Chapter 2: CHAPTER-II

The train stopped at the London station, we got off with our luggage. It was noon. "Glen, Constable Rose will be coming to pick us up. Ah- there he is!", he pointed towards a man dressed in police uniform, with a thick wooden stick in his left hand, standing at a tea stall.

We both picked our luggage up and went to him. "Good day Constable Rose.", said Shawn. The man turned back. White mustache, deep eyebrows, a healthy person, chubby face with wrinkles on it; his cheeks were red and his eyes were blue. Smiling broad at Shawn he said, "Good day! Good day! Mr. Shawn. I have been waiting for you. Hope the journey was smooth." "Certainly, I slept the most of it though. This is Mr. Glen Sanders, a very close friend of mine I told you about." "Yes, yes! I have heard about you Mr. Sanders. I read your book, 'The Two Deadly Sorrows'." Some hell of a book it was, I loved it. Nice to meet you.". We both shook hands, "Nice to meet you too sir. I'm glad you know me and liked my book sir." "I have arranged a hackney, this way sir." he said.

We walked behind the man out of the railway station. And what a surprise! There really was a hackney waiting at the exit gate. I have heard about this man from Shawn, William Rose, as Shawn described, was privileged enough to get assigned as a constable despite the fact that he was and is obese, obese enough to be called round by some people. But the most amusing thing about this man was that he loved to joke even in during a perfectly normal word, and he did it very often, so often that even a perfectly typical phrase by him should be double checked before it is believed.

The driver got our luggage settled and we got in and left the railway station. Constable Rose was sitting before us. "So, tell me about the case Mr. Rose.", Shawn said leaning forward with his elbows resting on his thighs. "I received a call from Mr. Bruce Perry on the Sunday morning at around 5:00 am. I come to the police station early so I received the call myself. He said, "The butler! The butler! Mr. Freddie killed… the whole Philips family in the night! I have proof. Please help me!" Mr. Rose said in a dramatic way, he continued, "I got the address of the house Philips from him and went there with a gypsy and four of my men. The butler was hanging from the ceiling fan in the bedroom of Mr. and Mrs. Philips." "What? Suicide?", I exclaimed. "Yes. There was also a suicide note kept on the table beside the bed. It read

"I have not done it. Why would I kill my master whom I have seen growing from a child to an adult right in front of my eyes. I don't know how this happened. I only had this family as a family to me. I have no relatives, no brothers, no sisters, no friends. This family was everything to me."

"I see.", said Shawn and sighed. I looked at Shawn and asked, "You got something?". He asked the Constable, "I would like to visit the house before evening Mr. Rose." "Sure thing sir! I will arrange a gypsy for that."

It took us twenty minutes to get to the Radisson's Hotel. "Looks like a convenient place to stay." I said, standing in front of the gate of our hotel and looking up at the building. "You won't face any problem here sir; now allow me to leave. I have to get to the place I love to work at, the police station." Mr. Rose chuckled and left.

Our room was on the second floor. We settled our things and decided to rest for a while. The room had two beds along the two opposite walls, a ceiling fan, a balcony, a window, a wooden cabinet, a dressing table, and a pair of chairs with a table. The room had an attached bathroom and a toilet.

I was sitting on a chair, Shawn laid on his bed with his left leg on top of his right knee, his both hands behind his head.

He grunted and said, "Something tickles me in the back of my head." "What? Your finger?" I said. "No. It clearly is a very simple, no, a very intricate case." He said with his eyes closed. "Is it? I mean it seems simple to me, you have solved cases like this before haven't you?" I said. "I have solved many cases, Glen. But almost every one of them had clues so obvious in them that it seemed like…" I don't remember what he said after that, because at that moment I was gazing at him with a look he often gets from my side, the surprised one. Why was I looking at him with surprise? Well, because the 'simple cases' he was talking about were related to mass murders, rapes, and many untold miseries, starting from the case where a navy officer got dismissed and then was found dead in Nepal, to a lady being missing and then found dead in her own bedroom. That were the simple cases he was talking about.

It was around 4:00 pm when we left for the police station. It was not more than a minute of a walk to get there.

"Good to see you here Mr. Carter and Mr. Sanders. I was about to ring you up." said constable Rose, he seemed not so pleased. "Something wrong? Mr. Rose?" I asked. "Mr. Bruce committed suicide, I got the news just now. My agent, whom I put in charge to keep an eye on Mr. Bruce called me."

"Good heavens!! How did this happen?" I exclaimed.

"My agent said that he jumped from the roof of his house." said Mr. Rose. "I think we should leave; we have a gypsy arranged already."
