Chapter 16: Enchark: The Wyvern Quest III

Karlyle's body was enveloped in a coating of flames that rose high above him. His energy replenished swiftly and he returned to fighting the wyvern.

"So you come back? How was the wall?"

"I enjoyed it."

Without a moment to spare, Karlyle jumped into the air and spun around releasing a fiery crescent that shot towards Xavam's head. The plan couldn't be more obvious but Xavam was unaware of Foster's kinetic so he didn't know how his only weakness could be exploited.

Xavam flapped his wings with force. The wind extinguished Karlyle's attack so Xavam returned one with his wintery ice breath. He knew Karlyle would just melt right through it but he might as well have some fun before his meal.

Like clockwork, he had followed Xavam's plan and melted through the ice.

"How about just fire, Xavam?"

"I don't see why not."

The wyvern's breath of fire penetrated through the air. Karlyle's timely evasion caused it to hit the ground instead. Its tremendous explosion caused the ground in that area to sink and form a crater - if he hadn't dodged then he would've definitely not made it out alive.

Karlyle spread his arms out and spun them in a circular manner like a fan. Once the hands were are opposite points, one closer to the ground while the other above his head, a tornado of flame sprouted. It continued to grow forwards until Xavam's winds pushed it back, causing it to extinguish.

"Karlyle you have to do it."

Mimi teleported in to alert Karlyle as he was taking too long and Foster was still struggling to hurt the wyvern without his kinetic. She was also having no luck in penetrating its rough scales.

"Alright I'll aim for it now."

Karlyle flew up from his spot and Mimi teleported back to her position on Xavam's back, trying to get her sword in between or under its armour. Similar to when he fought with Owen, Karlyle continued to fly around Xavam's head while twirling around every now and then to release a ball of fire.

In response to the insect flying around him, Xavam spun his head around in all directions while breathing out currents of wind to try and knock down Karlyle.

While the two were brawling, Foster was trying to focus on the wyvern's head. His vision kept shifting from different spots - ranging from Xavam's forehead to the back of his large head. There were only a handful of tiny gaps that he could slightly reach through but still not enough to bring about an effect.

This continued movement of his sight did make Foster feel somewhat dizzy but it quickly cleared up when his sight came back to his own view. Foster rubbed his eyes and slightly pulled down, it was gravely annoying to him that the beast's mind was so close yet so far from his grasp.

Whenever Mimi's sword managed to get under one of the scales, a new one grew right in that gap and pushed the blade out. She sliced the scale each time that happened in frustration.

Karlyle remained stationary in one position and conjured a stream of fire towards Xavam's head. As predicted, Xavam breathed out his azure inferno to clash with Karlyle. The flames Karlyle produced stood no chance against Xavam's like last time but he had a plan.

Karlyle spun his body forwards, dragging the stream with him. Xavams fiery breath quickly made its way towards Karlyle as it had nothing to prevent its growth. Karlyle's movement was boosted by jets of fire so the stream was swiftly brought to collide with the top of Xavam's head.

"GRRRRRRRRR!"

Xavam roared in pain and his breath ceased right as it was about to reach Karlyle. The scales covering the wyvern's body disintegrated into glowing red dust, revealing the skin which hid underneath.

"Now Foster!"

Karlyle shouted and Foster reacted. With nothing in the way, Foster forced his way into Xavam's head and let out immense amounts of pain causing the wyvern to fall to the ground and continuously screech in agony.

The size of Xavam's brain was much larger than a human's so Foster had to strain himself in order to incapacitate the beast. The scales didn't manage to regenerate like Mimi hoped they wouldn't so she teleported onto Xavam's scalp and stabbed her sword into it until only the hilt could be seen.

Experiencing this excessive amount of pain, Xavam flapped his wings mindlessly hoping to save himself.

"What... is.. this?!"

Mimi pulled her sword out of Xavam's scalp and teleported away from his flailing body. Both her and Karlyle ended up in the same spot, admiring in horror as Foster's kinetic overpowered such a large and powerful beast. They both gave each other a glance in a 'did you know he could do that?' way, unaware of how strong Foster truly was once he got someone's brain under his dominion.

