Chapter 75: TO LATE TO TURN BACK

[3rd person POV] [Location: Rutherford Medical Hospital] [Next day]

A dark cloud hung above him. The clouds kept forming until the skies turned dark gray. Raindrops fall hard on his head and he stood motionless for a moment as the rain falls down upon him. Then, he turns towards the hospital. The dark aura surrounding him is growing larger.

Gilbert starts walking towards the entrance of the hospital.

The rain fell hard on his head and he felt like he was standing under some waterfall. He walked through the large glass doors and the sound of the rain hitting against the glass made him relax.

But the moment he stepped foot into the hospital building, his mood darkened again. Today, he received news about his younger son, Jax's condition. Apparently, the vicious murderer and rapist the starfish killer raped him in jail before getting caught by the heroes. Jax's condition was already severe after getting beaten up by the heroes and to top that the starfish killer did a number on him.

Gilbert is now standing in front of two private rooms. One is for his eldest son, Jayden, and the other for the youngest, Jax.

Both rooms would be empty unless he needs them. As he opened the door to Jax's private room, Gilbert noticed something wrong. Jax's is not there. Gilbert glanced around the empty room. There is no sign of his son anywhere.

Gilbert rushed to Jayden's room and entered. He saw the same thing. Jayden's bed was also empty. It was empty.

The room was so quiet and lifeless. No trace of either of his sons. No blood on the carpet, and no mess on the floor. The place looks like there was no attack. He rushed outside and dashed to the security room. He pulled out the CCTVs footage, but nothing...

There was no sign of anyone entering the rooms or exiting the rooms. He dashed outside the hospital and flew in the air and stopped just before his son's room. Nothing. He searched around the vicinity like a maniac with bloodshot eyes.

The downpour is high today.

The rain poured over his bare head and the water ran through his short black hair. Gilbert flew higher in the air and looked around. The storm was intensifying. Thunder roared loudly and the lightning struck close to his house causing a strong tremor. The wind and thunder were making the ground shake. The trees swayed left and right.

Where is Jax? Where did they go? Why isn't Jax here? Where is Jayden? His condition is more critical than Jax's... Where are his sons?

His heart hammered hard against his chest. His lungs were struggling for air. His eyes were full of tears. He needed answers.

He was so worried and panicked that he didn't notice another person watching him from a safe distance with a sinister grin. His teeth were like that of sharks, sharp and pointy. But what stood out most were his overly long vampire-like fangs. His skin was covered with thick, green veins, almost giving him an ugly appearance. His eyes were like those of a predator, dark brown in color and filled with pure evil.

The vampire was staring at Gilbert with such intense hunger and anger that he didn't even bother hiding anymore. In fact, he wanted to fight. Right now, Gilbert has become the prey he's always looking for.

"Well well well..." the vampire smirked maliciously.

He slowly crept towards Gilbert. As soon as the vampire drew closer, Gilbert noticed a familiar smell in the air, which caused his nostrils to burn with rage. A bitter and foul smell lingered around the vampire. The stench was so powerful that Gilbert's eyes immediately started burning.

It's a rotting corpse!

"It's you, isn't it?" Gilbert flew toward the enemy in rage and yelled, "Where are my sons? What have you done with them?"

The vampire's face remained emotionless and he let loose a wicked laugh.

"Well well well, you must be really pissed off. That's your reaction when finding out that I've hurt your boys. I thought humans couldn't be madder than that," The vampire cackled.

Gilbert threw a punch at the vampire's face, but it turns out to be nothing more than an illusion. An ark of thunder crackled in the sky and Gilbert came to a realization. How is a vampire still alive under the sunlight?

Unless...

An awakened vampire with sunlight immunity!

It may sound like useless power to humans, but to a vampire, it's like a god's blessing. If someone like him is allowed to live and grow, the consequences will be devastating. They might make other vampires immune... The vampire smiled devilishly at the furious man, "Now, where should I start? Let's see... Bronx, 2 years ago, three children were shot dead, the case was closed without investigation, collateral damage!!! Rings a bell?" He spat.

Gilbert's mind was starting to race and sweat began to accumulate on his forehead. The rain continued to pour from the dark grey clouds above.

The vampire laughed once again.

"Oh come on! Don't tell me you forgot all that?!" The vampire grinned.

