Chapter 38: Love Birds
She doesn't want to think about Ben, but can't help it and she reaches under her pillow and takes out the photo she took with Ben that day at the amusement park. Kim thought of tearing off the photo, the more she looked at it the more it hurt.
Her phone beeped, and she took it. It was a message from Henry.
'Ben is alive'
She quickly sat up and dial Henry's number. "Hello, Henry, I saw your message."
"Kim, how are you?"
"What do you mean Ben is alive?"
Henry went silent for a while. "You know since he's gone I've been the one managing the company. He told me the day he travelled to save you. He said if I didn't come back, I would manage the company for two years. If I don't make it after two years I want Kim to become the CEO of that company. But today I received a package."
"What is it?"
"It's a letter," Henry said
"What's inside?"
"Ben signature, only."
A ring was made on the door. She was startled and rushed out of her bedroom to the living room. She looked through the iDoorcam to know who was at the door. A delivery guy was carrying a box. She opens the door.
"Miss Kim Wilford?" He asked.
"Yes."
"You have a package from an Anonymous person. Please sign this paper."
She read the sheet of paper and signed on it. He hands over the box to her. "Thank you." She said and closed the door.
Kim quickly put the box on the table and flipped it open. There was a pink Gucci bag inside, she took it and checked it, it was shining. Something tells her to look inside so she opens the bag and sees a brown envelope.
She sighed and removed the envelope and brought out a sheet of paper. She flipped it open.
'9: o'clock at the train station.'
She looked up from the paper and said. "Ben."
The snow was blowing hard, she huffed and readjust her sweater and neckerchief. The train stopped and people trooped out of the train one after the other. She waited till the train was loaded off and didn't see anyone resembling Ben. Soon the station was empty as people went to their various destinations.
She took a deep breath to steady herself and got up from the bench. It was always the same waiting for all-day and he wouldn't show up. Kim starts walking out of the station platform.
"Kim." A calm voice spoke.
Kim stood frozen in her spot. That voice seems familiar, she has heard it before. Slowly she turned and gasped in surprise.
Ben was standing there all clear and shiny. They stood face to face as the snow continued falling on them. She couldn't believe her eyes, perhaps it was a dream or imagination, but she didn't know which one to believe. All these years he has gone. Something has changed, the style of hair, he was on low-cut hair and didn't age a bit.
Without another thought, Kim ran toward him and stopped close to him. She looked up and he was gazing down at her, her heart started to beat faster again.
"Ben is that you?" She asked as tears formed in her eyes.
"Yes, Kim," Ben said.
She starts touching him, thinking he was unreal. "Are you real?" She touched his face, his chest.
Ben held her hand, she gasped"You're real." Her eyes widened.
"Yes, I'm real."
She tiptoes and takes his cold face, then lean closer and kisses him gently on his cold lips. Their heart was beating fast and nothing else mattered, not the snow, not the people passing by.
She pulled away from him and turned her back to show a sign she was angry at him. "I thought you were dead." She snobs a little.
"I'm sorry Kim." He hugged her from the back. "I'm so sorry for keeping you waiting."
They both sat on the bench. Kim placed her head on his shoulder. "Where have you been?" She asked.
Ben took a deep breath. "A man found me and saved me." He said.
"Why didn't you come back?"
"I'm sorry, it ain't easy for me too. I didn't wish to abandon you. I went to Australia." He said. "I went for a brain surgery."
She pulled her head off to look at him. "Really?"
"Yes. The surgery was successful, but…"
"But what?" She asked curiously.
"I was in a coma for a year." He uttered.
Kim gasped and covered her mouth with her palm. Tears start to flow out from her eyes like a river. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry that you have to go through all that alone." She weeps.
Ben pulled her close to his arm. "It's okay, all is well now." He said but couldn't hold his tears too.
"You've gone through a lot, who knows what you're facing all these years battling for your life. I'm sorry." She buried her face in her chest sobbing.
"I'm back now, everything is fine." He said as tears dropped from his eyes.
Henry was standing in the distance watching them. He took out his handkerchief and wiped off the tears on his face, before walking towards Ben. Ben looked up and saw him.
"Sir, the car is here," Henry said.
"Thank you, Henry," Ben said.
He nodded his head. "Grandpa wants to see you."
"Okay," Ben said.

Ben was standing beside the hospital bed, where Granpa Jeff was lying down while using oxygen to breathe. Kim was sitting outside the hall.
"I'm here, Grandpa," Ben said.
"You're finally here." Grandpa coughed. "I'm glad you're doing very well."
"You have something to tell me?"
"Yes. I don't have much time left, Ben." He said. Ben sat on the chair and held his hand. " You're the only one I've and I could rely on. I know our family has done you wrong. I want you to forgive her brother and especially your father."
