Chapter 6: Mystery?

"It's getting late, Prince Reves, Seffy and I should be leaving soon"

I said with an apologetic smile.

"Eh? But the sun isn't even setting yet. What's with the hurry, Miss Xinra?"

"Um..."

"Let her go, Reves. It's a long way from here to her house. And knowing Xinra, she'd probably be walking to save money"

Seffy answered for me with an annoying chuckle at the end.

"Ah, I see... Then the next time I throw a party, would you like to attend, Miss Xinra?"

"Hey! Invite me too!"

He looked disappointed for a second but quickly masked it with an adorable smile.

"Of course, I'd be happy to attend, Prince Reves"

"Pass me an invitation too, Reves!"

"D-Do you really have to go so early, Miss Xinra? Perhaps, you could stay here for the night?"

He hung his head and pouted before shifting his eyes upward, towards me.

"Hey, hey... That's a dangerous request there, Reves..."

"I'm sorry, Prince Reves but I can't possibly stay"

As I stood up and was about to leave before Prince Reves manages to dissuade me, a knock was heard from the door.

"Prince Reves, a letter has arrived for Miss Altinae"

The butler from before announced from the other side of the door.

For me?

"Come in. Give the letter to Miss Xinra, please"

Prince Reves said.

The butler handed me the letter and as I looked at its sender, my eyes widened.

"Huh...?"

That's odd. Why would they send a letter..? Did something happen?

"Xin? What's wrong? You're spacing out"

Seffy's voice snapped me out of my trance.

"Miss Xinra?"

Both Seffy and the Prince, even the butler, was looking at me a bit worriedly.

"Is it personal? Would you rather not talk about it?"

Seffy seemed concerned for some reason.

Though, I feel nothing particularly strange.

That's what I thought until I felt a single teardrop running down my face. Seffy must've noticed my eyes tearing up...

Quickly wiping my eyes with the sleeves of my uniform, I reply.

"I'm fine, Seffy. It's just been so long since I received a letter from this person"

"Who is it from, Miss Xinra?"

Prince Reves asked with curiosity. Likely not wanting to invade my privacy though, he chose not to peek over my shoulder.

Giggling, "It's from—"

I went home soon after the whole letter thing. Though, Prince Reves asked Seffy to stay for a few more minutes.

Quickly walking towards my house though, I saw some children playing together. A soft smile makes its way to my face as I stop and watch them for a bit.

"They look like they're having so much fun, no?"

I suddenly heard a voice behind me, making me jump in surprise.

"Ah, I didn't mean to scare you. Are you alright?"

I turned to see a girl that seemed to be around my age talking to me. She had short brown hair and was quiet beautiful.

Not wanting to be rude, I quickly answered her.

"Don't worry, I'm fine. I was on my way home and decided to watch for a bit"

"I see. It's dangerous walking alone at night, you probably wouldn't want to be caught in the dark. If you'd lik—"

"Big sis, you're finally here!"

"We've been waiting for you!"

"Come play with us!"

The children suddenly turned their attention to the girl beside me and invited her to play with them.

"Aha... well, looks like I'll have to leave you here. Goodbye, stranger"

Sha said with a small wave towards me.

I waved back with a small smile on my face as I watch her happily playing with the children. She seems very kind.

{At another place}

"What was that back there, Ezhufie?"

A young man with an innocent-looking face is now glaring at the woman sitting across from him.

"What do you mean, Reves? I don't quite understand"

The woman calmly sips her tea as the Prince continues to grow impatient with her evading his questions.

"The letter! There's definitely something off about it! About Miss Xinra! Why didn't you tell me anything about this?!"

The Prince slams his hands against the table, making the the table and the butler behind him shake. The woman, however, remains unfazed.

"Like I said before, Reves. I don't know everything. And Xin is my friend, there's no way I'll divulge something as personal as her past. Especially since it's painful for her. Plus, I don't think there's anything useful there, either. A horde of monsters. Just the odds stacked against her"

"Hahh... It was definitely suspicious that uncle let a student like her attend this academy but if it was just out of pity then..... John, please escort Ezhufie out. And tell the maids to clean this up"

"Yes, Milord"

It seems the Prince had given up on the subject, placing it in the back of his mind until he spots a hole he can look into.

"Tch stupid blondie"

As I was being lead out of Reves' place, my mind can't help wandering back to that letter. There was no information about that letter nor the sender of it in-game. In fact, not once did that person even show up, they weren't in the profiles for the game characters either.

For a game that would even give a farmer a whole backstory and lore just because he gave the heroine some apples, you would think Xin, the closest person to the heroine in-game, would have some more details in her backstory. But it was all 'horde of monsters attacked her home, everyone died, got enrolled by chance'. It didn't list the cause of the attack, the reason for enrollment, nor what happened to her village after the attack.

If you really think about it. Xin is just clouded in mystery, isn't she?
