Chapter 10: Something about the history of magic

"Professor Quirrell is a good person, his classes will definitely be good..." Hermione said to Alex as they walked down the stairs.

Alex nodded his head, after looking sideways so no one would hear his words he said to Hermione, "That was definitely a very serious intense situation, I really thought we would be taken to a dark, dank, spider filled dungeon."

Although he was in debt as to why Professor Quirell was on the third floor, he figured that his class would be in a third floor classroom so he should be ahead of time to prepare some things.

"The stairs seemed to change again, now we can go straight to the second floor." Hermione noticed immediately as she looked at Airon who was apparently looking for Prince Caspian's painting.

Hearing this, Alex nodded absently. He could feel the stairs moving under his feet, so he didn't think much of it and looked around in search of interesting things to see.

Finding nothing else at this time, the two descended to the second floor. At this time, the second floor was not as deserted as before. Some apparently senior students walked past them talking and laughing, who seemed to have just come from breakfast.

This made Alex move a little closer to Hermione, in large crowds it made her secret ability activate unconsciously and she could feel a lot of waves of emotions from strangers. So he would rather not focus his attention on too many people, having someone close to him he could ignore for a while what was happening to him.

During the time he discovered this ability that could sometimes be annoying, he could control it but he was certainly not skilled in doing so. Looking around, he discovered that there were more than twenty classrooms around them, and the one they were looking for they would not find for some time.

"Excuse me, do you need help?" An elegant female voice suddenly came from the side.

Alex turned toward the sound and said respectfully, "Hello!"

"Are you a prefect?" Hermione visualized that the other party was a girl from Ravenclaw house and asked as she saw certain insignia that supported her assumptions.

"You are right, my name is Penelope Clearwater, Ravenclaw house prefect." Penelope walked in front of the two with a smile and said, "I see you two looking a bit lost so I dared to approach you, do you need any help?"

Long before Alex answered Hermione stepped forward and said, "This is Alex and I'm Hermione, as today is our first day of school we are looking for our first classroom. In turn we see the castle, do you know where room number 38 is?"

"So you are looking for a classroom? I was looking for a long time when I was a freshman, and I was almost late on the first day." Penelope said with a nostalgic smile, then nodded and pointed, "I'll take you to that place, it's not too far from where we're standing now."

"Thank you so much!" Hermione was quick to thank.

Penelope smiled and said nothing more, she led Alex and Hermane to the History of Magic classroom.

The classroom is on the southwest side of the second, it is an ordinary classroom from the outside. There is a rusty brass plaque on the right wall of the classroom door, which reads, "Classroom 38!"

"That's it, do you need anything else?" Penelope asked quietly.

"Since you're helping us, we have Charms and Defense Against the Dark Arts classes next, this is the number of the classrooms, do you know where they are located?" Alex asked, seizing the moment.

"Sure, tell me what kind of classroom it is? The classrooms are different for each year, so there should be special classrooms for first years."

"Charms class 54, and Defense Against the Dark Arts is 49."

Penelope thought about it for a moment and said, "Classroom 54 should be on the third floor, and classroom 49 is near the dungeon."

Hearing these two unexpected positions, Alex and Hermione quickly looked at each other.

When Penelope saw the doubt in their eyes, she continued, "Let me take them there, these classrooms although not hard to find, it's best they know where they are."

"Won't that be too much trouble? I don't think it will be hard for us, Hermione is good at finding everything but toads." Alex said as he patted Hermione, not wanting to disturb the others so much.

"Don't worry, I am a prefect after all and my duty is to help the first year students." Penelope said paying no attention to Alex's deep thoughts, giving them the impression that she likes to help people, which put Hermione and Alex at ease.

Alex and Hermione followed Penelope to the two remaining rooms where they would have classes today, they walked close to the rooms and after a few small signs they knew the place. Alex has to say that the enchantment room was a bit hidden, but with the help of a certain tapestry they were able to get there faster.

After the three people left the hallway and Penelope confirmed that Alex and Hermione had remembered the location of the rooms, Penelope said with a smile, "Then since you have no more doubts I'll leave, there will be classes later. If you have any questions, don't forget to ask them when you see me."

"Thank you very much!"

"You're welcome, I'll see you later." Penelope waved her hand and walked up the stairs before disappearing.

When she disappeared from sight, Alex turned his head to look at Hermione and asked slyly, "Do you think Ravenclaw is a good house too? Well, I can't say the same for Slytherin..."

"I always knew that Ravenclaw house students were good." Hermione said, and quickly added another sentence, "However, as I had told you, I stand by my thoughts that Gryffindor is better!"

Hearing this Alex flashed a strange smile. He had heard from Hermione's words that she had the decision to choose between Ravenclaw and Gryffindor at the selection ceremony yesterday. But in the end, she chose Gryffindor and that's because she has a good impression of this house, plus Dumbledore was one of the most famous graduates of that house. Alex reluctantly thinks that Gryffindor is not unique for her, just a strong impression.

However, Gryffindor is better than Ravenclaw in a certain sense: A person's wisdom may be innate, but courage often depends on the process of growth and experience. Generally speaking, wizards who graduated from Gryffindor have courage beyond that of ordinary people.

