Chapter 19: 19: Dangerous desires

Adnan woke up with a nasty headache. He shivered slightly from the cold hitting his skin. He opened his eyes and inspected his surrounding. Feeling something off about where he was.

He found that he was in the grand room the king had given him. The once-furnished room was now desolate without one piece of furniture in sight. The bright curtains had been changed with black curtains covering the window. Making it hard to pinpoint what time it was.

Adnan felt an itch on his face. He raised his hand to scratch it. "Arghh," he screamed in pain as the chains on his wrists tightened at his moment and the hooks attached to them pierced through his skin causing him to bleed.

He wasn't able to hold his scream as the chain around his neck constructed and began to choke him. Adnan forced himself to remain motionless as his mind tried to find the reason as to why he was in the chain.

The boy focused on his thoughts to distract himself from the immeasurable pain coursing through his body. The last thing he recalled was standing with Soren and King Javier at the top of Mount Sisioli before he started feeling strangely dizzy.

Soren seemed pissed at the fact that the king opened his arms and embraced him. Adnan was aware of the influence Soren held in the palace. He figured it was the reason he was chained up and locked away.

As his mind drifted away from his pain. Adnan was able to relax, and as he did so the chains gave him room to breathe. The chains had sensors in them, they could tell when he moved and when he was relaxed.

Adnan blinked.

The words of the old man rang in his mind. Adnan wished he had taken them to heart and listened to the man. He was right about everything.

The King had given him hope of freedom and he became careless. Forgetting his place as a slave and letting his emotions get the better of him. He reached out to get the warmth of a star and he fell, faster than his mind could process what happened.

Adnan bit his lips, enduring the pain of the open wounds on his wrists and neck. The metallic scent of blood wafted in the air as hot tears wet his face. In his moment of weakness, Adnan focused on a bright moment to forget about his present.

The only memory in his mind worth remembering was King Javier. How warm the king felt when he was in his arms. His rich smokey minty scent captivated Adnan's nostrils when he got a taste of the scent. Javier's smile when he acted childish and clung to him as though they had known each other since forever.

Javier's sweet voice when he promised him freedom. When the king appeared in the pool and didn't get angry about his presence there. Every moment with the king was the only positive memory he had in his mind.

Adnan knew the king for a day yet he had memories that could get him through an eternity of darkness. The frown on his face vanished. A smile bloomed on his face as the vivid image of the king came into view.

The boy stared at Javier's face in his mind and lost himself in the king's ever-changing eyes. He saw the king in different lights and he loved each view.

Each version of the king he had the pleasure of meeting melted his heart. The best sight of the king was when he was beside Soren. His eyes would glimmer like he was staring at the brightest star in the sky. When he had Soren in sight it was as though he was with the moon, something rare and one-of-a-kind that is there to eliminate the darkness in his life.

Adnan didn't notice when his thoughts drifted dangerously to the king. He failed to see his mind and body developing dangerous desires for the king. But at that moment he had found his own moon even though it didn't belong to him.

The boy pictured himself in Soren's place in the memory of being in Soren's room. To be the one with whom Javier shared such an intimate glance and beautiful moments of true passion.

His face lit up at the thought. Javier had trusted him enough to open up about his fears and he too got to open his heart to the King. It was a rare moment that meant the world to him. It was the best feeling ever, to step into a different world than his and not feel like an outsider.

Adnan dared to dream of a place where he and the king weren't separated by titles. A place where the two of them could be free with each other. Be able to hold a relation other than master and slave. A relationship with meaning and bound, line friendship.

"Open the doors," a commanding voice sounded outside the room breaking his daze. Adnan frowned.

The doors to the room were opened. The imperial queen mother and the queen stepped inside. Walking side by side before the doors were sealed shut behind them.

Adnan didn't change positions to glance in their direction. Afraid the chains would pierce through his bleeding body.

"You are awake, good," Queen Tamira spoke out. She ambled forward and stood right beside Adnan's body. And faced down to meet his gaze. "What happened when you left the palace with the King and the dragonling?" she asked the puzzling question everyone had at the palace.

A question that was impossible for Adnan to answer. He had assumptions about what went down but not the actual event.

"I asked you a question, slave. Why did the king only return with you and not Soren?" Tamira questioned him further. "Where is the dragonling and why did the king act as though Soren isn't coming back?"

Her questions made Adnan's heart beat in panic. Never did it occur to him that Soren would leave the king's side. Adnan figured the conflicts between them had been settled overnight.

"I am afraid that a day will come when my efforts are insufficient and he ends up leaving my side," the king's words echoed in his mind.

Because of a lowly slave like him a king's worst fear became a reality. Adnan was filled with guilt. His heart began to break for Javier.
