Chapter 44: Chapter 44

Remy gently placed Jeanne on top of the cloth that served as an improvised bed for them. He lay down and nestled her in his arms, feeling the warmth of her body as she snuggled against his chest. He thought that perhaps she could be more comfortable there than on the ground, even though the bed was just a piece of cloth.

Although Jeanne was dirty and smelled strongly of iron all over her body, Remy didn't mind. He ran his hand through her hair, feeling the strands slip between his fingers. Gradually, fatigue enveloped him, and his eyelids began to feel heavy, almost closing his eyes.

Suddenly, something made him wake up. Crec-crec. Remy shifted on the cloth he was lying on, but the noise continued. He slowly opened his eyes and looked at Jeanne, who was no longer on his chest. Now she was squatting in front of him, with her back turned. Her hair covered her face, preventing him from seeing exactly what she was doing. However, something told him that she was moving something on the ground.

"Come and sleep, will you? It's still early," Remy called out, wishing she would lie down with him again.

"Not now... I'm dealing with something here," replied Jeanne, without stopping what she was doing.

Crec-crec.

The sound of something scraping on the ground returned, making Remy irritated. He tried to ignore the noise and concentrate on sleeping, but it was impossible. With each crec-crec, his irritation grew.

"It's hard to sleep with this noise," he said, getting up from the cloth he was lying on. He looked at Jeanne, who was still squatting on the ground.

"What are you doing?" he asked as he walked over to Jeanne, who was squatting, carefully examining a map drawn on the ground.

"You did this? It looks incredibly realistic!" Remy was surprised and speechless. The map that Jeanne drew was surprisingly detailed, even though it was drawn on the ground with a branch. The area of the camp they were in was very well represented, with most of the roads and fortifications drawn with extreme precision.

"Thank you, this will help me a lot. I realized my mistake," said Jeanne, with a sad tone in her voice as she remembered the death of her soldiers. Now she was determined to be more strategic and meticulous in her plans, aiming to minimize any possible loss of lives.

"What are you planning?" asked Remy, eagerly wanting to know more about her plan.

"It's still in the works, but I'd like you to help me with something," Jeanne asked, looking at Remy with seriousness and determination in her eyes.

"What would that be?" asked Remy, curious and ready to contribute his skills to help the cause.

"I want you to train me. I need to get much stronger than I already am. I want to help all my soldiers. God's blessing will help me with that, but I want to be able to help even more," said Jeanne with conviction, her eyes shining with determination.

"If that's what you want, fine. I don't know how I'm going to train you, but I'll do it the same way I do in my training," Remy replied, squatting next to Jeanne. He, too, needed to get back to training because he hadn't used all his strength. In addition, he wanted to be stronger and try something new.

"For me, it's okay," said Jeanne, smiling at Remy. She was afraid he wouldn't accept, but was relieved he was willing to help.

"Was that it? Is there nothing else?" asked Rémy, curious. He had noticed that Jeanne had more to say than just asking for help with training.

"There is actually. I want you to gather all the routes the English are using to supply their soldiers. We need to know what they're up to so we can win," explained Jeanne, looking at Rémy with a bit of guilt for adding more work to his plate.

"Is that all? Don't worry, I can handle it," replied Rémy, tapping his chest confidently. He was willing to do whatever it takes to help Jeanne and her army.

"Thank you, but you won't be going alone," said Jeanne, her eyes trembling for a moment, showing a bit of fear. She didn't want to leave Rémy alone on such an important mission.

"What? Why? I work better alone," retorted Rémy, not liking the idea of having someone else to interfere with his work. He was used to working alone and didn't want anyone else involved.

"You're coming with me," Jeanne had told Rémy, with a hint of anxiety in her voice. He knew he needed to leave soon and was waiting for someone to join him to have more alone time.

"No, you'll go with Gilles and some soldiers," Jeanne replied, with a tone of reluctance in her voice, even though her heart was asking to go with Rémy. She needed to stay and lead her soldiers.

Rémy lowered his head, a little disappointed but didn't complain. "Oh, and don't forget to take a bath before you go," he reminded Jeanne, who was still covered in dirt and dust from the last battle.

"Okay, as soon as I'm done here, I'll take a bath," Jeanne agreed with a gentle smile, picking up the map and the branch she was using in her hand to continue planning her strategies. But she couldn't help feeling a twinge of sadness as she watched him leave without her.

"Okay, the drawing you made looks really nice," Rémy complimented before leaving the tent. The sky was still dark, but the sunlight was beginning to emerge on the horizon, illuminating the camp with a soft glow. Rémy knew that although he was alone now, except for Gilles and some soldiers, his journey would be easier with the memory of Jeanne's smile and dedication to leading her army.

Rémy returned to his tent and picked up the spear that had been his companion for years. Then he left the camp and moved away a bit to begin training. The soldiers on watch noticed the movement, but when they realized it was just Rémy, they went back to their activities.

With his spear in hand, Rémy began training, each movement executed with precision and skill, after all, he had spent years perfecting the art of the spear. Each swing was worked with elegance and lethality, executed with impeccable fluidity.

Even with the darkness still present, Rémy didn't mind, because the sun was about to rise on the horizon. Still, he continued training, as if creating a work of art. Each movement was well done and worked, demonstrating all his talent and dedication in the art of the spear.
