Chapter 24: Accidentally Taking a ----

Eventually, Mors got there. It wasn't exactly hard to find, with it spewing smoke everywhere. But the thing that was the hardest to find was the entrance to the place.

After searching for what seemed like forever at a blank brick wall, Mors was lucky enough to find the brinks magically opening up as someone left.

Apparently, that was the entrance to the large building, or that was what Mors was thinking. But while in shock at the magical door, Mors noticed something concerning that pulled him back.

The wall was closing.

So going into a full sprint, Mors dashed towards the opening. Off to the side, some people gave him a weird look, but he ignored it since he didn't want to waste time.

Thankfully, he reached the entrance before it closed and narrowly entered the building. What greeted him, you might ask?

But of course, tons of dense smoke, hot air, and loud clanging noises. It felt like an oven inside the building as loud clanging rang out.

Covering his ears, Mors quickly looked for the stairs. Sadly for him, the stairs seemed to not exist as far as he could see in the dense smoke.

Afraid that he entered the wrong building, Mors quickly searched for someone to help him with directions.

So looking around, Mors just saw flames in the distance, and with a closer look, furnaces held those flames.

Finding the sources of all the heat in the building, Mors decided to travel over there. Someone had to be watching the furnaces, and that person could help out Mors.

Going through the clouds of smoke, Mors reached a furnace, only to find it empty. Seeing no one, Mors looked around the furnace.

Finding an assortment of things made Mors think that it was a workstation, as all there was an assortment of small tools, with two tables and neatly stacked piles of metal blocks.

He started to look over the stuff on the table as he became curious and found a drawing.

It looked something like the circle that dried him at Alice's house, except there were problems with it. Small and large mistakes even. Sometimes like a missing line or an extra symbol. Even a section was missing.

Worried for someone else who might try and make the wrong circle, Mors quickly picked up a pen he found around and edited the page.

It wasn't much, but he felt if someone messed up the circle, something bad might happen.

Taking a few minutes to check the circle in his mind, editing the page, and breathing in some of the smoke, he finally finished the edits.

It was then out of the fog, Mors saw someone coming. They were larger than a regular person, and Mors couldn't make out the details of the person.

But they were definitely coming.

Worried the person might get mad seeing Mors messing with the drawing, Mors quickly flipped over the paper and backed away from the station.

As the person came closer, Mors realized that the person was blackened by smoke and holding a bunch of papers. They looked similar to the person he wanted to talk to, but he wasn't the same.

He quietly came up, put the paper Mors messed with onto the file, and said, "you're free to rest upstairs; just go straight behind me until you reach the stairs," before walking away.

Puzzled, Mors thought the person would be mad, or at least ask where Mors came from. But no, he just pointed him towards the stairs and left.

Considering his luck helping him, Mors traveled towards the stairs, and quickly up them. Immediately he knocked on the first door on the left and waited.

The air was cleaner up here, and Mors could see a lot more. He could also hear better since the clanging was seemingly contained downstairs.

Looking closer at the door, he found a button with a sign that says, "Click to alert inside person... if there is no response, wait in the waiting area."

Seeing that, Mors felt relieved as he sighed and clicked it.

After a few minutes of nothing, Mors eventually heard a voice behind him saying, "What are you waiting for, old man? Go to the resting area."

This time, when Mors looked toward the voice, he found it to be an average-sized person with goggles on his head.

"Ok," replied Mors, as he might as well wait in there for the person inside to finish. Even though he didn't know where the resting area was.

As if reading his mind, the guy said, "In case you have forgotten, follow me."

Then the duo traveled down the hallway. They both stayed silent as they passed door after door. The silence was almost deafening at this point.

Eventually, the goggles guy stopped by a door, and the two entered.

With the door open, Mors found the room packed with people. Some were crying, some seemed to be praying, and a minority seemed to have confident smiles on their faces.

Confused by how many emotional people there were in here, Mors asked, "is there an event going on right now?"

"Of course, it's an entrance test for enchanters. Now sit and wait for someone to come to get you." Said goggles dude, before leaving Mors.

It was then that the strange set of events that recently happened made sense.

Mors had accidentally taken the entrance test for enchanters.

'Oh no,' only came to mind.

Fear popped into his head, as he didn't mean to take the exam, and he guessed there was paperwork that he needed to do first to pass.

But also, a sense of excitement came to his mind. He had accidentally taken an exam for enchanters. He didn't even think he could enter an enchanter's room, much less take an exam.

Even if he didn't do good, which he expected since he didn't hear the instructions, and his memory of the dry circle thing was fuzzy. But at least if he got the chance, try.

Sitting down again, Mors realized that he would have to waste time again. He wanted to at least see the result he had, so he once again called out to the ghosts.

He was starting to get lonely at this point without the ghosts. Even though their time together was short, it felt like he had made some friends again.

With his heart hurting in loneliness, he couldn't feel or hear any response from them. He was deadly worried for them now…

Maybe the crystal forced them to move on, or maybe it just trapped them deep into his body. He could only speculate as hints of doom gloomed over his mind.

Calling out for minutes, someone eventually touched his shoulder. Looking up, Mors found a blue-eyed giant with a black coat looking at him.

The man was silent, as if waiting for a response, maybe he missed his question, so he asked, "what did you say? I was in my own world."

"Oh, well, I'll say it again then, follow me… we need to talk," replied the blue-eyed giant.

"Ok?" Mors responded with a bit of despair. Guessing he did horribly or failed badly. He already expected that he would fail, but how badly did he have to fail to have to talk in private.

He decided to follow along quietly, as he didn't want to cause any more problems.

Walking back along the hallway, Mors decided he might as well tell the truth. He had just stumbled in trying to find someone, and this could help him out.

He had only slightly forgotten about the fact he needed to talk to the grey-eyed giant dude. The accidental test made him curious, and that door didn't open when he knocked.

Walking down the smooth stone floor, Mors heard the blue-eyed dude start talking, "So it seems you entered into the test accidentally…."

With shock, Mors asked, "how did you know?"

The man stopped for a moment, before starting to shake. Mors thought the giant might be mad at him as he stepped back.

But after a few silent steps, Mors heard booming laughter shake the halls. The man replied, "I didn't take you to a table, and I never told you the rules."

It made since Mors felt. The examiner would probably notice someone new. Maybe even his paper was different enough to bring further suspicion on Mors.

Finally, when they almost reached the stairs, Mors and the blue-eyed giant entered on the left. Basically, opposite the door, Mors wanted to enter.

Entering the room, Mors found it pretty empty, like extremely empty, not considering the desk and two chairs. It almost felt like an interrogation room he had heard about.

Becoming nervous, the giant guy didn't help as he said in a monotone, "Don't worry, nothing bad is going on. Sit."

Taking a deep breath, Mors tried his best to calm down. Maybe the dude was telling the truth, but to be sure, Mors looked at the metallic chair for any clues.

And thankfully, he could spy a thinly scratched circle. Guessing that was a hidden enchantment, Mors politely declined as he stood behind the chair.

Maybe it wasn't something bad, but he didn't want to take his chances.

The giant dude looking at Mors refusing to sit just shrugged as he said, "lock."

From the walls, red ink spewed out of invisible scratches. Quickly hundreds of symbols appeared, scattering into multiple circles that filled the walls and floor.
