorry Megan quietly continued walking behind me.

I know that Megan doesn't usually think before she speaks, so I thought brushing it off was only fair. We both made our way towards the basketball gym and as she sat on the bleachers; I headed to the locker room to change for practice.

"Dominic, I thought you weren't coming today?" Aaron asked slapping me on the shoulder.

I knew it was Aaron because of the smell. He usually smells of strong cologne, but because of my nature I could smell the stench of cigar hiding under the sweetness of perfume.

"I wasn't, but I got nothin' better to do." I lamely answered throwing my clothes into the locker and slamming it shut. Soon after other members of the team started flooding the locker room, talking and trying to shout over the other.

Suddenly my ears started ring. I placed the palms of my hands over my ears and rushed out the locker room. I stopped when the noise became faint and started breathing slowly.

Although I have been a vampire for about 199 years, I still never got used the the feeling of my sense of hearing adjusting to hear everything shifting from one to another in a loud place. Whenever that happened, my ears would start ringing, making me frustrated.

As a vampire it is my nature to drink blood, but no vampire can control the hunger when they are frustrated. We just lash out and feed on whatever is near that has a heart pumping blood through their veins, or sometimes we just kill or break things.

After I calmed down I headed towards the court and waited for the other boys to come. We played a game of five on five to 20.

After practice I changed and met Megan in front of the gym.

"Took you long enough." She scoffed.

"I talked to the guys for a while." I answered her.

We headed to the parking lot and walked towards the black Chevy Impala. I hopped in behind the driver's seat and Megan hopped in the passenger seat next to me.

"Where are we going today. Forest? Hospital? Blood-bank?" She asked twisting her lips.

I started the car and drove out the parking lot and I considered where we would go hunt. Then I answered, "Forest. We've had too much human blood these past few days. Keep it up and we might start having problems controlling our hunger at school here. We need to consume animal blood to create a balance again."

Hearing this Megan chuckled, "Remember when you first found me. You had me drink animal blood for months so I could be able to fight my urges for human blood."

I smiled, "Yeah, though for the first few weeks every time you had consumed animal blood you always brought it back up."

A few minutes later we were already on the outskirts of Duskwood. I parked the car on the road next to the forest and turned it off. It was already dark and both Megan and I headed into the eerie forest.

We walked deep inside and started talking, "Spit it out Megan." I ordered looking into the night ahead of me.

I could tell that there was something she wanted to say, for I could feel how tense she was.

"Errr... about earlier, In...in the hallways at school?" She stuttered.

"What about it?" I asked as I continued walking.

"Well, I'm sorry. I know it's a sensitive topic for you." She made out.

When I heard this I slowed down and then stopped. Turning to her I said, "Don't worry about it."

She looked at me and started to complain, "It's just you never really told me the story of what actually happened. The most you ever told me about your past here was that there was a guy named Liam who changed you. And whenever I ask about him, all you say was that he's dead, and he's never coming back."

I bit my tongue when she said this. But I couldn't blame her because she was right. I never really told her about what happened because it was a painful memory. No matter how hard I tried I could never forget it, so I chose to never speak of it.

Yes, Liam is dead and it was all my fault. I couldn't protect him.

In that moment I remembered his smile and as I did a tear rolled down my cheeks. Megan must have sensed that and she changed the subject, "But either way, I just want to know, If it's such a painful memory, why did you choose to comeback to the place where it happened?"

I sniffled and smiled. I couldn't see her face, but I could tell that she was worried.

"Maybe it's the guilt. Don't worry I'm fine. Besides among that painful memory there were many happy ones." I assured her.

I could feel her as she became calm and a little more assertive of me. We continued walking again and as we entered the forest a little deeper we could start hearing rustling in the bushes around us.

"Rabbit, deer, fox? What do you want?" Megan asked me as we quietly stopped where we were.

Without answering her, in vampire speed I zoomed deeper into the forest in front of us and disappeared behind the bushes. Suddenly my fangs popped out and I sank them into the neck of deer that was there. As I continued to drink it's warm blood, I could feel the heartbeat starting to slow down. Then it stopped, and the deer was dead.

Many would think that animal blood was as good as a human's, but no. In fact, it's really disgusting. Us vampires who drinks blood from animals hate it, but although it tastes bad, it keeps us from dying.

Human blood increases the powers of a vampire. By drinking animal blood our strength and other vampire powers are not even half of what we can do, Our power depletes. Since I have been doing this for a long time, I got used to the taste and the upsetting feeling in my stomach. But as for Megan she's only been a vampire for about 50 years, so for her it's harder to digest it.

I pulled my fangs from the neck of the deer and placed my hands over its eyes to close it. Soon after Megan appeared behind me. "Deer!" I answered to her previous question, while getting up from the ground.

As she walked passed me going towards the deer she joked, "And there goes Bambi."

"I'll meet you at the car." I then said to her as I headed away. Only for a brief moment I heard as she placed her fangs into the neck of the deer and drank. I vampire speeded back to car and got in.

While waiting for Megan, I thought of what she said in the forest. "Right, It does hurt being back here." I sadly sighed.

I stretched and opened the glove box of the car, then pulled out a black journal that was under all the papers and Megan's make-up's.

I looked at the journal for a while before deciding to open it, but before I did, I raised it to my nostrils and inhaled deeply. A normal human would only be able to smell the perfume stenches and powder that was on the journal due to being around Megan's stuff in the glove box.

However, for me, because of only feeding on animal blood if I inhaled hard enough, I could smell Liam's smell that was still on the journal. Though it would be no problem if I was feeding on human blood, just a slight sniff and I would be able to smell all the scents his journal holds. Yes, this was Liam's journal, and probably the only thing I have left of him to which still contained his scent.
