Chapter 3: Chapter 3: hatred for white

I closed the door and put my luggage on the bed. I unzipped it and took out a pink coat and a pair of plastic hand gloves with a face mask.

I quickly took off my shoes, changing into flip flops, and took off my jacket and put on my pink coat and hand gloves. I picked up the face mask from the bed and hung it on both ears. I grabbed the duster from the side of the bed. I strive to tie my hair, but it’s not long; it’s curly and short.

I started cleaning and heard a knock on the door. Before I could open the door, Daniel stuck his head into my room.

"Are you done yet?" he asked, scanning my room with his set of brown eyes.

"Can’t you wait for me to say, "Come in?" I complained, with my gaze fixed on him.

"Oh, sorry, my bad." He closed the door and knocked again. He can be so annoying at times.

"Come in," I growled.

"I just wanted to tell you if you are done, come and join us downstairs." He said, and slammed the door without waiting for my reply.

Minutes later, I was done with cleaning, although cleaning the bathroom gave me a lot of stress. I walked down the stairs and sat on the couch, watching my parents as they assisted each other in cleaning.

"Lovely, are you just going to sit there?" Daniel asked, glaring at me.

"Gosh! I am so tired." I lamented putting my hand on my face.

"You lazy ass." Daniel mumbled

"Don’t call my princess that." My dad stated

"I support Daniel, but Amber is being lazy." My mum declared

"I am not lazy; I am just in energy-saving mode, and besides, I am going to school tomorrow, people! Can’t you guys give me a break?" I said, rising from the couch.

"I will have to look for another job here and you are talking about taking a break? Me that is working? Am I a fool?" my dad asked, giving me a serious glare.

"I should have just attended a university back in our hometown." I replied.

"We want the best for you, Hun. Every step we take, we have your best interest in mind." My mum assured me with a smile.

"I'm sorry I didn’t understand you guys sooner. You guys are the best." I beamed, hugging my parents.

"We love you too, Amber." My dad replied and disengaged from the hug.

"Family drama." Daniel scoffed, dusting a Mona Lisa painting on the wall.

"It looks like the owner of this house is an art lover." I commented while looking at the painting.

"I think so; just look at the decor," my dad stated.

                Author’s POV

After a lot of cleaning, the family settled at the dining table, eating and chatting.

"I heard that the university is full of white folks (people)." Daniel stated, sipping orange juice.

Amber gripped her dress, hearing what he had just said, and Mrs. Darlington took hold of her hand from under the table.
