Volume 2 Chapter 5: The Unknown Figure

This time, Pepper's abrupt suggestion didn't cause any mess; instead, it prevented one from happening.

After a few seconds, Carmilla suddenly emerged out from the opening along with the glowing orb at such speed that if she collided with either Eve or Pepper, or both, it would cause a lot of damage to them.

Carmilla's momentum was enough to slide her several meters away from the opening before she came to a stop, about a quarter of the way across the room.

But the light orb continued to roll until it reached the other side of the room. It seems to have stopped following Carmilla after she reached the bottom.

================================

Carmilla started to rub her sides since they hurt quite badly from her body colliding with the edges at every turn she took.

Frequent collisions slowed her down considerably; otherwise, she would have reached her destination much quicker.

She stands up, rubs her sides, and looks around the room.

After confirming the absence of any enemies, she finds herself in an empty room with an unoccupied throne at the opposite side of the room.

Suddenly, she poses a question to both Eve and Pepper, who are still in shock from Carmilla's abrupt entrance.

Carmilla: "Why the heck did the stairs turn into a slide out of nowhere?"

Neither of them answered. Instead, Eve pointed at Pepper, who, in turn, was indicating the direction of the opening where the lever she had pulled down was located.

Observing all of this, her intuition loudly suggested that Pepper was somehow involved in the sudden transformation of the staircase into a slide.

Carmilla: "Pepper, what have you done?"

Pepper began to sweat profusely upon hearing Carmilla's chilling tone.

Pepper: "Master, would you believe me if I said I have no idea why I pulled down the lever?"

Upon hearing Pepper's words, Carmilla smiled, though her smile sent a chill down Pepper's spine as she replied.

Carmilla: "Yes, and you should also believe me when I say that I won't kick you just once or a few times so that we can share the pain I suffered while I was sliding downwards."

As Carmilla was about to approach Pepper, the three of them suddenly heard a faint cough, capturing their attention.

Carmilla and Pepper both conjured blood swords and pointed them in the direction of the faint cough.

Meanwhile, Eve created a bow and took aim at the figure seated on the supposedly empty throne.

Since their initial entry into the room, Eve had thoroughly checked it and was confident that it had been empty.

Even after Pepper pulled down the lever, the only change had been the stairs transforming into a slide.

After Carmilla had come to a stop from sliding, she also scanned the room, confirming that there was no one occupying the throne.

Seeing someone unexpectedly seated on the supposed empty throne, without hesitation, Eve fired a probing shot at the sitting figure.

*Swoosh*

The arrow flew straight towards the head of the figure sitting on the throne, but to everyone's surprise, the figure made no attempt to dodge.

The figure simply raised his/her hand when the arrow was near his/her head.

Eve was anticipating a hit, but she suddenly lost her connection with her own arrow.

When it was just a few millimeters away from striking the seated figure.

Instead of the blood arrow falling to the ground and shattering into pieces upon losing control of it.

Instead, it continued to hover near the head of the figure.

The figure made a simple hand gesture, causing the blood arrow to change direction.

Now, the tip of the arrow was aimed directly at Eve, the one who had shot it.

Suddenly, it shot toward Eve, the very person who had released it, and like a laser beam, it darted past her head.

Carmilla, Eve, and Pepper, who were vigilant towards the figure, failed to notice the arrow until they heard a shattering sound from behind them.

Eve, the intended target, felt a slight sting on her cheeks and instinctively placed a hand on her face.

She felt that it was a bit wet, so Eve looked at her fingers to find blood on them. As always, when they were wounded, the wound immediately closed.

The slight stinging sensation faded away and the blood on her cheeks and fingers were being absorbed by her skin, gradually fading away.

Now she appeared perfectly unharmed, although the arrow had only grazed her cheeks, it had still inflicted some damage.

She was certain that if the blood arrow had struck her head, it would have been fatal. Eve attempted to fire another shot but suddenly froze when she heard the figure speak.

???: "If I were you, I would recommend not doing that again. It might not be a graze anymore but rather a direct hit, and I assure you of that."

Following that, the atmosphere around them grew increasingly intense, causing the three of them to remain silent and watch the figure's every move with wariness.

After a few seconds of silence and with the figure simply gazing in their direction without taking any action,

They noticed that the figure's head was concealed by a mask, and the rest of the figure remained shrouded in darkness.

Nevertheless, the three of them were acutely aware that the figure was closely observing them.

They eventually lowered their weapons, as the figure didn't appear to be an enemy, but they remained cautious and didn't dispel their weapons.

Like every time, Pepper was the first one to break the silence and asked the figure.

Pepper: "So, what are you? And who are you?"

???: "Impatient as always, are we? But to answer your questions, I'm like the two of you."

Saying this, the figure pointed at Eve and Pepper, then pointed at itself, before continuing to speak.

???: "And the three of you can think of me as the dungeon master of this dungeon."

Hearing everything the figure had said, which only raised more questions, Carmilla, this time instead of Pepper, was the one to ask the unknown figure.

Carmilla: "What do you mean when you say you're the same as Eve and Pepper?"

Hearing Carmilla's question and realizing that his/her previous statement was somewhat confusing, the figure began to explain.

???: "I'm the same as them, while also not."

Seeing the bewildered expressions on the faces of the three, the unknown figure continued to explain further.