As successful as that plan was, the sight ended abruptly and the wyvern began to regain his strength while Foster collapsed onto the floor and his nose started to bleed. Mimi promptly teleported herself and Karlyle to the unconscious body that lay defenceless.

"That was smart for humans, I admit; but now it is time to suffer."

Unable to teleport all 3 of them as one was too weak, Mimi was unable to make a decision. Save herself and Karlyle while leaving Foster to die or to go down with him. It was her plan that put Foster in this predicament so leaving him was cowardly and she was no coward. If it was her time to go, it was her time to go.

Karlyle noticed that Mimi was surrendering and feelings of hatred for himself built up in his body. If he hadn't accepted the quest they wouldn't be in this situation so he must get them out.

Xavam charged his sapphire breath in a shockingly more powerful manner. Its size was double the usual that Xavam used so clashing with it was even more pointless than before but Karlyle was still going to try.

The stream of orange flames pierced through the centre of the blue inferno but it wouldn't reach far enough to hurt Xavam. However, a different idea came to Karlyle's head at this moment of close demise.

Karlyle pushed his hands outwards, guiding the overwhelmed fire of his to move apart and causing Xavam's breath to spread out with it. Xavam admired the human's stubbornness and inability to surrender like his companion.

"You exceeded my expectations, twice. I think I should show you the real myth of 'The Great Wyvern of Enchark'"

Xavam breathed out a light breeze and some fire surrounded the group. It had shone multiple different colours that formed to show the tale of Xavam, The Great Wyvern of Enchark.

Councilman Kyanar had one day conjured a spell that was capable of bringing powerful beasts into the world and he began with a wyvern. The spell brought forth an egg that was made of clear crystal and obsidian. The councilman had dearly taken care of the egg and it soon hatched, revealing a cute baby wyvern.

Deciding to name it Xavam, the councilman continued to hide him from the general population afraid of what controversy it might incite. After all, he was messing around with the forces of life and birth.

The other members of the council had grown to love the beast and Councilwoman Antaria had often volunteered to take care of it in her city. However, all four of them had play-fought with the baby - always letting it win - and taken care of it multiple times.

The baby quickly grew into an adult over the span of a decade which was when the councilman had no choice but to give up his dear child. He created an illusionary hiding enchantment around a random forest far from Enchark in which he hid Xavam. The spell worked to never reveal the forest, or the cavern that Xavam slept in, to any human until the enchantment weakened and the forest started to reappear to certain travellers. However, that one woman was the first who managed to escape and get to safety while all others died before they could tell the tale.

When the myth came from the woman who managed to escape, Councilman Kayanar was stunned to hear about Xavam again. Of course, he hadn't forgotten about his wyvern but he didn't expect others to know of his existence. While there were other dragons in the world, they all lived in a land far away from humanity. Another part that took him aback was that Xavam had apparently grown to be aggressive. Councilman Kyanar strengthened the enchantment without notifying the public and allowed the myth to disperse itself.

However, the story that Xavam showed did not match the previous one Karlyle was told. The woman didn't run from Xavam nor did he attack her. She took care of him and even befriended the wyvern.

The bond they made was something unexplainable. Upon their encounter, they played together for hours and all sorts of games; including hide and seek which she won every time. They roamed the forest together and Xavam showed her how none of the sounds she heard previously were dangerous, in fact, they were other animals that lived in the forest before the enchantment came along which had distorted their innocent chirps and purrs.

However, soon enough the enchantment of the forest corrected itself and exiled her away from it.

From each of their views, the other faded away into the eternal mist. The woman cried for days on end, missing the companion she made and how the power of the enchantment slowly stole the memories of him from her. She was left mentally scarred by their forced separation until eventually, death had come to comfort her.

"Now you know the true myth."

The colourful fires extinguished and Xavam came back into view with his head frighteningly close to the group.

"I miss her, I miss Angela. That's what her name was if you wished to know, Angela Cardenas."
