Chapter 3: God of Chaos

The next morning Ego woke up slowly wiping his eyes before trying to soothe the pain in his neck.

The coldness of his apartment room caused him to shiver, it was always coldest in the morning to him. Everyday life for someone like him was pretty simple.

Having no powers meant he isn't able to do most things human civilization is now able to do. Some people even compared him to that of a caveman in a futuristic society!

Even being able to connect with basic devices such as personal HUD, in this day and age required a certain amount of genetic potential which he did not have.

Whenever he left his apartment, Ego would be shunned by countless gazes. Luckily not every human was like this though. No matter how bad they treated him, he never held it against them.

It was natural for people to look down on things they thought were inferior. Even though it didn't do much to prevent him from feeling like an animal on display.

Ego stood up stretching his limbs and walked to the bathroom. "I can't help but worry about the people in Jack's territory.." His voice was raspy, sounding similar to someone that would announce the next song on a jazz radio station on old Earth. He laughed having noticed his tone but his face quickly soured after smelling his breath.

"Ugh my breath smells horrible!" Hastening his movements Ego arrived at the bathroom and began brushing his teeth and getting ready for the day. Half an hour later he finished everything he needed to do before going to make breakfast.

"I must've slept wrong. My neck hurts like hell man." Ego rubbed the base of his neck where the pain bothered him. "Maybe I should go to a chiropractor. First I needa go to the store." He said solidifying his plans for the day. After devouring the eggs and bacon he cooked, Ego left the house to go on another walk. Today wasn't as eventful as yesterday. Although he couldn't help but feel something was off.

He sniffed the air and recognized the familiar smell of rain. "Guess I'll have to speed up my plans so I don't get caught in the rain."

Ego walked to the superstore. Something kept triggering his fight or flight response but there was no danger in sight.

Instead of fighting, his body wanted to run! What was causing this strong reaction?

Superstore are supposed to have 'everything' anyone could think of aside from weapons. As you may know, a store that appeals to so many kinds of goodies was bound to have tons of foot traffic

The pain in his neck began hurting so much that by the time he got through the door, Ego fell to his knees screaming in pain.

His ears rang, nose started bleeding, and vision was black. "AGHH" People gathered around him to see what was going on.

"Hey Ego are you okay? Someone call the emergency medical units!" Being the only human born in over one thousand years without a specialty is quite the news spreader. Naturally Ego became one of the most popular 'unpopular' humans on Nexus!

As people crowded around him Ego's head grew huge then…

"AHHHHH-" SPLAT!!

A nasty gushy noise rang moments before blood, brains and other fluids were flung in every direction.

The shell-shocked assembly of people stood there in silence. Eventually the reality of the situation started to soak in. All hell broke loose and everyone ran for their lives!

"Someone killed Ego!"

"Terrorist attack!!"

"Someone call the police! Where are the medical units?!"

Kids stared in dismay at the dead body. But it didn't stop there, almost immediately afterward Ego's body then started spraying bodily fluids everywhere making a mess.

Over a dozen kids collapsed; little girls cried and boys seemed to have lost their voice. Their previously peaceful and innocent lives have been forever tarnished with trauma.

Minutes went on until the medical unit arrived and blocked off the area. "His head exploded, but none of our scanners can detect how it happened..Who did this to him?" One of the officers asked.

"Our data on this…Ego Sting, says he's powerless. Maybe someone had a vendetta against him?" Another medical officer replied.

They all wore blue robes covered in green stripes.

After the rise of super abilities in humans, the government tried to be diverse with most of their medical and police squads by mixing all three human types together. This team had one Techno-Human and 2 Magi-Humans. Although there are teams of one archetype, those are usually specialist squads.

The team swiftly cleaned up Ego's splattered remains and transported it to a government building designed to perform autopsies.

————————————

"What caused Ego's death?" A man with a raspy voice said as he looked at the deformed body. He had a strange burn scar on his forehead and wore a badge that resembled a Unicursal Hexagram.

"W-we don't know sir." One of the workers in blue doctor's scrubs said, scrambling through all of the data they've gathered.

Another doctor stepped forward "Video footage only shows him walking into the store and his head exploding. We've had experts from all three fields study his brain and they have all noticed that there were signs of magic being used to pop his head, but we've never seen readings like this before!"

The doctor turned to look over video footage put through a special filter that showed some kind of vortex of mana swirling directly into Ego's head moments before its explosion.

"That's not good enough. He's the only human in the new age to be born giftless, and no one can figure out how he died? Pathetic." The older man turned to watch the recorded footage.

"We need to figure this out quickly before Nova finds out! Send him to area 732. Have him studied. I'll supply the money from my own account as long as I get some results. Otherwise I'll have your heads on pikes!" The man turned around and stormed out of the room with the doctors scrambling to move Ego's body to the mentioned location.

One doctor with pink lipstick that matched her eyes, followed after him shaking her head. "I cannot believe this."

————————————

Violet Bay. A large body of water that is well, violet. It's a beautiful tourist location as well as it being home to a secret government facility known as Area 732. Of course, no one actually knows this exists, or that they swim directly above a government facility.

The government built this here to study tourists when they used their powers in water, air or on land within this vicinity. 732 is one of the smaller secret areas owned, but it being called 'small' is misleading. It's around three hundred and twenty two meters in length by two hundred and forty one meters wide.

In one of the many rooms, Ego's body was hooked up to machines and tubes. Behind a one way window stood the man with a scar on his forehead.

"It's been 3 months, have you discovered what could have caused his death?" He sounded slightly irritated but his gaze did not move from Ego's lifeless body.

"No sir, we've had our specialists in detection magic, tracking, and other information gathering tactics search but we've not found a point of origin. It's like this vast amount of mana came out of nowhere." She said as her hands constantly typed away on a computer.

