Chapter 107: Vorlaufer

Kita had seen the cube that the guy was holding. This was the same cube as the core of the Trees found on B1. Although the coloration was different. It was blue rather than the regular Orange hue that Kita was familiar with.

But the shape and the features of the cuboid was exactly the same as the cores of trees!

"That can't be a coincidence! These things have to be related to something!" Kita exclaimed!

Kita quickly began to go through the rest of the logs. And began to read through everything related to that project.

He began to read everything, from where they first encountered it and what kinds of tests and experiments they run on it. He was currently sitting on a treasure trove of information related to that cube and he wasn't about to let it go.

The hours went by Kita got back into his researcher groove and kept reading through everything.

After reading all of it and going through all the video logs, Kita finally laid back on his seat a bit. He had learnt quite a bit about the research project and the cuboid in general.

It seemed that the Cube had been first found on an asteroid with weird signatures in a nameless star system. The crew of the Jeager had gone to take a look and had came back with this strange cuboid thing that was emitting all the signals.

Dr. Jutat was quite ecstatic when he finally had a decent research project to work on. But it quickly went away as he realized that the cuboid was exceedingly hard to work with.

First of all, none of the scanners could scan it as it didn't even register as an object to the scanner. Then there was the problem with the signals.

The signals it emitted were great at messing with computers and terminals in the lab. And it went through most materials and registered on all radio frequencies in a radius. Only a few things could block it. And one of them was an exotic known as Rud 3724. They had managed to contain the signals by keeping it inside a box lined with that exotic.

Rud 3724 was quite a common exotic. Why it worked while most other materials failed? They weren't sure. But it worked.

So as they were able to contain it, Dr. Jutat managed to find a way to tweak the settings of the scanner and somehow managed to get it scanned. Although the scanner couldn't figure out any of the data, Dr. Jutat had managed to find out that the cuboid wasn't made out of any known materials. Whatever it was made out of hadn't been discovered by humanity yet.

Another observation they made was that the insides of the cuboid seemed homogenous. There weren't distinct parts inside that could be taken as part of a machine. So it was also mystery as to how exactly it worked and sent a signal.

The signal itself was fairly generic. It was a string of signals that looped over every day. They couldn't make any sense of it as they lacked the experties. And Dr. Jutat also belived that it was encrypted in the first place.

To decrypt and then translate it would be an enormous effort that they didn't want to undertake.

While visiting the Lab, the captain had managed to somehow activate the cuboid somehow. one of the sides of the cube had popped up by about 1mm. there was visible gap between the body of the cuboid and the side that popped up. It hovered above the cuboid.

After trying hard, they hadn't managed to open it any further nor get any other reactions from it.

Instead, when performing one such research, the Cuboid had turned black before disintegrating completely into regular space dust.

That was the end of the cuboid.

Although there weren't any specific noteworthy properties about it, but it was still an interesting event for everyone aboard the Jeager.

There were records of the signals it transmitted with the files. Kita had checked them out.

It didn't make any sense to him either.

Although the Cuboid looked similar to the ones found on B1. But the cuboids on B1 didn't act like it. And also could be scanned easily. Although they couldn't figure out the insides of it anyway. But there were quite a few deviations from the cuboid that the crew of Jeager had previously came across.

"There are so many deviations, but they looks so damn similar!" Kita thought to himself as he looked at celling while thinking about the cuboid.

Except for the color, the cuboid was exactly the same as the ones found on B1.

"Both of them may have common origin point."

Kita wasn't sure. But it may have been that the blue cuboid was created by the same alien race that was responsible for creating B1 and the other planets.

But the Blue cube wasn't found anywhere near the B1. It was found in a completely unknown star system.

As Kita thought about it a bit more, he had an inkling. Although the chances were low, there was a chance that he was right.

Kita quickly noted down the location of the star system that they blue cuboid was found in. It was going to be their first destination after they started their voyage.

If Kita was right, then there was more to discover in that star system than they thought.

Kita also had an inkling that he would get a few clues for the race responsible for the cuboids.

He knew that they were quite a powerful race and shouldn't be disturbed, but knowing about your enemy was also important.

How can you defend against your enemy if you don't know who that was?

So he wanted to gather more information about them. Whatever little it might be.

He started a new project on the main terminal. This one was gonna be for any projects to find out more information about the unknown alien race.

He named the Project, Vorlaufer.
