Chapter 9: Learning alone
Zane stepped back when the beast swung the sword again, the weapon almost touched the tip of his nose, but that didn't make him even blink.
"This thing's endurance is higher than that of the skeleton wizards… I guess it is because the others were completely focused on attacking with magic…" Zane thought.
Zane waited again for the skeleton to swing down its sword and then swing to the side of its shield. The monster was a bit more troublesome, but not that much troublesome. After reading the line of attack perfectly, Zane stabbed the core and killed the creature. This time, he got eight energy points from the sphere.
"It will keep increasing alongside the difficulty level of the battles…" Zane thought while clenching his fists. "Gaus said that the prediction is that people will face three more levels of skeletons, but the survivability should increase since we learn new techniques on the resting point. From ten to one, from ten to five…"
Zane kept moving, and after a while, he couldn't help but frown since he didn't find any signs of bifurcations. It was useful that the path wasn't splitting, but that was still weird…
The next skeleton showed up, and it was another using a shield and sword. However, the next one wasn't as violent as the previous… it slowly approached with the shield protecting its core. Zane could almost feel the fear of the creature… Thanks to that, he wondered… if those things were the spirits of the dead…
As if the creature had noticed what Zane thought, it suddenly charged and swung down the sword. Zane dodged to the side and saw that the creature's shield still was protecting the core.
Zane kicked the legs of the monster, and it fell. When Zane tried to kick the shield as well, the beast swung its sword and almost cut his leg. Zane took a step backward and then another forward to step on the arm that was holding the sword before attacking the head again and again.
"If you are someone who was once cursed, then I cannot do anything aside from taking you down," Zane said.
The creature endured six hits before it stopped moving. Still, since it didn't disappear, Zane knew that it was trying to surprise him… he attacked the head until the monster dissipated.
"It almost looks like they are getting smarter as well…" Zane said while he cleaned his clothes from the sand of the ground.
While Zane walked, he wondered if he was going to see some sort of evolution on the skeletons archers, and mages… they were already troublesome as they were, after all. It was probably for that reason that Gaus told him to stay until he learned Mana Bolt.
Once again, Zane didn't find the path splitting, and then he found the next target. His mana had been recovered during that time, so he decided to do what Gaus told him: be creative.
When the skeleton began to move toward him, Zane emitted his mana from his right arm to his sword. He was slow and barely covered the whole blade in a thin layer of mana before the monster attacked him. Still, Zane blocked the sword strike, and his weapon didn't even flinch…
"It isn't a technique yet, but it is working…" Zane thought.
The skeleton swung its sword down again and again, but Zane easily repelled the strikes before he went to the offensive. With quick stabs, he tried to hit the core of the monster, but the shield got in the way… that being said, the monster was forced to take several steps backward every time it was hit, and it didn't take long for the wooden shield to crack.
Once that happened, two thrusts had been enough to crack the creature's core. While he was getting the sphere, Zane was certain that he wasn't the first to think of doing that, but it was a useful technique anyway. Still incomplete, but it was only a matter of time before it became able to crush skeletons left and right.

"It consumed a lot of mana with each hit… the layer of energy needs to be stronger in order to bring down the enemy faster," Zane thought.
Zane probably won't be able to recover all his mana before a few battles, so that he can't practice anymore. Unless he takes a break and uses Meditation. He also could use his status points to increase his recovery… that was probably the best option that he had.
In the end, Zane did that… improved his recovery, and then moved. When the next enemy showed up, almost all of his mana was full, but he still took his time to kill it. It was better to try to perfect the technique while he wasn't fighting… it would be annoying if he failed, and that cost his weapon or something.
Still, after some tests, he didn't make much progress… his talent for magic really sucked, or he needed to improve his Mana Manipulation or increase his intelligence.
"I learned Battle Aura, so I don't think that I am that bad, so…" Zane rubbed his chin thoughtfully, and then he had an idea when he found the entrance to the next floor.
Before a monster could show up, Zane emitted his mana to the entire weapon. Instead of just covering the blade, he covered the hilt, the handle, and the blade. It seemed a bit too simple, but it made a difference…
