Chapter 10: Little Did She Know

There was nothing more than white as far as the eye could see. Liling could feel the water surrounding her, lifting her, it was the lightest she had felt in years.

There was a compelling beam of light shining from the very top of the enclosure, and she could feel herself being pulled towards it. She slowly swam up-wards, her right arm gingerly stretched out in front of her, ready to discover what lay above her, when all of a sudden, she felt a tug at her left foot, then one on her right, she looked down, and all she could see were heavy metal chains tied around her legs,

She felt a sharp jerk on her left arm and before she could process anything, chains were bound to each of her limbs, she pulled and kicked trying to get them off, but to no avail, they just just seemed to be getting tighter

She finally gave up trying, now knowing very well how pointless it was to struggle. She could suddenly feel herself getting pulled down, slowly at first but the speed kept increasing until,

'BAM'

Liling woke up with a start, her eyes suddenly jerking open, she seemed visibly disoriented. She turned right- wall-turned the other way-Li Hao- then finally faced forward, the lights above the operating theatre flickered before finally going off,

"Good, you're awake", he said once he noticed the tiny movements beside him, the doctor walked out just then, wearing his blood stained scrubs, and a look of tiredness over his aged face,

It took a lot of restraint for her to not shoot out of her chair to enquire about her brother, but she managed that, standing up slowly and walking towards him, a lump formed in her throat as she tried to speak, so she was grateful when he spoke up first

"Fortunately the operation was a success, and he's no longer in danger", his words sent a wave of relief over her, her brother was going to be okay,

"but sadly he can't be visited now, he is still under the effects of the anaesthesia, and he will need to be kept in the ICU unit, if there are no complications, he will be moved to a normal ward, where we will continue monitoring his recovery,"

The doctor went on describing how the new heart could get rejected, and the drugs he might need to take, but other than that, her brain couldn't pick up anything else, the fact that her brother could return to the real world after spending so much time in hospital, how he could finally be okay, it suddenly overwhelmed her

The doctor soon left, and she watched her brother being wheeled out by some of the other medical personnel involved the operation, the barrage of emotions that hit her could not be put into words, she could feel the years worth of tears threatening to spill, and the smile tugging at her lips, but she told herself not yet, it wasn't completely over yet

She turned her attention to Li Hao, he was standing up now, just a few steps away from her, she could easily make out the obvious relief in his expression, and she felt more than grateful for his support,

She gave a small bow his direction while thanking him again, and he replied with his usual nonchalant, "It's alright",

"If there's any way I can repay you, you should let me know"

"What about accepting my proposal?", his tone was almost playful, because he was mostly joking

"Alright then, I accept"

"It's alright if you still don't want to..., wait did you just agree?", he had already braced himself for another rejection, so he did a double take when he realized what her actual reply was,

"yes, well if the offer is still open that is"

"It is", his reply was very quick, like he was scared she would take it back,

"So, when do we...do it,", She had struggled finding the right words, and tried hiding the blush slowly creeping up her neck as she realized how he might misunderstand her,

He fought the urge to tease and turn her even redder, but advised himself against it, he was already a weirdo in her eyes, it was best to not tarnish his image even more,

"Anytime, you're ready", he replied,

"What about tomorrow afternoon?"

"Sure, if that's what you want, I'll get everything prepared for tomorrow, you just need to meet me at the registry, I'll text you the location and time once its all done"

She thanked him again and they parted ways after finalizing things in the hospital,

As he walked away she couldn't help but think about how things had played out that day, her brother was finally cured of his cardiomyopathy, she was getting married the next day, and soon she would leave The Organization,

It was all starting to sink in, and it was so surreal, she thought she might still be dreaming, ultimately, all she hoped was for things to go uphill from here, but little did she know what lay in store for her, she was gonna be in for a long ride
