Chapter 2: Demeter

"O Universal mother, Demeter fam'd august, the source of wealth, and various nam'd:

Great nurse, all-bounteous, blessed and divine, who joy'st in peace, to nourish corn is thine:

Goddess of seed, of fruits abundant, fair, harvest and threshing, are thy constant care;

Who dwell'st in Eleusina's seats retir'd, lovely, delightful queen, by all desir'd.

Nurse of all mortals, whose benignant mind, first ploughing oxen to the yoke confin'd;

And gave to men, what nature's wants require, with plenteous means of bliss which all desire.

In verdure flourishing in honour bright, assessor of great Dionysus, bearing light:

Rejoicing in the reapers sickles, kind, whose nature lucid, earthly, pure, we find.

Prolific, venerable, Nurse divine, thy daughter loving, holy Persephone:

A car with dragons yok'd, 'tis thine to guide, and orgies singing round thy throne to ride:

Only-begotten, much-producing queen, all flowers are thine and fruits of lovely green.

Bright Goddess, come, with Summer's rich increase swelling and pregnant, leading smiling Peace;

Come, with fair Concord and imperial Health, and join with these a needful store of wealth."

-Orphic Hymn to Demeter Eleusinia

---------------------

It has been almost a year since the birth of Hestia. Kronos had been very busy with both being a father and a king.

As the King of a pantheon of Euvrune, he had to go to the biannual meeting of the Euvrune godheads. There were very few things announced only the birth of his daughter, the end of the century-long Aesir-Vanir War and the announcement of Odin and Frigg's marriage.

He had spent as much time as he could with his wife and daughter. They were his driving force in this life. This body came with all the memories and feelings of the original Kronos, and even then, he came to fall in love with Rhea all on his own. Her dark curly hair was soft to the touch, and he'd get lost for what felt like hours in her eyes as it reminded him of the days when they were young and they'd run throughout all of Hellas. Just thinking about her got Kronos to smile.

He got up off the throne and slowly trudged towards the door. As he opened, it the guards outside flashed a smile and wished him a good evening. Kronos flashed back a smile and made his way towards his room.

When Kronos first started acting friendly with his guards and attendants, they were all utterly frightened. It took a month for them to get comfortable with the king's new behaviour and enjoy a friendly relationship with him.

Rhea was once again pregnant, and Kronos made sure to give her as much attention as he could. He tried to supply her with everything she needed or wanted.

As he slowly opened the door to his room, he saw his beautiful queen sleeping with his little princess asleep in her arms. To Kronos, they were the most precious thing in the cosmos and all the children he'll have will be just as precious.

He slowly and quietly made his way towards the kline and moved a strand of Rhea's hair away from her eyes before slowly lying down on the kline trying to go to the realm of Hypnos.

Kronos was abruptly shaken out of his sleep and saw an attendant trying to help Rhea. Rhea was giving birth, and she was recklessly shaking him. His eyes scanned the entire room, looking for his daughter. In the back of his mind, he realised that his niece Leto was in the room, but that wasn't really important to him at the moment. Hestia wasn't in her cradle and he jumped up the moment he saw that his daughter wasn't there. He immediately shouted a question to the attendant.

"Eranos, where is my daughter!"

"My liege, she's safely in the room you built for her when she becomes older."

As Kronos heard that he slightly calmed down before immediately turning his attention to his wife. She looked terrible and in pain the moment he saw her, he could tell exactly what was happening to her. She looked the same way mortals do when having an allergic reaction to wheat. He paused for a second at his own thoughts, calling humans, mortals. Composing himself, he immediately grabbed her hand, which was looking for something to grab hold of. She squeezed with such power that it almost hurt him.

The pain Rhea felt was terrible. When she had started giving birth to Hestia, it felt as if a fire was burning her up yet at the same time it felt comforting, as if trying to ease the pain the longer the process. This time her skin was full of hives and rash and her skin was swelling and she wanted to itch her skin until it bled. She could barely hear her niece in the background, trying to ease her pain and telling her to push.

As the hours passed and she continued to try to push her baby out of her. She started to feel energised and as if she and her husband were walking through a farm from field to field and she was holding her husband's hand, smiling and laughing.

She was close to being finished. Her motherhood divinity was telling her that it wouldn't be long before her daughter was born. She looked to her right and saw her husband half asleep. She could tell he was trying to stay awake just for her and she loved him for that.

In the past, Rhea never thought that she'd ever say she loved her husband again. The moment she got pregnant, he changed from a loving husband to a cold, and angry person. He became a tyrannical king and would always threaten her and the baby. She felt that he still had a heart in him. He never hit her or hurt her physically in any way, so that gave her hope. That hope made her accept the change that happened to him. On that day of Hestia's birth, it was like he was his old self, kind, happy, sweet, and so many more good things.

She pushed one last time, and she felt all the pressure dissipate. There was still pain, and she was still stressed about if her baby was alright. As she looked down, she saw Leto holding her daughter extending her towards Kronos. Kronos looked at her and gave their daughter to her.

Her daughter reminded her of her mother; Gaea. She had blond hair reminiscent of ripe wheat, and her right eye was leaf-green and her left eye bark brown. Her face looked almost perfectly like Gaea's face. From one look at her daughter, Rhea knew that she'd be a lovely mother.

"She looks like our mother, doesn't she?" Kronos boomed

"She really does, so I have the perfect name for her."

"Oh, and what is that?" Kronos questioned

"Demeter, that shall be her name." Rhea answered.

"What a beautiful name for a beautiful baby."

"It really is Auntie." Leto spoke

Kronos looked at Demeter and spoke in a soft tone.

"Hello, my little princess. Your name is Demeter."

As Demeter heard her name, she smiled at her parents. The following day, after Rhea was rejuvenated, they had a celebration just as amazing as the last one for the birth of the second princess.
