Chapter 23: Who is he?

Our tour led us out into the large compound of the mansion, but my mind still remained in the kitchen with Dimitra, the kitchen lady.

She seemed to have a lot to say about Jordan, and I wanted to hear all of it. I also wanted to know why she spoke so fearlessly about him, calling him names even, unlike the other employees I had met. It didn't feel like she was just another one of his employees. She seemed to be more, and it made me very curious.

It didn't make sense to me, a lot of pieces were missing, and I wanted to know those. But mam Nana would not let me dwell on my thoughts. She kept making comments that I did not care about, and distracting my train of thoughts. When I finally looked up, I was met by a sight of the most beautiful water body I had ever seen in all my life.

The fence surrounding the mansion was built with low iron panels, so that I could see the sea clearly, all the way from the house. Jordan had been right about it after all. Blue waters. Crystal blue waters, stretching for miles and miles. I was breathless as I gazed upon the shimmering surface of the water, with the rays of the sun bouncing off the surface, and painting lights in the air around it. It was so beautiful, I felt like crying just by watching it.

Mam Nana sensed my distraction and quickly stepped in my line of view.

"We will save the best side for last." She said to me, putting her hands up as I kept looking past her to look at the sea. "I show you the beach after I finish showing the house. Deal!" She insisted.

I looked down at her with a frown.

"Deal!" She stamped out, and I groaned. But then I gave in and followed her as she resumed the tour.

"I tell you, you like it if you come out." She said to me as she led me on, then proceeded to pointing out buildings and making explanations like a true tour guard.

"Over there. That is servant houses. We stay there through the week, then some go to mainland for weekends, or we stay, if you love." She explained, smiling.

I looked over at the block of buildings she was pointing at. They stood apart from the main mansion, beyond the low fence that surrounded the mansion. An entire village could live in there. The island wasn't as empty as I had imagined after all. I had not noticed the mini-village when we came in the previous night. I wondered just how many staff worked in the mansion, to require that amount of space for their quarters.

"How many staff are there on this island?" I asked aloud, as I could no longer contain my curiosity.

"We many! If you include the boss men too, we are much, just like small town." Mam Nana replied. "You see, not all of the boss men stay here always. Some come, some go. Some stay every time, even if boss is not here. But sometimes, all of them come and the whole place will full. Especially during boss business time here. They come to keep safe, all of us. Some of boss business partners can dangerous, a little." Mam Nana explained.

I was about to ask her to explain more about the 'boss business time' part and 'dangerous business partners', when she suddenly pointed towards a building at the back of the house that looked like a giant garage. It was also standing independently from the main mansion, but it was within the fence, and it's doors were made of solid metal cast.

"There, that is boss business place." Mam Nana announced. "No one of us is allowed to go there. Even you, kallos. Only the boss and boss men can go there. Especially when the business partners come to island." She said. Then she added, "Off limits!" With a big grin that told me she had either put a lot of effort into learning that phrase, or she had heard it for countless times.

But it wasn't the impressive phrase that gnawed at my mind. It was the fact that Jordan was turning out to be more and more mysterious as I had earlier feared. He even had the shady 'off-limits', standalone building, that characterized every serial killer story, or story of a psychopath ever told. I didn't like it at all. I didn't like the feeling. It was beginning to feel like the beginning of a horror movie, and I didn't like that I was playing a role in it. Worse of all, the seemingly villain of this horror movie was my captor, who had me locked up in his mansion, on his own island, and surrounded by his own people. I didn't like it!

"Tell me mam Nana." I said to the old lady, holding her arm desperately. "What kind of business does your boss do? What kind of people is he involved with." I asked.

"I do not know. It is not of our business. But we get plenty 'xèni' around here for business time. Foreigners. From all part of world. Russia, German, some Asia, from Greece here too, plenty plenty like that." Mam Nana listed out.

I sighed in frustration. Nothing she had said could give me any clue as to what I really wanted to know. So I asked her directly, in case she knew, but just choose to pretend not to.

"Does the boss do drugs? Is he a drug dealer, or a human trafficker, or is he a dangerous man?" I asked directly.

Mam Nana gasped and quickly put her hands over my mouth.

"Don't say that child!" She scolded me. "I have work with the boss for over fifteen years and more now, and I tell you that your husband is good person. He hurt nobody for no reason." She said. "He live decent life, and do good business. He is good person!"

"Then how can you not know what he does?" I asked exasperatedly.

Mam Nana looked at me seriously, then she said.

"Forgive me kallos, but if anyone should know what the boss do, is you. You marry him. You know him, that why you marry him."

I was dumbstruck. She had a point, I could not argue that. But I could tell that she didn't mean what she had said. her eyes showed it. She knew that I didn't know much about Jordan, but she had said what she did to end the interrogation.

"Come now. I show you the swimming pool. It nothing like the beach, but is heaven too!" Mam Nana announced innocently, as if she had not just dropped a crippling jibe on me.

I followed her wordlessly, but I kept looking back at the shady building. I wondered if Jordan was in there, probably preparing for his next dirty business. Did he have little children or kidnapped women in there? Hidden in some underground cellar, and packaging cocaine? Would I become one of them soon?.

I had not seen him all morning and throughout our tour. If he wasn't in his room, as mam Nana had informed me earlier, then he was most probably in there.

But I didn't have to wonder about that much longer when we arrived at the pool. The moment we stepped on the platform, we were startled when someone suddenly emerged out of the water.

I turned around just in time to see Jordan, rising out of the water like a merman! A sea god!

He placed his hands on the platform, and in one swift lift, jerked himself completely out of the water.

I went breathless for the second time that morning, as I stood there watching Jordan dripping with water from head to feet. He looked so beautiful! Even the beautiful sight of the beach which I had seen earlier, could not compare to this. Jordan looked sinfully breathtaking, and suddenly, I forgot all about my suspicions and assumption that he was some drug Lord or serial criminal. The sight before me had me brain dead and my mind on a blank.

Until now, I had only seen Jordan in a suit every time we met. I had always imagined that he had a great body beneath all that covering. But then, none of my imaginations could have prepared me for the sight before me. He was built like a god, a body to be worshipped! I wanted to worship it so much that I didn't realize I was staring too long and too hard. The only thing dangerous about the man before my eyes was the fact that the sight was making me loose my mind. I was gawking at him like a complete loser. My eyes ate him up, traveling up his body, starting from his strong, long legs, built like ancient greek pillars and with the stamina of a tower, even as he walked. His stomach, his chest, his arms! The gods must have taken an entire day out to carve out those biceps, those arms, that abdomen. I wanted to rest my head against it. Or did the gods breath into the statue of a mini-god to bring it to life, and then send it down to earth?

My eyes continued up his body, to his broad shoulders, then his thick neck, and on to his sharp jaws, his slick nose and those eyes. Those beautifully piercing eyes that seemed to be looking into my soul. He was looking into my soul!

And then I suddenly realized, he was looking straight at me, with a smirk on his face.

Jordan had seen everything.

He had watched me gobble him up with my eyes, like a completely thirsty woman.

I cringed in embarrassment as I quickly looked away.
