Chapter 31: Alex and Yohr

Alex closed his fingers together in a tight grip. His eyes watching the holographic screen that shimmered in the dim office. A world of death. A god of the dead. Auclair's trial was an interesting one.

Coupled with his position as the god of the dead, one might think that this trial would be the best fit for him. So far, Alex was thinking the same thing. It was unfortunate, but he wasn't sure if Erus was meddling with the system and organizing the trials or not.

It was simply too early to come to conclusions.

The trial itself had really just begun, yet Auclair had yet to falter, and had yet to stumble. As for the business with Miss Whitewood of Internal Affairs in the Iron Syndicate- it had concluded with frightening efficiency.

The team that had gone down to the planet and simulated a rupture in space had been wholly successful and left without a trace. Yet not a moment later, Alex had received reports that Miss Whitewood and her team had arrived.

He had yet to hear back from her, but he assumed she already had all she needed to come to a conclusion.

Alex stood from his office chair and turned off the computer screen. He paced in the office, looking at nothing in particular as thoughts bounced around in his head. The office was silent save for the buzz of a single faulty light.

He had asked the building maintenance to fix it, but they couldn't. It was perfect in every way from a technical perspective. They even stripped it apart and looked at where it connected with the office too, yet not a single thing wrong could be found.

They even replaced it.

Nothing happened. The buzz rang ever on.

He was thinking about the Hex Trials as a whole, he didn't just need to watch out for Auclair. He was thinking about the board too, they'd eat him alive if the Trials weren't perfect. He also thought of Miss Whitewood.

He thought she was much like the light.

In her presence, he felt like something was wrong, yet everything in reality told him he was fine. He couldn't tell what it was. Humans often called it a gut feeling.

As an ancient, Alex didn't need to trust in gut feelings. He trusted in facts and worked patiently. Ancients prided themselves on that while humans ran ahead recklessly, trusting nothing but a foolish feeling.

But Alex's father Hero had a different opinion of the humans.

'They've evolved quicker than everyone else. They just sprouted up as one of the last races of the universe. Yet their short life spans handicapped them. So they evolved somewhat of a sixth sense. That is their gut.'

Alex wasn't a human, nor did he choose to believe in gut feelings. But on this one occasion, he found himself doing exactly that. The feeling was simply too strong and she was simply too pressuring.

Another way Alex found Miss Whitewood to be similar to the buzzing light?

He thought she was annoying.

'That's why humans are one of the strongest races in the world.' His father had added in a passing remark when they originally had the conversation.

Alex paced around his office some more before grabbing a small drink. He lowered to his waist and stared at his reflection in the shiny glass.

'She knows… but isn't saying anything. Why?' Alex pondered.

He sighed and scarfed down the drink in one go.

"What do you need me to do?" Yohr asked an old man who was looking out a dark window. In a dense sprawling city, a thick rain poured incessantly.

"The medicine? How is it?" The old man asked instead without taking his eyes off the window.

"It's not great." Yohr answered with a tinge of annoyance.

"Well, you're injuries were severe. Its not everyday you find someone crawling around with bloody tubes sticking out of their body." The old man turned towards Yohr, "Of course the medicine would be shit. It doesn't perform miracles."

Yohr scoffed a bit causing the other men in the room to glare at him behind their heavily tinted sunglasses. The old man waved at them to get rid of their expressions.

"You didn't answer my question."

"That's true. It's because I know you won't like my answer." The old man looked into Yohr's eyes.

Yohr rolled his eyes and said, "And yet, I still asked it."

"There's a woman atop one of these skyscrapers. She's surrounded by an army, no way in, no way out. I want you to kidnap her with that special ability of yours."

"The only reason I'm still stuck here in this pathetic place is because of that very same ability of mine." Yohr said in passing.

"So is that a yes or a no?" The old man asked with a friendly face.

"…" Yohr wrapped his arms together and thought about it for a moment, "Fine."

"Great. So that ability, what's the range on it now after you've rested?" The old man asked.

"Depends on how much rest I have and how much I've recently used it. It also depends on the things in my way. I can't side-tear in this state, so if something is encased it'll be harder to." Yohr explained quickly.

He was the god of space, he could get anywhere normally. But in the state his body was in, he could barely move from city block to city block. He couldn't even summon his Ego as that too had been injured.

"Side-tear?" The old man asked.

Yohr sighed and scratched the back of his head.

"Alright." He raised his hands to explain. "Draw a stick figure, then draw a box around them. They're trapped in a two dimensional plane. As far as they're aware, there is no way in, and no way out. Correct?"

"…"

"But since we're in the third dimension, I can just pop right in if I felt like it. The stick figure would have no idea how I did it, because they can't see what we see. It's literally impossible for them to perceive it. The same goes for us though. We're in the third dimension, but what would happen if something from the fourth dimension just hit us right on the nose?"

The old man's eyes widened.

"That's side-tearing. If something is encased, I just go around it. I can't do it anymore, not until I'm healed all the way."

"T-that's a remarkable gift you have!" The old man exclaimed.

"I suppose." Yohr shifted his body in the worn down jacket he had on. He had taken it from someone as he was leaving the hospital.

'How the mighty have fallen.'

Yohr rubbed his tired eyes as he was given the address of the man he was supposed to kill.

The old human who was just often called, 'the Boss,' was entrenched in a multi-generational war with a single ancient. The old human was currently winning but could feel himself slipping into death. He didn't have an heir and he didn't pick one.

He wanted to kill the ancient and take her down with him.

Yohr however, didn't care, 'I just need my medicine to leave this shit hole of a planet and find Auclair.'

"You got all of that?" One of the many men in sharp black suits asked Yohr after they were done explaining to him what to do.

"Yeah, go there and kill her."

"No. Go there and kidnap her. The Boss wants to kill him." The man frowned.

"Well, its a shame that without any insurance, I'm not going to do that. I want collateral so I know that if I do this, I'll get my medicine." Yohr said with a clear lack of sleep draining his voice.

"Just. Do. It." The man said angrily as the others started to get riled up.

"Go get a fucking contract or something." The old man snapped towards his guards. "Last time I remember, I was the boss- or did something change?"

"And you! If you can't get her back here, just kill her. I'm not a picky man." The old man said to Yohr.

The men settled down and soon Yohr had it written that he'd get his medicine. They both signed the paper and Yohr teleported out of the building.

CREATORS' THOUGHTS
WheresMahPie WheresMahPie

I’ve been working on two other projects for a bit. One is very complicated and time consuming, the other is incredibly depressing. The latter was from an idea I had a long time ago that I had fleshed out. After going back over my notes about it, I can’t help but get beaten down.

Its hard to put into words, but it’s a truly awful thing I’ve created. I just get sadder every time I add on to it. That’s not me tooting my own horn, it just genuinely makes me sad.

Also, I think I’m going to make the chapters shorter, I dunno yet.
