Reina and her brother Axel arrived home to find a group of ferocious looking men in black trashing their house. Their mother Nova and sickly younger sister Annie had been tied down and kneeling in front of a fat middle aged man who was sitting and dining like a king.
"Mr Smith, I assure you that we'll pay off every single penny that we owe you. Can you please let my daughter go. She's sick and can't take this torture" Nova pleaded.
"Pay?. Even if l sold off your entire family it still wouldn't reach the three million your family owed me." He sneered. "Your little lives are worthless to me but if you like l can sell the little one. She's a budding beauty" He jeered, laughing lecherously at Annie.
" Don't you dare have any design on my sister"shouted Axel. He charged towards Mr Smith wanting to attack him but get restrained by his men who punched and kicked him to the ground.
Reina rushed to her mom and sister and quickly started to untie Annie fearfully hugged her mother, hiding in her embrace.
"How dare you treat my family like this. The fact that we are owing you money doesn't mean you can treat my family like slaves". Reina fearlessly berated Mr Smith.
However, instead of being angry, he smiled and walked towards her, "You're so fierce as always. But I love it. My little kitty.
Standing so close to her, Reina looked at the fatty man in front of her with undisguised disgust and repulsion.
"Marry me my little kitty and your family can enjoy wealth their whole life. The three million dollars will be a token of my love for you." He proposed while he leaned in to smell her sweet scent making her stomach churned.
"My sister is not for sale. Stay away from her you sick old ogre". Axel screamed, struggling to break free from his captors.
"I'll rather die than marry you".Reina spat, glaring fiercely at Mr Smith. She took out the envelope from earlier and handed it over to Mr Smith. "There's five thousand dollars in there. It should be enough for the monthly payment"
One of the men came forward to take it while Mr Smith smoke nonchalantly.
" I'll give you people a month to pay back my money in full or be prepared to marry me whether you like it or not my little kitty" Mr Smith declared before walking away with his men.
After they left, Mommy Nova broke down in tears. "This is clearly asking for our lives. Where can we get that amount of money from in a month. This bullying is too much".
Hugging his mother, Axel assured her that he'll think of something. It took the family a while to get their back in place and clear out all the mess. Dinner was tasteless for them as no one was in the mood to eat.
How were they able to incur such a huge loan? Actually it was their father who was a gambling addict and got them into so much debt.
He also took half a million loan from Mr Smith and run off to europe with another woman leaving them to pay off the mountain of debts.
In a span of two years, the loan has increased to three million due to its unreasonably increasing interest.
To make matters worse, they have to save money for Annie's treatment. She has acute leukemia. The family does all sort of jobs to generate money for the expenses weighing down on them.
In a shared bedroom, Reina gently tucked Annie in bed after giving her medicine. She gently stroke her bald heard and lovingly kissed her forehead, "May the angels keep you safe Annie." she prayed and laid down beside her.
Looking up at the hanging artificial stars on the ceiling, "I'm sorry". She apologized in a quiet voice.
"I'm sorry for being a liability to everyone. Because of me, we are having a hard time" She continued, a lone tear fell from her eyes.
Hugging her, Reina shook her head, "Don't say that. It's not your fault. Don't worry I'll make everything better"She spoke comfortingly.
"Some day we'll be very rich and you'll live like a princess. We'll live in a big mansion with servants all around. Taking care of your every need"
Smiling, Annie spoke, "Sister, you dream a lot but I love you"
"l love you too baby".
Together they got lost in their dreams, momentarily forgetting all their worries.
In a luxurious mansion, lying in bed is a weak old man with silver hair who was hanging onto life thanks to the life support machines attached to his body.
An elegant and sophiscated old lady who seems to be in her late sixties was dressed meticulously in a luxury designer clothes, exuding nobility sat beside the old man. However she didn't have the benevolent expression old women usually wore.
"Arnold, whatever it is you're planning. I won't let you succeed. l will not allow you to bring shame to this family. Those people have no place here and they never will. I won't allow it".The old lady spoke fiercely, hitting the floor with her walking stick to show her indignation.
"Nuria. How many years has it been? After all these years, you're still very bitter about the past. Set yourself free and let it go",said the old man with labored breath.
Teary eyed but with a firm expression, she spoke through gritted teeth", Everything belong solely to my grandson. I will not allow others to have it. I'm the one you should compensate. I will not allow it. I will not".
Getting up from the bed, she walk towards the door but paused when she heard," My Zelkowicz family can't be without a heir. Bring the next heir apparent and I'll compensate you. Without it, you can't blame me for being unfair."
"I won't lose." She uttered coldly and left
