Finally, after moons of negotiation, we had managed to make Doran martell see reason and decide to surrender his support with the Targaryens, although it was not at all easy, when he discovered that he would have to give up a lot of land as far as the torentine river, the negotiations almost broke down.
But the Prussian knights had weighed down the Dornish defenses at the prince's pass and were threatening a full invasion of Dorne,that was when Doran understood that the conditions were quite good considering his increasingly desperate situation.
This formally ended the rebellion we had led and no one could say that Robert was not the rightful king of the seven kingdoms, we had won although to our misfortune, the Targaryens escaped to essos, all those who supported them were defeated and we still had our card up our sleeve, the Prussians and their great army.
The capital was in chaos after the Prussians left, there were some celebrations that the foreign conquerors left, but with it thousands of craftsmen had disappeared from the city, the steel street was deserted, also with the shoemakers, the leather tanners, the dyers, the arrow makers and carpenters among what we know the Prussians took them as prisoners and would make them work until they paid for having helped the mad king.
That was our cost for ruining Lord Hohenzollern's plan, but the benefits were greater than what we lost in the city, soon more craftsmen would replace what was lost in the capital, but the alliance with the Lannisters was worth it.
We had secured one of the greatest alliances we had seen in a long time, the north and the vale united by the river lands and the Tully marriage, the BaratheonS and the Lannisters uniting the royal house with the richest house of the seven kingdoms, forming a united block against any attempt at a Targaryen comeback.
More than half the territories support Robert, while the Prussians swore allegiance to us through their lord/king and if what they say is true, there is no Prussian who has not broken their word much like the Stark's only leaving Dorne and the Iron Islands as pieces that could support the exiled Targaryens in Essos.
The gold the Prussians had lent us plus the gold we had obtained for breaking the Prussians/Lannister engagement plus the dowry lord Tywin gave us had left our coffers full, the horrible fear I felt when I saw our coffers empty was now just a dread that had long ago left me.
My problem now was no less than Robert himself, at first, Robert showed much interest in ruling and showed up to several small council meetings, but he showed up less and less to them and on many occasions when the townsfolk needed audiences with the king they were postponed for a long time because Robert was bored with hearing all the time about peasants fighting over pigs, merchants accusing nobles for not paying for food or jewels or squabbling between nobles over some farm or mill.
Robert showed less and less interest in ruling, but made use of the royal treasury all the time, arriving drunk at meetings or sleeping with maidservants to the chagrin of his new queen, but Robert had no shame in that because on several occasions he had disappeared on Silk Street.
I began to rub my head thinking about how to get Robert interested in his labors again, but someone entered my workroom.
''Lord Hand, may I have a few words with you?'', said Lord Varys with his characteristic calm tone of voice.
''Of course lord Varys, do we have any new information that would be of interest to me?'', I replied to the master of whispers
''Yes, I have done the work you requested Lord Arryn, apparently the Targaryen survivors decided to settle in Bravos, but so far, that is all I know, I will need more time for my little birds to send more songs regarding the sons of Rhaegar and the mad king'' Varys said showing me a piece of parchment with the information.
''Well, at least we know where to look, we must keep an eye out for their movements, regarding our friends the Prussians have you been able to discover anything?'', I said staring at lord Varys
''Well as is known the harvest of the first moon of this year was very abundant, thousands of merchants have already begun to distribute throughout the territories carrying all kinds of grains to supply the areas that were badly affected by the war, so the Prussians have kept their word in maintaining the grain supply of the kingdom, only that the price is quite high, although understandable due to the loss of so many crops by the war'' said Varys looking through his sleeves for more pieces of parchment.
''About the rebels, that interests me more how is that matter going?'', I asked Varys.
