Chapter 3: 2

When she was sure the little girl had dozed off to sleep, the woman snuck inside and stood by her bed.

Silently, staring down at her.

She didn't understand how such a beautiful girl could be treated this way. Her mother practically ignored her, and her father talked down about her.

She didn't have any friends. She was forbidden from walking outside the castle without guards.

The woman moved her purple hair out of her face. "Hmm. I was right. They should awaken in the next few days."

Her door was opened, and a middle-aged woman stepped inside. She glared at the woman and closed the door.

"What are you doing here? Get away from her." she lit her hand on fire. "I said get away from her."

The woman didn't even flinch. "I'm not here to do her any harm, Skylar." she waved a hand, and the flame went out. "I'm only doing my job."

"If that job includes ruining people's lives then you're doing a spectacular job." Skylar hissed. "I'm not going to allow it, step away from the child."

"It is her destiny, Skylar. I've seen it. Glimpses." the woman gazed down at the girl. "She will be capable of wonderous things."

Skylar took a step toward the bed. "Don't."

The woman ran her hand down Siarah's face and muttered, "When the moment comes that the mark is revealed, she shall bring the rise of peace."

When she pulled her hand back, Siarah's body started glowing golden colors.

Skylar gasped and jumped toward her. "What-"

The woman flicked her wrist, locking her in place. She was frozen, mouth open, and eyes wide.

"I know you will not forgive me for what I've done, Skylar, but in time you will come to appreciate it." the woman leaned down and kissed Siarah on the forehead. She sent an expression in Skylar's direction. "I must go now."

She waved her hand again, and Skylar unfroze, falling on her face. When she got up to snap at the woman, she was gone.

Siarah woke to find Aunt Skylar sitting on the edge of her bed. She sat up and rubbed the sleepiness from her eyes.

"What is it, Auntie Sky?" Siarah gasped. "Did something happen to my brothers?"

Skylar laughed softly and shook her head. "Of course not. Your mother wants you to come and meet them."

"Oh. Alright. Let me get changed."

When her aunt left the room she opened her closet and pulled down a dress in her favorite color.

Purple.

She slipped a gold belt around her waist and a teal bow in her hair. Then she stepped into her flats and left her room.

Her aunt led her down the long labyrinth hallways until they reached the nurse's room.

Siarah opened the door and saw her mom laying on the bed, holding two baby boys in her arms. She looked up when she entered.

"Hello, Siarah. These are your brothers, Ian and Axel," she said in a flat voice.

Siarah hovered by the door getting the feeling that she wasn't wanted. Her mother turned her attention back to her sons, ignoring her completely.

There was a time when her mother used to do all sorts of things with her. She used to take her on walks, do her hair, sing her to sleep, and read her bedtime stories.

Used to.

She wasn't sure why she stopped or if she would ever start again. Most days she'd sit in her room and cry.

Her aunt stepped into the room and sat down next to Siarah's mother. "Well, are you going to come over?"

Before she could answer, the door opened, and her father stepped into the room. He frowned down at her.

"What are you doing here?"

Siarah scowled. "Visiting my siblings. Is there a problem?"

Her father swept past her. "You're supposed to be in class. Your teacher won't be very happy if you're late, and neither will I."

Siarah looked to her mom for help, but she was staring down at the babies.

"Henry, surely-"Skylar started.

Siarah frowned. "That's not your place, Sky. Siarah, listen to your father."

"I don't see what's wrong with me coming to see my siblings. If you hate me that much, why don't you just say so." Siarah snarled.

Her father snapped. "Siarah, go."

"It's because I'm not a boy isn't it?" Siarah continued, ignoring her father. "You shun me, Father because I don't remind you of yourself. Because I'm a girl. And in your book, girls always amount to nothing."

Without waiting for anyone to respond, Siarah threw open her room door and fled down the hall.
