Chapter 14: Heal

With a horrid expression, George and Theresa moved fast towards the unconscious Chris while shouting his name in worry.

Seeing no response, George spoke up in hurry: "Theresa quickly, go bring the medical kit from the kitchen!"

Being brought out of her thoughts, Theresa complied swiftly and brought the medical kit with her still shaking hands.

Laying it down beside the unconscious Chris, George tried to give an encouraging smile whilst saying "Don't worry, Honey. If we take care of this at once we should be able to help him recover in no time. Do you remember our earlier training? I'll take out the spider leg and you use mana with recovery intent whilst cleaning the wound, ok?"

Nodding in assurance, and with a new found optimism she readied herself.

Steading her breath, breathing in long strides, she calmed her self down, though still with a shake in her hands.

They had learnt a lot from Chris these last few days. Fighting, usage of breath, mana control were one of many, and if Theresa could name the most important lesson was the insistent of a calm mind no matter the situation.

However, learning and practising in an organised manner could never truly compare with the real deal.

Still, she reclaimed some of Chris' previous teachings and utilised the breathing techniques to slow down the heartbeat, forcing oneself in to a more relaxed state.

Giving another nod to George indicating her readiness, she held her hands just beside Chris' abdomen.

George also having properly prepared himself quickly pulled the spider leg out of Chris' body bringing with it a lot of crimson blood.

With her hands in position, Theresa poured the cleaning liquid over the wound. Finishing up, she was fast in laying her soft hands on the wound in a gentle manner.

With one hand on the left of Chris' abdomen and the other on his back, George watched as Theresa's hands began to glow with her mana.

With her previous occupation as a nurse, Theresa had some knowledge of biology, giving her a slight edge in her healing abilities.

The more precise the mana intent was in its usage, the more effective it could be.

After a lot of experiments the day before, the three of them had gained a lot of valued information in the usage of mana and how to properly make use of it. The capabilities of healing others as well as oneself was possible, though it was truly taxing.

With their limited mana capacity they could possibly speed the natural process of the bodies self restorative properties.

However, creating and manipulating matter were far out of reach for now.

Huffing and puffing in her strained breaths and with sweat dripping and clinging to her body, Theresa focused with all her might. The minutes were ticking by, but she would not give up until she saw some results and was certain he was out of harms way.

With Chris now having stayed with them for the last four days, still in wait for his company to arrive, she had begun to care for the young man and found herself quite fond of him.

He had been an anchor for the old couple in this unexpected change. They valued him greatly and they were sure if it wasn't for him they would've never had any hope to understand this peculiar situation.

As if his help in training and his knowledge in utilising mana wasn't enough, he had risked his life in pursuit of protecting them all. They surely felt indebted and would repay his care to the best of their abilities.

Seeing the wound slowly start to close and the scalp having begun to cover the outer layer she felt a huge relief and stopped her healing.

She had barely any mana left and she wouldn't be any help if she were to completely drain herself.

Observing his condition she rose her self up after the 30 minute long session and glanced at George who was staring outside in to the night, guarding the duo from whatever new creature might pop up.

"Anything out there, Dear?"

"Hmm..? Ahh, you finished! Wow, nicely done Theresa! I thought I saw something move by the forest, but it's probably just my mind playing tricks on me. No need to worry, let's get the lad up to the bedroom so he can rest shall we?"

Grabbing Chris' body, George brought him over his shoulders in a fireman's carry and began trodding through the kitchen towards the staircase with Theresa following close behind.

Just as he was about to take the first step, the two of them stopped with their face drained of colour when they heard a sound, which was impossible to mistake.

Slowly turning their heads towards the window, they watched with their mouths hung open as a huge spider, at least triple the size of the other previous ones, was dashing towards their location. Its skittering steps loud enough for them to barely hear, but it was a sound they knew all too well and had learned to dread as a result of their previous encounter.

In contrast with the 'smaller spiders' it wasn't obscuring their vision with its mana, nor did it seem to want to be stealthy about its approach.

With its large eight legs it propelled itself forward reaching an incredible speed. Theresa and George watched in horror as it got closer. They could see its sharp, jagged mandibles and eight glowing eyes fixed upon them with the moonlight now shining upon its massive form. With a fierce determination, it ran towards the house, ready to pounce, confident in its superior size and power.
