Chapter 2: Chapter 2 - Blood and Shadow [2/5]

In front of the doors of the institution, Arken encountered glistening sunlight. Like a thousand needles, it stuck into its pale skin. Even after nearly four hundred years of his undead existence, he had not yet become accustomed to it. But at least she didn't burn him like the lower vampires. After a moment the feeling subsided, became duller and his eyes also got used to the brightness.

Arken shook and followed the path to Shilandra, the village to which the madhouse belonged. Several fields lay between the actual settlement and the house where the madmen were locked away. You couldn't even see it from Shilandra. It was a stain that people didn't want to see all the time.

Arken reached the village and headed purposefully toward the largest building in the center, ignoring the people who were looking at him suspiciously. It was a beautiful semi-detached house with a large balcony. A fenced flower garden was around the outside. Arken stepped over the paved path to the front door and tore it open.

A woman who was watering the plants in the reception hall was driving around. The watering can slipped away from her and distributed its contents raspingly on the ground. The woman smelled fresh, young, with an aroma of fear that Arken particularly liked.

"Sir?" she asked, after she had recovered from the greatest horror. »Can I help you?"

I'm helping myself. Arken made his way to the staircase across the door. The pungent stench of roast fat that swept through the house betrayed Arken enough.

"The mayor is busy. The woman hurried after him and stood in his way. "Please come back later."

Arken grabbed the woman and put her aside. She let out a surprised scream and backed away from him. There was only one thing the mayor of Shilandra could be busy with. With lips pressed together, Arken stomped up the stairs and turned to the right. There was the dining room, as he knew from his numerous visits. The likelihood that the fat sack was in it was high. In the dining room or in his bed. Arken pushed the hinged door open so swiftly that it crashed against the wall. The smell was strongest here. Disgusted, he rumbled his nose. As expected, the mayor sat in his most magnificent, already fat-smeared suit at a richly laid table and stared at him with full cheeks.

"Who allowed you to enter?" he sniffed at Arken and swallowed the bite he was chewing on. Fat dripped from his sausage fingers studded with jewel rings.

"I," replied Arken coldly, building up in front of the table. The stench of roasted, dead animals penetrated his nose so penetratingly that it didn't help him not to breathe. People didn't know what was good. They were full of the only tasty thing this world had to offer. At the idea of the sweet red juice of life, Arken licked his lips eagerly. He saw the blood pulsing on the fat man's carotid artery and struggled to control the impulse to rush right at him.

The mayor gave him an indignant look. "This is not the food for the poor! Get yourself something to eat!"

I'll get there soon enough, don't worry," Arken growled, regretfully tearing his gaze away from the pulsating vein.

"Why am I here… Have you made the decision to release Maya from the madhouse?"

The mayor snorted. "There is nothing to decide! This witch is just as crazy as everyone else! With her strange illness, she would infect us all and make us lose our minds as well! I will never let her put a foot out of the madhouse!« Arken's eye shrugged. Wrong answer. Stay calm. Think of the horrors of the crusade. Don't fall on him. Obese people didn't taste so good anyway.

"You said next time …"

"There is no next time! Get out of here, or I'll get the idea that you could go to your red-haired bitch's house right away!"

Arken stared at him. So there he was. The point where he would give up his cover for the first time. The realization felt good, made him feel strangely calm.

"Is this your last word?" He was too good-natured. He should have killed this pack weeks ago for what they did to Maya. And yet he gave man the very last chance to save himself.

"Yes, now get out of here and let me go about my duties as mayor."

Arken smiled and turned around. The mayor had just signed Shilandra's death sentence. With quick steps he left the estate and Shilandra. When he had moved far enough away from the village, he again made the contours of his body disappear. But instead of becoming a formless fog, its shape shrank, forming small leather wings. After his death, every vampire learned to walk like a human child: falling down a few times, learning once and never forgetting.

The rest of the day he would recover in his castle and return to Shilandra at nightfall. This cursed village would pay for what it had done to him and his loved ones. He wouldn't leave any witnesses behind. A few days later, all the surrounding villages would believe that Shilandra had fallen victim to a hungry pack of wolves.

The time of vengeance had finally come. Arken opened his eyes. There was so much darkness around him that even he couldn't see anything. Carefully he opened the lid of his coffin and stretched himself. The few hours of sleep had done him good. Now it was time for some movement.

He climbed out of his coffin, whereupon the torches on the walls of his tomb were lit as if by ghosts. He didn't need to change, why? Since his dead organism did not emit sweat, he did not start to stink like the dirty human rats. He only strapped his sword, even though he doubted that he would need it. There were other ways to kill people. Better ways and means.