Her pink eyes flashed with excitement. She may not be one of the most magically talented women out there but her life is dedicated to research and the study of alien-tech and magic.

"What's interesting is everyone who has tried to find the source, went mad or was pulled into a coma! It's almost like there's a curse keeping anyone from finding whoever did this!" Even with all the risks involved, this was right up her alley!

Hearing her words forced him to peel his eyes away from the body to look at her. His stern face, stiff as a stone wall. "Yes, I've heard this in the reports. Have you found out how to cure these men and women of their insanity and comatose?"

She continued typing, feeling his dagger-like stare. "Not yet. This magic is nothing we've ever seen before. Our current understanding simply can't find solutions for either of these problems."

He grunted in disappointment. "Pathetic!" The man slammed his fist against the one way window behind him which shook from the impact.

"I don't care what it takes. You've already studied his brain, I expect this to be done soon. You have 6 months, Susan." He walks out. The room is filled with more silence aside from the various machines beeping, and tapping on a keyboard.

————————————

People often question what happens after death. Is there a heaven or hell? Do you get reincarnated? Is there some kind of life after death? No one truly knew the answer for that.

After his death, Ego experienced the very thing many questioned. He appeared in the middle of a blinding white void. Oddly enough, he still kept his body.

"AHHhhh…" The pain in his neck went away and his vision came back into focus. "Oh, I'm okay." He noticed the unfamiliar setting. "Where the hell am I? Wasn't I just inside the superstore?" After waiting for what felt like a few hours, he heard an unfamiliar voice shake the void.

"You're dead Ego." This voice was very energetic but had a hint of mystery.

Ego looked around but found no source to the voice. "Dead?" He recalled the pain in his neck. "My head started hurting, I fell to my knees…oh-"

This realization caused his eyes to widen. "Yeah, guess that would make sense." A nervous laugh escapes his mouth. Ego began to run through his bucket list of items he wanted to do while alive. Now, he'll never be able to complete it. The emotional effects of this slowly crept through his body. "Does this mean you are God??"

Laughter echoed through the void. A swarm of red and white energy whirled in a funnel in front of Ego. After the performance was over, a man stood in its place.

"To answer your question. Yes, I am in fact 'God.' But, I'm not the only one, a Pantheon of gods exists. I am one, Konglu, Twin God, God of Chaos. I am also the person who killed you." The God of Chaos, Konglu, had pale skin almost identical to the color of this void. He wore a red flannel button up shirt with a black muscle shirt underneath.

His iris was glowed ice-white with illuminated scarlet colored pupils. He has several tattoos and piercings, as well as a pair of red rimmed glasses. This along with his black ripped jeans that sported a chain along the loops in his pants, and red shoes gave him a pretty stylish look.

Konglu's appearance made him look like some otherworldly being. His jagged and sharp teeth added to the unsettling aura

Ego took in his appearance and the words he spoke. His world was now flipped upside down. "God of Chaos..why did you kill me?" He was struggling to see what he's done wrong.

The god just looked at him and smiled. "I wanted to be dramatic!" Konglu responded gleefully. "That's all. But I must say, you are quite interesting. After nearly two thousand years, you're the only human to have no chance of developing special abilities. Why is that?"

Konglu floated around Ego, examining the teen as he spoke. "I don't know, maybe I'm just unlucky. Why are you-" Before finishing he was interrupted.

"If you had the power to 'change the world' when you were alive, how would you go about it?" The crazed god asked, standing in front of the boy once again. He knew every human aspired to be their world's savior whether that was solving huge problems or unifying their people.

Ego looked at the god and answered simply. "I would do what I can. Our world has been invaded and I believe humanity has become too comfortable with them. I don't know where they came from, but they could be plotting to take over the world; It's because of them our world is fucked up! Have you seen how some of the vegetation has mutated? Even some animals are affected by this. The energy seeping through those portals is changing our world more and more every day!" His words were full of conviction which pleased the god.

"Anndd if you could go back with the power to make a change, would you actually do it?" Konglu was all smiles because he already knew the answer.

"Yes!" His voice echoed, "But I'm dead and those dreams are forever forgotten." Ego shook his head.

Konglu clicked his tongue. "Tsk tsk tsk, you shouldn't be so quick to throw your dreams away. Like I said, you're an interesting human. I'll let you go back. I'll even throw in that special power for ya! I like you, Ego Sting." Konglu pulled out his glowing red pistol made out of strange technology.

The god aimed it at Ego's head and pulled the trigger.

BANG

A loud noise rang, and Ego's body vanished. Konglu stood there with a devious smile on his face. "Things are about to get exciting! Your imagination is the limit little Stingray. Good luck, and may the forces of chaos be with you." He blew the smoke from its barrel while twirling the pistol then holstering it.

The crazed god turned around and vanished.

————————————

Suddenly a loud beeping came from the doctor's computers. The heartbeat monitor started to beep rhythmically, signifying Ego is alive. Susan turned quickly, running to her other monitors to investigate. "How is this possible?!"

A truly amazing sight came to being. Ego's lifeless body floated into the air, his brain started repairing itself! His skin peeled off his body, being compacted into an orb before spreading back over him. After a full body repair, Ego was encased in a red and white shell of energy.

"What kind of magic is this? This is completely different from necromancy.." At her current understanding, necromancy could only partially bring back the dead.

What Susan saw now was some kind of full reanimation. She swiftly wrote down her observations in a notepad and recorded the visuals she witnessed.

Moments later the doctor dropped everything and froze as Ego body floated down and sat straight up, the shell of energy started cracking like an egg. After the process was complete, Ego looked out with open eyes. Susan became ecstatic and immediately called for her boss.

"He's alive!"
