Chapter 28: Dangerous man

"Heck! What the hell did you want, Rex?" Mei Xing yelled out of frustration, her voice echoing through the empty streets. She was sick and tired of Rex, sticking into her life at every moment like an unwanted shadow. She wondered if he never got drained from the chase, always pursuing her with unwavering determination. "Are you asking me? or don't you know what I need from you." Rex questioned, his words carried on the night breeze, heavy with a tinge of sorrow.

The streetlights cast long shadows as Mei Xing stared at Rex, her eyes blazing with a mix of anger and confusion. His pleading look, filled with unspoken emotions, almost ignited a fiery rage within her. But deep down, beneath the layers of resentment, she couldn't deny the pain she saw in his eyes.

It was a stark contrast to his usual confident and carefree demeanor, like an unspoken secret that burst through the surface. Mei Xing took a deep breath, trying to soothe the tempest raging within her before responding. "Look, Rex," she began, her voice softer, the anger losing its sharp edge, "I just need some space. It feels like you're always there, invading every corner of my life. I can't breathe, I can't think straight." Her words lingered in the air, tinged with a mixture of calmness and a hint of bitterness.

Rex's broad shoulders slumped, the weight of his longing evident as his gaze dropped to the pavement, shrouded in the darkness of the night. "I... I didn't realize it was affecting you this much," he admitted, his voice barely rising above a whisper. "I never meant to make you feel suffocated, Mei Xing. I just... I care about you. More than I should, maybe." His word were but a gentle murmur, as if afraid of shattering the fragile moment.

"I need you, Mei Xing, just believe in me," Rex's voice trembled with a hint of vulnerability, his vulnerability that pierced through Mei Xing's guarded heart. For a fleeting moment, a combination of surprise and flattery danced in her eyes, a contradiction in her emotions. How could she have ever imagined that he needed her? In a world teeming with single ladies, why would he not find solace in their arms?

"Do you really think twice before coming to my house?" Mei Xing's voice echoed with disbelief, as if questioning the very fabric of their connection. Rex, taken aback by her question, furrowed his brows, searching for meaning behind her words.

"What do you mean by that?" Rex demanded, his face filled with a serious intensity that rivaled the dark night engulfing them. "Come Rex!" Mei Xing's voice turned gentle, a beacon of assurance in the uncertainty that surrounded them. With each cautious step, Rex approached her, his heart pounding in sync with the rhythm of the night. Mei Xing reached out and lightly grasped Rex's shoulder, her touch sending a tremor through his core. She pointed up at the vast expanse of the midnight sky, speckled with stars like scattered diamonds against the void.

"Do you see what's up there," Mei Xing asked, her tone laced with a seriousness that commanded Rex's attention. The weight of her question hung heavily between them, as if the answer held the key to deciphering the complexities of their connection. "Of course, yes!" Rex responded, his voice unwavering as he nodded in affirmation, entranced by the depth behind Mei Xing's eyes.

"Then go and kiss the sky," Mei Xing announced with a touch of scorn dancing in her voice, unable to believe that Rex could fall for such a silly, lame joke.

"Stop it, Mei Xing! Don't be silly in response to my confession of love for you!" Rex pleaded, his voice trembled with a mix of hope and anxiety. Mei Xing turned her gaze towards him, her eyes filled with uncertainty. Words failed her, and a silence lingered between them, pregnant with unspoken emotions.

Taking a deep breath, Rex gathered his courage, his heart pounding in his chest. The air became heavy, charged with anticipation. "Please, marry me, Mei Xing. I will give you the happy life you've always wanted," he implored, his voice tinged with a blend of determination and vulnerability. Mei Xing's smile grew cold, betraying a hint of sadness. She lightly tapped his shoulder, her touch almost fleeting, and responded, her voice tinged with a hint of resignation.

"Rex, I am already living the life that I wished for. So, don't..." Mei Xing's words were abruptly cut off as Rex rushed to speak, desperation seeping into his voice.

"Is that truly the happy life you wished for, Mei Xing?" Rex's voice cracked, a mixture of sorrow and disbelief threaded through his words. He couldn't fathom how Mei Xing could be content with the circumstances, denying him the chance to be with her. Mei Xing's response was swift, her discomfort palpable.

"Yes!" Mei Xing replied with an undertone of unease. She maneuvered the delicate balance of her emotions, determined to maintain her composed demeanor, refusing to allow herself to stray from the steady facade she had always presented. The tension between them thickened as Rex raised an eyebrow, unable to accept Mei Xing's claim of happiness as a shared wife.

"So, you're genuinely content as the wife of three brothers?" Rex questioned, his skepticism painted across his face. He couldn't grasp the idea that Mei Xing found fulfillment in being a wife shared among siblings. Mei Xing's response sliced through the air, sharp and forceful.

"Yes, I am happy!" Mei Xing's voice had an edge to it, her words delivered with conviction, though her eyes betrayed the turmoil within. Rex couldn't help but voice his disbelief, his mind unable to reconcile her claims with his understanding of love.

"Hahaha! You must be joking again, right?" Rex sought confirmation, a glimmer of hope mingled with doubt. Mei Xing's reply came swiftly, her tone laced with a hint of graveness.

"I'm not," Mei Xing muttered briskly, her brows furrowing deeply as she spoke. Rex's disbelief bubbled up, bursting forth uncontrollably.

"Then that's a lie!" Rex blurted out, his words a mix of shock and incredulity, though deep down, he doubted the veracity of Mei Xing's statement. The mood between them shifted abruptly, Mei Xing's anger ignited like a flame.

"Rex, you can't keep doing this! I thought we had separated long ago, even since childhood, and now that I am married, you continue to disturb the peace of my marriage," Mei Xing retorted, her anger seeping into each word. She released a long, exasperated breath, trying to regain her composure amidst the rising fury. The sky above seemed to mirror her emotions, dark clouds gathering, ready to unleash a torrential storm.
