Chapter 4: First Fight And Using Magic

Hmm, the more and more I look at my status, the more I get curious.

With [Zerris's Blessing], I can level up far quicker than a regular person, and I can earn Skills by performing a single action on it. I didn't know how this was supposed to work, so I decided to test it out.

And that requires me to fight something. I was thinking of fighting Amy, but comparing her stats with mine, I don't stand a chance.

Luckily, on our way to the village, we ran into an enemy.

It was a goblin. It had the body of a child with pale green skin and pointy ears.

It didn't have any clothes besides the dirty brown cloth that covered its lower area. It also had a rusty dagger pointed at us.

The goblin spoke in an unfamiliar language. I didn't know what it just said, so I'm going to ignore it.

"Master, the insect wants to fight us." Amy interpreted.

"Wait, you can understand it?" I asked.

"I am fluent in all languages, including ancient ones like Apesh."

I don't know what that means, but I get the point.

So, this thing wants to attack us, huh? I guess I can enlighten it.

But first, I should know how strong it is.

"[Appraisal]" I chanted.

Name: None

Race: Goblin

Age: 5

Class: Soldier

Level: 3

Rank: F

STR: 300

DEF: 200

AGI: 420

MRES: 100

Skills: [Dagger Arts: Beginners]

Special Skills: None

Titles: [Derk's Soldier]

This thing doesn't even seem that dangerous compared to me. It may be two levels above me, but its stats were basically trash.

What's up with that? This must be Zerris's blessing again.

Also, what's with the Rank thing? Does that tell me how dangerous it is?

Rank: Displays the level of difficulty the monster is. Rank F being the weakest to Rank SSS being the most dangerous.

Well, that explains that. It seems that it only applies to monsters though since neither Amy or I have it.

I wonder what the Shadow Wolf's rank is. Actually, I'll worry about that later.

Right now, I should focus on the goblin.

After verifying the goblin's abilities, I approached it. The little green monster gave me a wicked smile and made a fighting stance.

I did the same as well. The goblin then charged at me.

It was pretty slow, so I didn't really react much. The green monster then tried to thrust its dagger in my stomach.

Thanks to my Agility Stat being higher, I dodge the goblins attack with ease. I then grabbed its arms and tossed it aside.

The goblin dropped its dagger as it crashed into the ground. I didn't waste any time and rushed at it.

After I grabbed its weapon, I then pierced the goblins chest before it could get back up. The little green freak spazzed out a little and then stopped moving.

It was now dead. After confirming its death, I pulled out the dagger and threw it away.

That wasn't so bad.

I was a little tired from the fight, so I sat down to take a breather. Let's see what my status is now.

Name: Damien Crow

Race: Human(?)

Age: 14

Class: None

Level: 2

STR: 2,200

DEF: 1,900

AGI: 3,000

MRES: 1,300

Skills: [Appraisal], [False Status], [Detection], [Hide Presence], [Hand-to-Hand Combat], [Dagger Arts: Beginners]

Special Skills: [Zerris's Blessing]

Titles: [Child of Zerris], [The Dark Champion], [Other-Worlder]

Not bad. At least I know how this blessing works now.

Despite not doing much in that fight, my stats increased a lot more than I expected. That goblin may have been weak, but it sure helped me out.

While looking at my status, I noticed that I learned two new skills. [Hand-To-Hand Combat] and [Dagger Arts].

I didn't really do much to earn these skills, but it seems that doesn't matter. This blessing sure is convenient.

Something was off though. Despite having my stats increased, I still didn't feel any different than usual.

I mean, I feel stronger, but barely. I'll have to look into that later.

"Nicely done, master." Amy complimented me.

"Thanks," I told her.

After resting a bit, I got up and walked away from the dead goblin corpse.

"Let's keep moving," I told them.

"As you wish, master."

. . .

After walking for a while, we decided to stop for a few minutes. I was curious about a few things, so I asked Amy about them.

"How can you use magic in this world?" I asked.

"Well, to learn magic, you need to understand how it works. To do that, you need to know what makes it up."

"In English, please."

Amy sighed but kept talking.

"Since the origin of this world, magic has been the foundation of what makes it up. Not everyone can use magic, but those who can are capable of many things."

"Please get to the point."

Amy got a little irritated but skipped to the part I wanted to here.

Basically, if I wanted to learn how to use magic, I needed to understand the structure of what makes it up. It's kind of like a complicated formula that I have to thoroughly examine to know every single part.

This was going to be difficult, since I wasn't good at math, to begin with. If learning magic was similar to math class, then I was in for the long run.

However, it turns out that I didn't need to do all that. I found out that all I needed to do was imagine the spell as clearly as possible and did my chant.

I learned this by using a Fire Magic Spell called [Fireball]. From Amy's explanation, the traditional way to learn this spell was to build up a formula that makes up the fireball.

But, for some reason, all I needed to do was imagine a fireball while pouring some of my magic into it. I actually almost made the fireball instantly.

Was this the work of Zerris's Blessing? There's no other explanation for this, so I'll stick with it.

Anyway, after learning how to use magic, I started to work on a few magic spells to use while we kept walking to the village.

On our way there, we ran into some more goblins. This time, there were about half a dozen of them this time.

Not only that, but they had better equipment than the last one. Unlike the previous goblin, these green freaks had leather armor, and their weapons were a little better.

They all stared at us with murderous intent, readying their weapons.

What perfect timing! I've been meaning to test out my magic, so these goblins arrived just in time.

One of the goblins shouted, and that's when the others then charged at us.

"[Fireball]" I wasted no time and chanted.

Soon after, a fireball appeared before us and was launched at the goblins. Once the ball of flame hit it targets, the goblins screamed in pain and agony as they burned alive.

I was a little concerned about burning a couple of trees, so I decided to put out the flame.

"[Water Blast]" I chanted, and water began to pour out of my hand like a hose at the fire.

Once the fire was out, all that was left was six burnt corpses. The smell of burnt flesh was pretty bad, so we decided to leave soon after.

Let's check out my status now.

Name: Damien Crow

Race: Human(?)

Age: 14

Class: None

Level: 8

STR: 5,300

DEF: 5,350

AGI: 6,220

MRES: 6,500

Skills: [Appraisal], [False Status], [Detection], [Hide Presence], [Hand-to-Hand Combat], [Dagger Arts], [Fire Magic], [Water Magic]

Special Skills: [Zerris's Blessing]

Titles: [Child of Zerris], [The Dark Champion], [Other-Worlder]

Wow, that's pretty impressive. My stats are growing more and more by the second.

I wonder what the goblins level were. I took a look with [Appraisal] to see what I was up against.

Hmm? It seems that I can't see their stats when they're dead.

All that showed on their status was [Deceased].

Well, whatever, they helped me level up, so I guess it's fine.

I did notice something about these goblins before they died. I took a little peek at one of their statuses before and noticed that their title said [Derk's Soldier]

Was this Derk guy their leader? If he's their leader, then he has to be strong, right?

I bet if I kill him, then I'll be far stronger. He'll likely raise my stats up a lot than these pathetic goblins can.

. . . Did I really just say that? What's gotten into me?

Actually, never mind that. I'm getting off track right now.

First, I need to go to the village. After that, I'll worry about other things later.

Alright, let's keep moving.
