Chapter 17: the Adventurers Guild

Akabaru handed a couple of silver coins over to the barman as thanks for his information and left to get back to the barracks at wait for daybreak, when he and Gazef would leave.

-

Adventurers.

Akabaru knew that Ainz once dreamed about that profession.

People who chased after the unknown and had adventures in various parts of the world. Some people considered that adventurers were a physical manifestation of the right way to play YGGDRASIL, but seeing them for himself and listening to Gazef explain the job, Akabaru felt that is was a more realistic view of the world.

Simply put, adventurers were "anti-monster mercenaries."

Akabaru considered this world in some aspects the same to his last as this world is just like the last, it is kill or be killed, there is only place for exploration when the world is not dangerous.

Every monster possessed different special abilities, so they could only be taken care of by people who knew more tricks than average soldiers.

Just going by that point, one might think that they were heroes who were loved and relied on by the common man, like in games.

However, the reality was somewhat different from that.

This was because the ruling authorities did not smile on the existence of armed groups which they could not control. Therefore, aside from the prices they commanded, adventurers did not have much status.

Another reason why adventurers were not accepted on a national scale was because of the same thinking which made companies look for cheap, local temps than employing expensive permanent staff. Thus, much like how temps were treated by companies who could get by without hiring them, adventurers were held in lower regard in those nations which could eliminate monsters with their own military power.

According to the to what Akabaru heard, there were no adventurers in the Slaine Theocracy, while life had gotten worse for adventurers in the Baharuth Empire after the ascension of their new Emperor.

It was a common thing in life to find that a job which one admired was hardly as glamorous in reality.

Akabaru didn't really want to be an adventurer… He liked the exploration and the fights but murdering a whole race for how they weren't human would go to far.. the thing was that he had seen some of the rewards promised on the job board.

While he couldn't read he certainly could see the zero's adding up at the end of a digit. He thought they could always smelt the YGGDRASIL coins to sell them as bars of gold but Ainz didn't like that plan, as he was a avid collector and holder of many items he didn't want to get rid off. Therefore, Akabaru had to get his money himself and robbing those eight fingers seemed to be the quickest non-illegal was… it was illegal but who would report ill earned money as stolen, they would have to be stupid to out themselves like that.

Akabaru still had a plan to sell off the swords taken from the Slaine Theocracy troops pretending to be knights... but before he could sell them he would need a place where he could sell them.

-

Akabaru was almost at the capital of the kingdom, he didn't know if the roads would be better in the capital or if they would still be made from dirt.

Arriving at the gate they were immediately let through able to move on a somewhat usable road until they arrived to the central road, as it was in the area of the upper class and thus readily maintained. The houses that were lined up side-by-side were described to be large and magnificent, radiating a feeling of wealth.

Moving through the streets while the sun was setting not many people could be seen, as only the guards and some gardeners would be out at this time.

Gazef leaded him further into the city until he stopped before the gate leading to the castle where he asked if I would like to enter with him and wait inside of the castle to let Gazef finish his report to his king before he could guide Akabaru through the city.

"How long will I need to wait?"

Gazef looked at the sun and guessed

"He should be ready with eating within the hour.. and there will not be any reports to go through after his meal so I should be ready before nightfall.."

"That's manageable.. I will accompany you to the castle but I will hold of on meeting the king."

"That's fine.. if he asks for you, I will inform him that you're tired and will come another time when you are in the castle.."

"Thank you Gazef-dono."

-

Akabaru was in the waiting room when a two women entered the waiting room and sat down on the opposite chairs. They were discussing something when they entered but were currently silently looking at Akabaru

"Do you need something?"

"…No.. its just I don't seem to recognise you."

"And why would you recognise me.. to my knowledge we haven't met.."

"Well for you to be waiting in this room it must be that you're waiting for one of the royals… and not just anybody can meet with the royal family.."

"… so why would you know everyone that is meeting with the royal family?"

Akabaru looked down upon the woman, taking advantage of his length

"As a Nobel I know almost all the noteworthy Nobels.. and as a adventurer I know the some of the most powerful people in the surrounding nations and looking at your aura you certainly seem like someone strong.."

