Chapter 2: INTRODUCTION

A long time ago, wars kept happening. Men, women, and their children were brutally murdered by the attack from stronger nations.

Year after year, tears remained on the faces of the people and fear lingered in their minds.

They starved but all they cared about was finding new places to hide hoping for the war to end or perhaps for their attackers to get tired of attacking.

The people begged and prayed to the gods of their ancestors day and night to save them and give them back what was lost but even after eighty-seven years, nothing happened, and no miracle was seen until the advent of the new king, King Bajju the sixth who decided to look for a permanent solution to the misery of his people.

He went in search of the Izagi (the spirit whisperers).

The spirit whisperers were known to have powerful divinity and could speak directly to the gods of their ancestors.

They could only be found in the evil forest (Saro) and whoever dared to walk in would never come back alive but the king was determined so he attempted.

Lost in the forest, the king was tired, broken, and feeling despaired. He looked haggard and his clothes were worn out, he was hungry and thirsty but there was absolutely nothing he could find in the forest to eat.

He has also been forewarned not to eat or drink anything in the evil forest for whoever does will continue to dine with the spirits of the forest never to return home.

He sat down and suddenly, he heard music from the distance. The music didn't have words but just the sound of it brought some peace and relief to his weary soul.

Little flying creatures came out of nowhere, They were like ants but much bigger than ants and they carried on their hands banana leaves with different foods on them.

He wasn't scared of seeing them because he had been seeing lots of strange things since he started his journey in the evil forest but he wondered how those tiny creatures could carry so much food and possess such clear and amazing singing voices.

When they came closer to him and were setting down the food while singing, he now saw how they looked. Their eyes were like that of humans but shark-shaped and their ears were long, they were pointing to the sky. Their hair was short but gummed firmly to their tiny round heads.

"No, I shall not eat anything in this forest. They are trying to tempt me with mouthwatering food I have not eaten for a long time but I will not allow myself to be tempted." The king spoke out loud, he placed his hands on his face and covered it tightly, he didn't want to look at the food or even the creatures.

"What is this, my child? We are trying to feed you and you are refusing us." Said a shaky old voice.

The king took his hands off his face and looked at the person in front of him.

It was an old woman with long white hair, she looked like the creatures that brought food but only that she was bigger and human size.

"Who are you?" The king asked shivering. They didn't look scary but there was something about them that put fear in him.

"Your worst nightmare." Said one of the strange creatures, this one had black hair and didn't look as old and wrinkled as the one who spoke first.

"Stop it Agu." The older one cautioned and she kept quiet.

A she, the creatures all looked like females.

"You ask who we are. We are the Izagi, the spirit whisperers, and the protector of all the forces in this evil forest." The older one replied to the king's question.

"So who are you?" Asked another to the king.

"I am King Bajju the sixth of Kugama Kingdom and I have come to the evil forest to seek a favor from the spirit wisperers for my people and my kingdom."

"We didn't inquire about your reason for being here." Agu, the spirit wisperers who seemed displeased with the king said in anger.

"Agu please, enough of that." The older one who seemed to be their leader cautioned her again, this time sternly.

"No man has ever survived the evil forest before and yet you have managed to spend three days without dying. That is very brave of you." The leader spoke with so much calmness.

"Come with us." She said to the king who just sat down looking at them with no more fear but admiration for them.

"Where?" The king stutter.

"Where you will be killed," Agu said with a smirk and the king swallowed hard.

"Let's go." The leader said after strangely looking at Agu.

The king nodded and went with them. After a little while of walking, they came to an enclosed cave and the leader went in first. The king went in after her and so did the rest.

"As you must have guessed, I am the leader of the spirit whisperers and my name is Kadu. Now tell us what you want us to do for you."

The king narrated the ordeal he and his entire kingdom had to face for several years.

The constant attacks they kept receiving, the bloodshed and cries of mothers for their children, and the continuous death of their strongest warriors.

The pain, the misery, his despair, and that of the previous kings.

"I need the spirit whisperers to please help us summon the gods and plead with them on our behalf to save us from our attackers. Please help us, great spirits wisperers." The king pleaded with a sorrowful voice and went on his knees before the Izagi.

"Stand up, great king." Said Kadu, the leader of the spirit whisperers.

"Even the gods of your ancestors have heard your plea. They see your sincerity and the pain you feel for your people. Only a great king can take such a risk to venture into the Saro for its kingdom without fearing what he could encounter and at the expense of his own life. You are truly a great king."