''about what is going on internally in their territory is not known to me, it seems the Prussians know very well who is a spy or not because my little birds live very little when they come to set up their nest in the reach and the information that reaches me is scarce''
''But my lord hand, I can say with great certainty, that the Prussians have crushed the rebellion in tumbleton, the city has never had such low levels of crime in fact, it has been over a moon since the last crime was reported in the city so that something happening there prevents crime, but it seems very unnatural'' said Varys as he thought
''In other areas the Prussians have been seen to act with a cruelty that would make Maegor look like a kind king, with rebels attacking Prussian supply lines, but there are many complaints from merchants in essos that the Prussians mete out monstrous punishments to their merchants for finding ''forbidden goods'' and ask that we do something about it'' Varys said opening his eyes
''What kind of punishments?'', I asked Varys.
''A bit of everything, hanging for common crimes, crucifixion for serious crimes, like our Essos friends and for something extreme, some of Lord Hohenzollern's men know how to pierce a man with a sharp stick until it comes out of his mouth and he stays alive... for days, then castrate him and put the necklace balls on him while leaving him in public view'' Varys said a bit uncomfortably
''By the seven, how is it possible that people tolerate so much cruelty'' I said surprised
''Ha, ha, that's the funny thing my lord hand about all this, the small folks consider it to be quite fair, the Prussians set up a new system of justice that the common folk love for its speed and consider it to be just and at the same time it punishes the guilty harshly and gives plenty of opportunity to defend themselves against accusations... and well, those forbidden goods the Prussians capture is not another word for slaves'' Varys said laughing a bit
"Really?, they are complaining about that, what do they expect to happen if they try to sell slaves here, slavery was banned hundreds of years ago" I said annoyed.
''Well casually you simply fine the merchant and free the slaves, the Prussians punish all captains and sailors with crucifixion and impalement, plus they feel the Prussians are extremely meticulous with their goods because they are from essos'' Varys shrugged his shoulders
''I will see what I can do with lord Hohenzollern with the punishments they are too cruel, but neither can you expect them to welcome them with open arms as they bring slaves to the seven kingdoms''I said as I thought of what to tell our Prussian friend.
''That's good to know lord hand'' Varys said giving a smile that might be a smile
''About lord Tywin what happened to him'', I asked before Varys withdrew.
''Well, his departure from the capital was chaotic, Lord Hand, it seems Lord Tywin could not convince the High Septon why Jaime Lannister should break his vows with the King's guard, it may not show on his face, but Lord Tywin was furious,'' Varys said.
''What?, but if the high septon agreed to lift Jaime's vows when the Prussians were asking him to, why now he change his mind so drastically about it?'', I said surprised.
''That's what I'm figuring out, I don't understand why the high septon was so friendly with the Prussians, since he rejected all of the lord Tywin's attempts and kept the donation that house Lannister made to the faith in the hope that they would lift his son's vows and soon after he left the capital to return home, since we didn't give him any seats in the small council'' Varys said in his calm voice
''Yes very suspicious you should investigate, something must have happened for the septon to be so subservient to the Prussians'' I said to Varys.
''So shall it be done Lord Hand'' Varys replied.
Varys was just starting to leave my room when he turned around.
''Ah... by the way, my lord Arryn, Robert, wants us to hold a great hunt in the royal forest, so he asked you to organize everything and to invite some of the local lords to accompany him in hunting in the forest'' Varys said smiling at me
I covered my eyes and sighed
'If Robert keeps spending like this we will soon have to ask for another loan from lord Tywin or worse from Maximilian, that man never stops talking, and the worst thing is that he can talk for an hour and not say anything'.
''Well, I'll take care of it, he'll specify which lords he wants to invite?'' I said a little defeated.
''He said he would like it very much if you could get Charles to come to the hunt'' Varys said.
''That knight only leaves his lord when he is ordered to do so, it will be impossible to bring him'' I answered.
''Then I think you will have to give an excuse to our king, well, if you excuse me, I must investigate further what happened with the faith, it could be very dangerous if something like that happens again'' said Varys leaving the room.
''Well, we must send out the invitations, I suppose'' I said to the air, knowing that no one would hear me.
