Chapter 85: A Dying Promise {83}

The castle burned with an intense fury, flames licking at the dark marble stones as smoke billowed into the night sky. Aether and Vasha fought their way through the chaos, tearing through the bodies of armored soldiers with a savagery born of desperation. Blood splattered across their faces, mingling with sweat as they forced their way towards their beloved Vasili.

Aether's silver hair shimmered in the firelight as he swung his sword, each strike fueled by a desperate need to find Vasili. His heart pounded in his chest, every beat echoing with fear and determination. Beside him, Vasha moved with a deadly grace, his ebony armor reflecting the flickering flames. His twin blades danced through the air, finding their mark with deadly precision. They would not be stopped, not until they found Vasili.

It felt like hours had passed as they fought their way through the labyrinthine halls of the castle. Each corner turned revealed another horde of soldiers, their swords and shields clashing against Aether and Vasha's relentless assault. They tore through the enemy line, leaving bloody carnage in their wake, all the while praying that they would reach Vasili in time.

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, they reached the top of the castle. Their bodies were battered and bruised, their armor dented and stained with blood. But they pressed onward, driven by the fear that gripped their hearts. And then they saw him.

Vasili lay pale and motionless on the cold stone floor, his once pristine white robes now stained with silver blood that oozed from his wounds. A hooded figure stood over him, its presence filling the room with a chilling aura. It looked up from beneath the hood, revealing a wicked sadistic smile that twisted its lips. Its blazing orbs held a deranged look, filled with malice and glee.

Aether and Vasha froze, their eyes locked with the figure's chilling gaze. Its slivery voice reached their ears, its tone taunting and dripping with mockery. It ridiculed them for not cherishing something as valuable as Vasili, for not paying attention to something as precious as him. The figure's voice, calm yet aggravating, pointed out that if they had loved and cared for Vasili like the rare gem he was, he would have never fallen into the arms of an enemy disguised as a friend. It thanked them for neglecting him, as it made the job of eliminating Vasili easier than expected.

Aether's heart shattered, guilt and anger consuming him in equal measure. His hands clenched into fists, his knuckles turning white as he watched the figure disappear and reappear in the dark skies. Aether's mind raced, his instincts kicking in as he teleported to Vasili's side in a desperate attempt to save him. But before he could reach him, the figure vanished once more, only to reappear behind Vasili. With a sinister cackling laughter, it plunged a black, glistening dagger into Vasili's heart, twisting it with sadistic delight.

Vasha watched in paralyzed horror, unable to move as the figure released Vasili's lifeless body and vanished into thin air. Aether, a strangled cry escaping his lips, lunged into the air, catching Vasili before he fell to the ground. Tears streamed down Aether's face as Vasili's once vibrant eyes met his, a weak smile gracing his blood-stained lips. With a strength born of love and undying gratitude, Vasili pressed a bittersweet kiss to Aether's forehead before turning to Vasha and sharing one final kiss on his lips.

"Thank you," Vasili whispered, his voice barely a whisper. "Thank you for loving me when no one else could."

And with those words, Vasili's body went limp, losing strength and his last breath leaving him. Aether's heart shattered into a million pieces, his sobs joining Vasha's as they grieved for the loss of their beloved. But in the midst of their devastation, Aether's mind spun with a desperate plan. With trembling hands, he quickly created a seal, infused with his magic, and pushed it into Vasili's bleeding heart.

The seal, though unable to stop Vasili's inevitable death, slowed it down. Aether spoke in a soothing whisper, his voice laden with regret and soul-crushing sorrow. "Wait for us, my love. When the time is right, we will come for you. Rest well and regain your strength until then."

As the once magnificent castle crumbled around them, Aether and Vasha clung to each other, their bodies trembling with grief and loss. The flames consumed everything, leaving only ashes in their wake. But the bond they shared remained unbroken, their love for Vasili a flame that could never be extinguished.

In that moment of unspeakable grief, they made a silent oath, a vow to honor Vasili's memory and ensure that their love would never be taken for granted again. Amidst the ruins of a burning castle, they found solace in each other, determined to carry on and cherish the love they had lost until the time was right to reclaim him. The fates acknowledged their oath, silently promising that their paths would cross again, and that love would prevail.

——

As we walked away from the burning castle, the weight of sorrow and regret settled upon us like a heavy fog. The once majestic black-marbled walls stood crumbling, consumed by the flames that danced hungrily among the torn limbs of fallen soldiers. We had fought mercilessly, leaving a trail of death in our wake, all in pursuit of revenge for the loss of our beloved Vasili.

Now, as I held Vasili's lifeless body in my arms returning to our Castle, our home, his once vibrant and happy spirit seemed to linger in the air, mingling with the smoke and ash. The castle, once a place of laughter and joy, now stood as a pitiful charred ruin. The maids, servants, and gardeners who had once been annoyed by Vasili's playful antics now mourned his absence, tears streaming down their faces.

The servants had prepared a room for our love's burial, adorned with golden decorations and a high pedestal upon which his body would lie. Aether, my other half, ordered everyone to leave, dismissing the mages, elves, and phantoms who had served us faithfully in battle. We needed this time alone, to grieve and honor the memory of our lost lover.

I clung tightly to Vasili's lifeless form, desperate for any sign of life. My heart shattered with each breathless moment that passed, silently begging for his heart to beat once more. But there was nothing. He was truly gone.

Unable to bear the weight of my emotions any longer, I crumbled to the ground. A guttural, blood-curdling growl erupted from deep within my chest, reverberating through the castle walls and sending a wave of fear through all who heard it. Vasili had shattered my walls and brought love to my stone heart, and now he lay motionless, stolen away by the merciless hands of fate.

Aether's gaze fell upon us, his heart breaking at the sight before him. He stepped forward, the sorrow evident in his eyes, and cradled me in his arms along with Vasili's lifeless body. We clung to each other, a tangle of grief and love, as we wept for our lost lover.

As the night wore on, our tears stained the castle's floors, unnoticed as our hair began to change color. My once dark hair transformed into pitch-black locks, with streaks of white on either side of my temples. Aether's hair, too, underwent a transformation, now pure white with streaks of black mirroring mine.

The fates themselves grieved alongside us, as if the whole earth and moon wept for the child lost to the cruelty of this world. We would forever carry his memory in our hearts, as our love for him remained eternally locked within our souls. When the time is right we will reclaim our lost love and I'll make sure he's never taken from us again.

This is a promise I seal with my life.