Alex said to Hermione, "There's still a little less than an hour to go to class, shall we go and get some rest?"

"Sounds like a good idea!"

The two made it back to Gryffindor Tower without any problems and without getting lost again due to the moving stairs. Alex, being a bit curious, was still very impressed with the route he took to get back.

"Alex, where did you go all morning? What an impression, you were with Hermione."

As soon as he entered the common room, Alex saw Ron looking at him and when he saw that he was with Hermione he didn't look surprised. Harry was standing next to him and didn't say anything, it looked like they were about to leave.

Hermione looked slightly at Ron, said nothing and went up the stairs to the dormitory in search of her books.

"Can you believe it? This castle is huge, they almost took me to the dungeon, that powerful wizard isn't powerful at all." Alex whispered quietly, "Have you guys had breakfast yet?"

"Not yet, we just got up since we were so tired yesterday. Wait, you went to the classroom, why with Hermione?"

"I was going anyway, I was waiting for you guys but none of you got up. When I was walking alone I ran into Hermione in the common room in the morning, so I went with her to look at the castle." Alex noticed some childish gestures that he decided to ignore as did Harry.

"In the morning, did she wake up as early as you?" said Ron in surprise.

"She should have woken up before me. She was brushing up on History of Magic, she's going to be an amazing student."

"What, studying?" Shouted Ron loudly, causing many people to look their way.

"Yeah, she's someone amazing, she even did a lot of book reviews over the vacations which will be good to keep in mind, she'll know a lot more than us." Alex was excited sharing this golden information, but Ron's next words baffled him.

"My God, that's terrible..." Ron felt a headache at the thought of the History of Magic textbook, and he couldn't imagine someone reading such a big book before the start of school. "I'd better go have breakfast with Harry first..."

"Yeah, hurry up guys, breakfast won't be long before it stops being delivered, you still have about half an hour left."

After hearing this, Ron and Harry ran out of the common room in a panic at the thought that they might run out of lunch. Alex looked at his back and shook his head helplessly, smiling slightly.

He went upstairs, grabbed the spell book and the History of Magic textbook, and returned to the common room.

Reading is like thinking, which is an integral part of Alex's daily life when he was alone.

He had just sat down on the sofa by the fire when he heard footsteps behind him. Holding two thick books, Hermione sat on the couch diagonally across from Alex.

"I'll be looking for information on Narnia and that supposed White Witch, from what I had read, she only appeared in the rebellion of the magical creatures and the war was a big one."

"Mmm, I'll be looking forward to that... Could be interesting."

After a brief exchange of words, Alex and Hermione began reading about the history of magic.

The flames flickered and the orange firelight glowed on the pages of the book, adding a bit of warmth to the atmosphere.

"It doesn't say much about the White Witch, but about what she caused..."

"A war that involved many of the wizards of the world, the most powerful ones united in order to face the White Witch, apparently many species became extinct in that war..."

Different pages appeared with information about the story, but Alex felt that they avoided talking about something very important in the story, something vital that helps the magical world to win the war.

As if something in the flames of the bonfire burst, Alex's eyes watched a silhouette around what appeared to be a Lion, that roar was so loud he could swear it was real.

As Alex stood motionless staring at the fire in the bonfire, Ron and Harry entered the common room.

"We've had really bad luck..." Ron sat down on the couch next to Alex, where Harry also sat. Harry waved at Hermione, but Ron ignored him completely.

"Are you okay?" Harry asked Alex so quietly.

"What's wrong?" Alex shook his head and closed the book.

"Today is definitely a terrible day..." Said Harry grumpily." "Those stairs moved us out of place and we're too late for breakfast."

Alex smiled and comforted him, "It's okay, I got lost in the morning too. If you missed breakfast, I have some snacks in the box."

"That's not the point." Ron said weakly, leaning back against the couch.

"What was it that happened to you guys?"

"We met Filch, it was horrible! Just like you described! He wanted to take us to the dungeon!"

Harry nodded sympathetically and said, "Because we got lost, somehow we made it to the third floor and at the end..."

"In the end we almost broke into the forbidden area on the third floor."  Ron paused and said, "I remember it was the way back to the dormitory, maybe I remembered wrong. Anyway, how could Filch treat us the way they treat prisoners?"

"You ran into him too!" Alex was surprised.

"You ran into him in the same place?" Ron looked at Alex interested.

"Hermione and I did the same thing in the morning, and Professor Quirrell helped us."

"Professor Quirrell helped us too!" Said Ron loudly, deeply surprised by this coincidence.

"Really?"

"Yes!" Said Ron with certainty, "It's a good thing it happened, otherwise Filch would have locked Harry and me in the dungeon.

Alex was lost in thought. Professor Quirrell stood there for over an hour, what was he doing? As he came to this question, he immediately thought of possibly that professor guarding the forbidden room.

"We have to go get our things for class shall we go together? You must know where the classroom is." Ron said with interest.

Alex nodded and looked at Hermione, "Hermione, do you want to go together?"

"I'll wait a minute." Hermione said.

Alex reminded her not to be late and then followed Ron and Harry out of the common room towards the classroom.