"You... You are him..." Gilbert stuttered. He knew exactly who this person before him is.

"Bingo! I am the father of those collateral damages," The vampire yelled with a sinister smile. The little humanity he had has been abandoned after the death of his children. Now all he wants is revenge against whoever harmed his son.

"... What do you want from me...?" Gilbert growled while clenching his fist tightly. He won't give in. Not to the monster.

"My revenge, of course!" The vampire laughed cruelly. Lightning flashed above their heads and thunder shook the whole world. The sun went dim for a second.

The vampire raised his hand slowly. He stretched his fingers towards Gilbert and he smirked menacingly. He could feel that his time is running out fast...

A bolt of lightning strikes between them and Gilbert's eyes went wide open. Blood trickles down from his nose and drops on the ground. Gilbert feels dizzy. Everything around him turns black. All he can hear is loud bangs on the roof and a series of cracking sounds. He opens his eyes slowly. The rain stops.

His vision is blurry, and his ears ringing.

He can't focus on anything properly. He hears footsteps approach him quickly and someone grabs his arm. A sudden jolt of pain shocks him awake as everything comes back to him.

The figure next to him lets go of his arms. It took Gilbert a few seconds to realize that it was the hero in charge of the hospital's security.

"Live in fear, Mr. Gilbert Wilson. For I will take everything away from you, slowly... painfully..." The vampire's voice echoed in his head.

"I'm sorry, I had to make sure you are okay..." the hero said apologetically.

"Thanks," Gilbert nodded weakly. He rubbed his throbbing forehead trying to ease the headache that is brewing inside his skull.

"You have got quite the collection of injuries you have acquired," the hero observed.

"That is nothing," Gilbert grumbled.

"I apologize for not sensing the threat earlier. But I have some good news for you, sir," the hero replied, his bright blue eyes glowing slightly.

"What is it?"

"We found your sons. It seems the doctors transferred them to the villa on your wife's recommendations, and the security cameras were under maintenance at that time so it didn't record that incident," The hero responded.

"Thank you, young man. I will remember your kindness," Gilbert flew toward his villa.

A thought was looming in his mind.

Why did that vampire lie?

"Fuck! Looks like my karma is catching up to me," Gilbert mumbled to himself as flashes of all the corrupt things he has done in his life appeared before his eyes, especially the face of his dead younger brother and his family whom he has abandoned after stealing all their wealth.

No one knows better than him how horrible human greed and lust are. Human beings need only look into the future to know how miserable they'll end up being. Humans are born greedy. They're created selfishly to survive. Their minds aren't capable of thinking rationally. They only think of what they can acquire in exchange for living peacefully.

Gilbert flew down near the villa's entrance.

"I am sorry, brother, but it's too late for me to turn back," Gilbert muttered to himself, walking along the sidewalk, his head hung low and his shoulders slumped, leaving a trail of black, dirty footprints behind him.

He finally arrived home. It wasn't a pleasant sight. Everything seemed to be messed up. Broken windows everywhere, furniture damaged, doors broken and security bots destroyed. His family's house is trashed and ruined. The front yard looks completely destroyed. There was glass scattered everywhere. The lawn was a complete mess as if something hit it. The flower beds were overturned and crushed.

"Honey," Anna, Gilbert's wife, came running saw her husband, and hugged him.

"What happened here? Are Jayden and Jax alright?" Gilbert asked frantically and rushed upstairs into his bedroom. There, he saw his beloved sons sleeping soundly on the bed. The doctors were sitting beside them and his personal team was standing on guard.

"Sir!" Hendricks, the vice-captain of his team walked to him.

"Who did this?" Gilbert asked.

"Don't know. It's hard to explain... Thousands of red energy strings destroyed the gates and furniture but didn't hurt anyone. Then I saw a shadow leaving through the front gate. It's a human-shaped shadow, dark as night," Hendricks answered.

Gilbert felt his blood boil.

"Is there any clue of where the intruder is heading?" Gilbert asked.

"Not yet, but we'll find him, sir. After all, Karina is chasing that freak..." Hendricks replied confidently.

Karina, is the strongest member of Gilbert's team. Her awakened power is super strength and super agility, just like Gilbert's. It's believed that she has far surpassed Gilbert's strength.