Akabaru couldn't help but laugh

"Hahaha… great deduction skills, but pointless.."

"Why would it be pointless..?"

"Because you could have just asked…"

This time the girl at the woman's side let out a small laugh.

"Tina…fine let me introduce myself.. I am Lakyus Alvein Dale Aindra and this is my companion Tina…"

"You can just revere to me as Faer.."

"So Faer… where do you come from?"

"I come from the everywhere and nowhere at the same time… I carry my home with me, as it protects me from any danger I may face and can always return to my dead friend… what would you call that?"

"You know that doesn't answer my question?"

"But it did I even gave you more than you asked for.."

Lakyus was about to respond but before she could two people entered the room. One being the warrior captain Gazef and the other being a small girl with long golden hair flowing down on her back..

"Lakyus… Tina you two must be here to see princess Renner.."

"Yes but Gazef.. who is this man?"

"He is a friend that I met when I was hunting the enemy soldiers in the border region."

"So who is he?"

"Faer-dono is a traveller looking to meet up with one of his companions in the capital.."

"I am still here.. you know?"

"You do know he matches the description of one of the six arms right?"

"Mhh now that you say that…"

Akabaru felt indignant at them ignoring him, he didn't even know these six arms but apparently he looked like one. So he turned to the one that was currently not in conversation.. the princess

"So you must be Renner.. the golden princess… from some people I hear that you are the best royal?"

"You flatter me Faer-san, but I wouldn't say that before one of my brothers.."

Akabaru couldn't help but chuckle

"They don't see themselves as a failed product do they?"

With that remark the room fell silent.. everyone looked at Akabaru as he in turn focused on Renner.

"Certainly you jest Faer-dono.. if the crown prince would hear of this he would want to take your head?"

Gazef tried to remedy the situation by suggesting that Akabaru's words were only a joke but everyone knew that even if it was a joke.. that kind of joke would make heads fly.

"Gazef.. you sure it was a good idea to bring him into the castle?" Lakyus asked

"Well… we should get you to the adventurers guild Faer, we wouldn't want to wait now do we..?"

Akabaru was still looking into Renner's eyes suddenly beginning to smile and asked

"Princess if I were to grant you one wish.. what would it be?"

"For peace in the kingdom until the kingdom falls.."

She replied not moving from her spot

Akabaru began to laugh aloud…

"Well princess.. if you ever intend to use that wish that you can find me.."

Akabaru left the room as not a sound was made until he exited

"Gazef! Why are you bringing along crazy people?"

"I would never say someone is crazy Lakyus, he was just eccentric that's all.."

"Thank you princess Renner I will watch out for him more next time."

"Yes please do.. now Lakyus, Tina lets go to my room to get some thee…"

-

Akabaru felt something strange when he spoke to the princess like she was fake… or just imitating so he decided to ask her for a wish, fully intent to see if she was true to her words or just spouting something.

As it turned out, princess Renner was a complete sociopath, seeming to manipulate and misguide people around her, to make her seem like the perfect person.. but Akabaru knew that no one was that nice certainly if they grew up in that kind of environment.

on the way to the Guilt Gazef asked the important question;

"What was that all about?"

"I was just checking who she was, and how she reacts to people.. from what I have heard her hard is of gold stronger than the kingdom itself.."

"Where did you hear that?"

"Some drunk guy at a bar in E-Pespel or someone else I met in that bar.."

"please just don't do that again?"

"just for you I promise on my name.."

--

Entering through the doors Akabaru saw the candles light giving the guild a nice yet gloomy look. Walking to the reception he spotted, being the only attendant still working from the normal two that he expected.

"Excuse me.. I am just looking to get registered so that I can make some money.."

"Of course sir.. we will just be needing a down payment for the paperwork required so if you wouldn't mind and pay the five coppers."

Akabaru placed the five coppers on the counter leaving himself with only a little left in his pouch…

"ohh before you start I got these two letters one from the warrior captain standing beside me and the other from the guild leader in E-Rantel."

As she opened the first parchment the girl was a little surprised but noted something down on the registration form, after opening the first she opened the second have way through she looked shocked and stood up.

"No, it is just… let me get the guild leader."

Saying that she leaves to go upstairs.
