Chapter 10: Building Quietly

▪︎ Build bridges when can, burn bridges when needed ▪︎

Elvie starred as Devlin got hit by the missile and fell down the building.

'I warned you.' It thought to itself, hopping down and landing without a sound.

Devlin was covered with burns and laying down there with no movements.

'That was a slow reaction time..' It sat beside him, and brought its knee to its chin.

Soon a few monsters roamed near them, staring at Elvie with curiosity. None of them reached near them, and stayed a distance.

Elvie stared at them with boredom in his eyes, "Slow down the destruction."

The words coming out of his mouth didn't sound human, it was a weird pitch.

The monsters seemed to understand it, and some nodded while the rest just strolled away.

Elevie's gaze went in a direction, 'Even after my life, I still have the short end of the stick. Tsk.'

Soon soldiers wearing Cerevauz uniform patrolling around, spotted Devlin lying there.

The small squad decided to save him, marching over to him and picking him up. Elvie just followed along, making sure they didn't have ill intentions.

When the sun slowly rose, Devlin and Elvie were at the soldiers' camp.

Elvie watched on and stared at the soldiers' discussion.

One of the soldiers who removed their helmet was a man in his early twenties. Half his face looked stitched together, even though both his eyes looked ever so fierce.

He rubbed his crew, cut blonde hair, and sighed, "A kid survived all those monsters. He can't be normal. As I've said."

Another man who aggressively removed his helmet threw it on the ground, causing the first man to glare at him.

"We can't keep saving anyone we meet!" The second man yelled, his dark red eyes contrasting with the first man's blue eyes, "Captain," He hissed, his long red hair seeming to have the ability to become flame at any moment, "It's dangerous for our team."

"Isn't that the point of our squad?" The captain frowned, seeing his man behaving so rudely, "Why did you join knowing full damn well what we do!?" He spread his arms apart, "Tell me! Marcus?"

Before Marcus could answer, a third man burgled in on their conversation, "Captain, are we going to return to base or continue searching?"

The captain took a deep breath and stared at the intruder who felt sweat starting to form.

"I will decide later." He answered and stomped away.

Marcus looked at the soldier who intruded in the conversation. He had blue hair reaching his ears and bright blue eyes.

"Thanks." Marcus's eyes darted away, but his words brought a grin to Sky's face.

"Let's get enough points and join the research squad!" Sky patted Marcus' shoulder, "Saving the world our way, eh?"

Marcus frowned, "We are twins. Why are we so different?" His head lowered, looking at his boots, "You are always the one our parents are proud of. While I'm nothing." He took a step back and stared at Sky, "Even my ability is useless!"

"Well," Sky took a step back, "So what? As long you got one, it's all good."

Marcus' eyes seemed to be suddenly blazed with anger as he shouted, "All good my ass! You and I both know it's a lie!" He gritted his teeth, "Stop comforting me with your lies."

Staring at each other, Marcus left first.

The whole time, Elvie was just watching them argue.

'Useless power, interesting.' It walked towards the captain tent and saw the captain pressing on the air, 'Systems are weird.'

It's left eye glowed white, and it could access the captain's system.

'Bribery, that's interesting..' It thought, watching the conversation the captain, Jett, had with someone else.

It smirked, slowly walking towards Sky's tent.

'Humans are so, so greedy..' It felt amused, watching their conversation through the system, 'As technology increases, so do human desires.'

It slowly walked to Marcus's tent and watched him just laying and staring at the ceiling.

'His not using his system?' It noticed, and suddenly felt Marcus's eyes on him.

"Who's there?" He asked, "I can hear your thoughts." He quickly grabbed his shirt and wore it, sitting straight up.

'Amusing..' Elvie thought, 'Someone not from the forgotten land knows my existence..'

Marcus leaned forward, "The forgotten land?.." He kept mumbling that word, eyes darted around.

Soon, his eyes opened wide,"The myth was true?!" He almost shouted but kept his voice down.

'What myth?' At this point, Elvie was seated opposite of Marcus.

"The land where the scientist made to escape the era of chaos." Marcus rubbed his head, trying to remember everything he read.

He opened up his white system and went into the note app, splitting the system panels into multiple ones as it surrounded both of them in a circle.

Elvie looked at all the notes ever taken and felt bluffed.

He stared at Marcus again, noticing the man before him didn't look very muscular, but his intelligence was another level.

'You can be an engineer.' It thought, staring at the notes, 'You had tried making something before, right?'

Marcus nodded, and his eyes shone when he heard Elvie's praise even without knowing why.

Marcus went to the end of his tent and grabbed his bag. He took out what seemed like a plastic plate.

He pressed on a button and threw it where he sat.

Lines covered the plate, and it slowly unfolded and became a hovering board.

'You managed to compress so much in something so small? Not like a ball or a case. But a simple plastic plate..' Elvie admired the board, 'You wish to save the world?'

He remembered what Sky told Marcus. Marcus didn't hesitate and nodded.

'Why did you hesitate when saving that boy?' It asked, now curious with Marcus' answers.

"Someone laying still alive with countless dead around? And monsters roaming. I was afraid of it being a trap." Marcus said as he sat on the hovering board, showing its strength, "I can't lose my team for one person."

Elvie nodded and stood up even though Marcus couldn't see it and asked, 'Would you like to join us in bridging the lands?'
