Chapter 9: A new path 4
That same day, I was guided by a soldier towards the camp site.
''ATTENTION!'' he said as he walked inside a room, where a lot of other men and women were. They all got up and ran towards the ends of their beds as they raised their hands and saluted him.
''At ease'' he said as ha walked in. Should I walk after him? ''We have a newcomer today, he… is a bit younger then usual. But a soldier is a soldier!'' he said sternly.
He waved me over towards the end of the long hall filled with beds on the right and left side. I walked sheepishly towards him, while looking down. I don't like when I am with a lot of people, my heart starts to raise and my palms get sweety, sometimes my knees get weak too.
As I walked by the soldiers, I could feel all kinds of eyes on me. Some were curious, most were looking indifferently but a few looked at me with disgust. Maybe its because I'm dirty, I looked at me clothes that were covered worn down, with dried blood.
''This is your bed, and those are your clothes'' the soldier pointed towards the last bed. ''Take a shower first, before wearing your clothes'' he said without looking at me wand walked away.
As soon as he was gone, everyone turned relaxed and started talking again. No one paid attention to me anymore. I took the uniform that was on the bed and walked towards the shower that the soldier had pointed towards.
Luckily it connected to the hall, so I didn't have to go out in the cold. I walked in to se a long line of pipes with a few knobs. I took my clothes off and walked under the pipes. I turned on one of the knobs and stood under the icy cold water.
I didn't want to get in trouble for using up all the water, so I scrubbed my body clean quickly and then sat down until I was dry before putting on the uniform.
The clothes felt really good, but it felt a bit weird to... Last time I had cleaned myself was with Layla and Luka when it was raining.
I soon fell in my own thoughts again, Layla was gone, mother was gone, and I didn't know what happened to Luka. He was with Leyla, did he get taken too? Or maybe he was… no. he is probably still alive…
I walked back outside and some of the soldiers had gone to bed already.
''Age?'' I turned around and looked at someone who was a few years older than me, ''I asked how old you are'' he asked again sharply.
How old I am? I shook my head ''I don't know…''. He was bald and a bit muscular. He looked a bit like the gangster that mother used to buy azardia from… I don't like him.
'Pff' he scuffed ''Your mother never told you?'' he asked another question, and I again shook my head. 'Tsk', he clicked he tongue and turned away from me and laid back. I also got on my bed and laid down slowly.
''Don't take it to hard Ashy'' I looked towards my right, where a woman with cleanly shaved sides was sitting and reading a book. Her slicked back, brown hair was shining in the light.
Ashy? That's not my name. ''My name is Aris'' I corrected her. ''Nope, your name is Ashy now'' she said with a grin and got up.
''ATTENTION!'' she yelled a lot louder than the previous soldier, getting the attention of every single one ''this little kid is Ashy, so make sure you call him by that name from today onwards!''. And one by one, they all came up and introduced themselves.
''Yo Ashy, I'm mohawk'' said a dark-skinned man with his hair up like a roaster as he waved and smiled.
''Meat head'' said the previous bald and gangster looking man and turned around again.
''Hi Ashyy~… I'm Emma'' a woman with blonde hair waived and talked sweetly.
One by one, they all introduced themselves, and every single one had a weird name.
''That girls name is bimbo'' said the woman who gave me the name Ashy ''So don't call her Emma'' she said with a grin and pointed at her chest with her thumb, ''and I'm the head of this unit, so call me Boss''.
I looked at the woman in front of me, she was muscular and looked strong, while wearing the same uniform as us, she had a star on her chest that the rest didn't have. 'But why Ashy?' Was all I could think of.
