Chapter 2: Enough

"Why are you so quiet? Did something happen?" Lucas, her twin brother asked.

They were in the car on their way home when he heard her sigh. She was still thinking about Caroline. The words she said and the look in her eyes.

"Have you ever had a chance to talk to Caroline?" She asked.

Lucas frowned. "Caden's sister? I talked to her once. But she didn't even say a single word."

"I see. She's in seventh grade?"

Lucas nodded. "Yeah. She just started her junior year. Why did you suddenly ask about her?"

She sighed. "I saw her earlier and my friends said she had some trouble so I went to the principal's office to check on her. But she didn't want to talk to me."

"She's a troubled child. Uncle Jayden and Aunt Peggy somehow lost touch with her. Caden didn't even know he has a sister."

She was surprised. "What do you mean Caden didn't know?"

Lucas was taken aback. The look on his face showed that he said something he shouldn't have.

"Alira, there are things that are better to be kept a secret. I'm sorry, but I can't tell you more." Lucas said.

She chuckled. "A secret? Like what they did to me? To Caden? It's been twelve years, Lucas. I followed every order they asked me to do. I have been keeping the events from twelve years ago a secret. Isn't that enough? I'm old enough to understand what was happening."

Lucas sighed. He turned to her and gently touched her chin.

"I know. I never liked what they did to you and that jerk. But I'm not in a position to tell you everything. Because like you, I'm just following orders."

She pouted. "It's not fair. I have the right to know. I waited long enough. I wanted to hold on to Caden's promise, but I felt like I was being abandoned."

"Hey. Don't say that. I hate keeping a secret from you. But you know Dad would scold me, right?"

She nodded. Lucas was just following orders and she didn't want her brother to compromise his position with the Wilson Group just because of her. And she also wanted to know everything from Caden himself, not from other people.

But still, she couldn't forget Caroline's expression. Her eyes showed loneliness and she was in pain. She looked broken. Like her, maybe Caroline was also waiting for something or someone.

They arrived at Queen's right before dinner. Alora, their mother, was in the living room waiting for them.

Alira tried her best to smile at her mother and kissed her on the cheek. She sat on the sofa across from the woman who had silver hair and grey eyes.

Her mother who never had an expression in her eyes was quietly looking at a fashion magazine. At the age of thirty-six, she was still as sophisticated and as beautiful as she was in high school.

Alira stared at her mother and smiled genuinely. She was happy to see her like there was nothing wrong with her. The Wilson matriarch was diagnosed with a dissociative identity disorder or known to everyone as multiple personality disorder.

"How's your day, mom?" She asked.

"Everything's fine." Her mother simply answered.

She smiled again and stood up to get closer to her. She hugged her, making her mom frown.

"Do you need anything?"

"Nothing. I just missed you." She said.

"Why? Is Camila with you this morning?" Her mom asked.

She giggled. "No. It's Angel."

Her mother had a lot of identities inside her. She would switch from one personality to another without a warning. Angel was one of them—her younger self.

"Did she ask you to play with her again?"

She nodded. "Don't worry. She was happy."

Her mother had no memory of her identities when she switched. Lucas and her had to deal with their mom's different behaviors at an early age and were already used to it by now.

During dinner, she didn't ask her parents about Caden and his family. She felt like her parents were also keeping something from her. But she knew it wasn't the right time to ask about it.

She went to her room, took a quick shower, and prepared herself for bed. She wanted to rest early, but she couldn't. She was still thinking about Caden.

She remembered the first time they met. He was so cute with his blonde hair and grey eyes. When they were introduced to each other, he had a very innocent response.

"I-I'm Caden! You're pretty like your mother. I'll marry you someday!" He blurted.

Everyone was surprised and laughed at Caden's words. And she had a crazy reply to Caden.

"Alira, you should greet Caden." Her mother said.

She walked closer to Caden. Then she stared at him, then smirked.

"I'm Alira. If you want to marry me then you have to be my slave from now on."

She sighed. They were so young and she now knew how crazy it was to get engaged at six years old. But back then, she wanted to be with Caden, and now that she's already eighteen, she still wanted to be with him.

She turned to her phone and check if Caden sent a text or an email. But still nothing.

"It's been more than two years since his emails stopped coming. I want to wait for you, Caden. But I can't wait if I don't know anything.

She knew what was in her heart years ago. She was in love with him. It may sound funny to fall in love with a boy she met when she was six and heard nothing of him for the last two years. But that was what she felt toward him. That was the reason she couldn't forget and move on. She was still holding on to his promise.

But maybe everything had to end. She had enough. She would just have to force herself to forget him. And if Caden would show up, she would just break up with him.
