Chapter 73: CHAPTER 70

Tristan and Malia spent the whole night out but unfortunately they weren't able to find the beta they were looking for no matter how much they searched and Tristan couldn't use his special method of tracking because they didn't have a large concentration of his blood to use as a medium.

With their endeavor not bearing any results, they had to return home with an extra sulky Malia in tow.

Things seemed to have calmed down after Kate's funeral with everything seemingly returning to how they were. At least it would have been so if not for the newest series of deaths that have once again started in Beacon Hills.

One of the people that were affected by this the most was Noah Stilinski, Beacon Hills County Sheriff.

He had just managed to put to rest a six year old case and the animal attacks seemed to have stopped before it started all over again.

If he had to be truthfully honest with himself, sometimes Beacon Hills scares him out of his wits. The number of unexplained events he'd seen and heard of was more than enough to paint the town as something eerily similar to the haunted ghost towns shown in horror movies.

Fortunately or unfortunately for him, his logical mind stopped him from believing in any silly conspiracy theory that his subconscious instantly conjures up when something out of the natural happens.

But luckily for him, he still wasn't out of his last wits yet.

Other than Noah Stilinski, there were also other people who were reacting to the new changes that were subtly coming into play and one of those people was the newest Alpha in Beacon Hills, Derek Hale.

After convincing Scott to join his pack, even though the young teen was extremely unwilling, Derek then started the endeavor of forming the Hale pack after six years of the original Hales' deaths in the fire.

He, more than anyone, knew the importance of a pack and also the urgency of which he needed them to be ready for the coming conflicts against the Argents.

The first person he had bitten was Jackson after Scott had told him how his fellow co-captain had used his knowledge of Scott's nature to blackmail him.

Since he had a very willing target to experiment his first bite with, Derek didn't put up much of an opposition and gave Jackson the bite. Already knowing how self-important people like Jackson were, he didn't try to convince him of the importance of a pack and left him to go off on his own, knowing the boy would come back to him sooner or later after realizing the dangers that came with being a werewolf.

The next person he bit wasn't something he planned but nevertheless accepted. He had given Isaac the bite after realizing how shitty the boy's life was and with the promise of a complete transformation came with it loyalty, something he didn't have in spades at the moment.

He had wanted to recruit the new omega that had been going around robing dead bodies of their organs but unfortunately the Argents had gotten to him first and he had to watch as patriarch of the Argent family, Gerard, cleanly bisect him from the waist down.

At least he finally confirmed why they really were here after hearing Gerard's words.

War.

And he was going to give them that in spades.

.....

Tristan groaned for the umpteenth time as he repeated something he's been telling to Malia for a while now.

"It's not our fault that we couldn't find the beta. Maybe he knew we were coming and bolted."

Malia just grumbled in annoyance as she remembered how they wasted the whole night before accepting the fact that they were not coming across the omega that night.

Seeing as she wasn't listening, Tristan shrugged as he knew that she'd sooner or later come around once she gets out of the funk that she willingly put herself in.

"How about we go out again and find him?" Malia suddenly suggested out of the blue.

Tristan looked at her skeptically as he answered. "It might turn out to be another waste of time."

"Then we keep going. It's not as if the night will hinder us anyway." Malia shrugged as if it was no biggie. Tristan had his sport to help him out on a daily basis but she couldn't go on her normal hunt because of something in the ecosystem. If she can't hunt animals, she'll hunt a stray wolf, maybe even a psychopathic one.

"Are you sure it's not the full moon getting to you?" Tristan asked.

"Who knows?" Was Malia's simple reply. It was in her veins and she could tell that Beacon Hills was about to get real hectic and being the stubborn girl she is, she wanted to partake in the upcoming bloody carnival while everyone else was busy having guns and claws pointed at each other's throats.

"He keeps smelling weird with every passing day." Tristan muttered as he saw Jackson stomping off angrily to who knows where.

"Think the bite did something weird to him? Maybe like a mutation?"

"Who knows?" Tristan said. "We might have to keep an eye on him just in case. I'm more worried about Jackson shifting or clawing out someone's throat in the middle of the day than I ever was about McCall. Surprisingly enough."

They both cut a corner and made their way towards the library for a little study time while continuing their conversation in low voices.

"What of the new boy?" Malia inquired curiously.

"Lahey? He's in the station for questioning regarding his father's death. The full moon is tonight and hopefully Derek knows what he's doing so he can prevent a bloodbath from happening in the Sheriff's station." Tristan's voice was slightly guarded as he said that while picturing the scene of chaos that such an occurrence will spiral into.

People will run away from Beacon Hills in droves.

"Well forget about Derek for now. We have to focus on Biology instead."

....

The two of them weaved through the shadows the night's sky painted all over Beacon Hills, all the while remaining cautious so nobody could catch a visual of them.

Two pairs of chilling blue eyes moved with agile ease as Malia successfully dragged Tristan into her 'desperate' chase as Tristan had so aptly put it.

The both of them felt invigorated and the soothing feeling of primal strength coursed through their veins as the moon hung high in the sky, a few degrees off from its midnight position.

They easily avoided anyone seeing them with Tristan on the lead as he had his senses on max which was steadily creeping near the 100 meter mark.

None of them said anything as they wholly focused on tracking their prey, letting their emotion fluctuations speak for them.

All of a sudden, Tristan's nose itched in irritation as he picked up something chilling.

He couldn't quite place a finger on what the sensation he picked up felt like but he knew one thing based on his own body reactions.

A predator.

Malia sensed his small twitches and just let him lead the way while she followed one step behind as Tristan slowed himself down for the both of them to move at a uniform pace.

-!!

His head snapped to his left as he sensed something very fast passed over them.

"There." He said and followed after whatever that monster was. Malia also caught the sharp movement of the whatever creature it was so they both kicked their full speed into motions and gained in on its tail.

The 'thing' was heading towards a specific direction so Tristan put more speed into his legs and started gaining swiftly on it.

The creature finally noticed them and turned his head towards them and let out a bloodcurdling snarl filled with a chilling cold bloodthirsty momentum.

Tristan smirked as he felt the promise of blood the creature gave him should he come any closer.

Ignoring Tristan once again, the creature jumped down from the rooms and started leaping across yards as he neared a specific house.

"That's Lahey's house." Tristan said and his smirk grew as he saw the creature's intended destination and with no more caution, he pushed himself further and closed the already shrinking distance and crashed against the creature, sending them flying from the window into the house.

Malia arrived just a few seconds after and their eyes widened in surprise as they saw the full body of the that they were chasing.

A full greenish black scaled reptilian body with no hair. Razor-sharp thin teeth under a flat nose with sickening yellow slit eyes and a long prehensile tail with long, almost pale white, claws.

All in all, it looked like…

"It looks like an overgrown lizard." Malia beat Tristan by one second to the plainly seen yet astute observation. "What kind of creature is it? Hey, can you hear me?"

Tristan stopped her from trying to speak to whatever was in front of them. "Don't bother Malia. All I can get from it are primal emotions. They are not in control."

"So what are we doing?" She asked as the two of them slowly circled the creature in front of them while analyzing it as much as they could, with it also doing the same.

"They might not be in control but he's more than ready to attack us." Tristan said with a dry chuckle as his eyes shrunk into dots with his full attention on the creature in front of them. "Hell, it's just waiting for the right moment to sink its claws into our hearts."

On a full moon lit night, a vampire, a werecoyote and a lizard faced off against each other.
