Chapter 2: Chapter 2 My Mate

As the sun starts setting down, I pace back and forth in the kitchen back in my house, cooking dinner for me and my boyfriend. I know Harry said he would be late but I have a feeling that he would ask for food when he returns. I stir the ladder in the small pot on the stove before glancing at the bandage on my arm. The pain had disappeared a while ago and when I checked earlier, the flesh had sealed close. The ointment had worked well. I have never healed this fast before.

Of course, it is still nothing compared to other wolves. Werewolves are stronger and faster than humans and have heightened senses. In addition, they can heal much quicker and the stronger one’s wolf is, the better he is than other wolves. That is why the Alpha bloodline is superior.

Picking up the bottle of salt, I sprinkle some into the food before stirring it again. Suddenly I hear a wolf howling in the distance and I freeze in fear. The small glass container slips out my hand and smashes on the ground.

Rogue attack!

I turn my head to the kitchen counter before grabbing the phone on the surface. With trembling fingers, I dial in Nadia’s number before Harry’s voice rings in my head. “Claire! Locks all the doors and windows! And stay inside the house!”, he commands through the mind link. Putting the phone away, I force my legs to move as I rush to the door and lock it. I then run to the living room and bedroom to close all the windows and pull the curtains. Yes, if a rogue wanted, he or she can easily break in through the door with their super strength but a burglar too can break into your house, yet you lock it, right?

With all the possible entrances shut close and lights turned off, I stand in the kitchen, holding onto the counter as I struggle to breathe. Every tiny noise outside the house was sending electric shocks through my nerves and I was at the verge of breaking. With my heightened hearing, I could hear some wolves snarling and growling as they fight each other. The sound of some whimpers make me cover my ears.

I look for my phone again, hoping to hear Nadia’s soothing voice. With my wolf being weak, I can’t mind link that far away. Suddenly another wolf howl rings from far away, announcing that the rogues had lost once again and were retreating. I continue to search for  the device, wanting to call Nadia and ask whether she was okay. Failing to find my phone in the kitchen, I was about to step out when I hear a glass break inside the house and I instantly yelp and jump.

The noise definitely came from inside the house. My legs tremble, threatening to give out under me but what could I do? “Harry?? I need you!! There’s someone in the house!!”, I try mind linking him but I fail, making me realize he’s too far from the house and probably wouldn't be returning any time soon. Glancing around me, my brown orbs fall on the blade next to me.

With hesitant steps and a kitchen knife in hand, I slowly make my way to the storeroom where the noise had come from. My heartbeat was louder than the sound of my footsteps and it reminded me of my father’s words. If he could hear my heart, then so can the intruder. With my freezing cold hand firmly placed on the wooden surface, I open the door to the storeroom. The lights in the tiny room were off as usual but the soft wind hitting my nose reminds me of how I had forgotten to shut the window. I look at the windowsill in front of me and the glass still intact. Did I imagine the sound then?

With furrowed brows, I walk over to the window but the door suddenly shuts close behind me, making me yelp and turn around. I’m not alone. Before I could even think of my next move, I’m pinned to the wall behind me by a firm grip on my neck, the blade falling out of my hand. My brown orbs widen at contact and I stare up at the attacker but couldn't see his face in the darkness. My heartbeats blare in my ears, silencing every noise around us. His strong scent of rain mixed with the metallic smell of his blood hits my nostrils. As he brings his face close to mine, his grip tightens on my throat, cutting my air supply short. I could tell he's smirking at the sight of me.

My eyes frantically scan his features hidden by the darkness while tears pool in them. His hand chokes me and my last breath comes out of my quivering lips, “..mate…”

My orbs frantically search for his in the darkness and although I couldn't see it, I could feel them on me. His grip lightly loosens, allowing me a little air but remains there still, keeping me pinned to the wall. My heart continues to beat loud but it wasn't due to fear, it was to see my one and only finally in front of me. The tears in my eyes were from a mixture of unease from the grip and happiness to finally have found him.

Yet that happiness was starting to lightly diminish as he showed no sign of mercy on me. "..mate...", I repeat, this time calling out to him but he doesn't let go. I fail once again to get any response from him. I inhale his intoxicating scent once again, rain, but it's mixed with the metallic smell of his blood. "You...You're hurt...", I meekly speak out.

He lets out a huff before finally speaking, "Tsk tsk, don't think it will give you any advantage over me, critter."

I lightly flinch at the nickname he gave me. "I...I'm not looking for any advantage...", I defend myself.

"Oh really? You are not looking for a chance to pick up the blade and stab me in the heart, hoping it kills me fast enough so I can't strike back.", his words rise a sharp pain in my chest. Just the thought of hurting him made my body revolt.

"I would never...", I whimper.

"And why is that? Why would I trust you?", the rogue's deep voice almost sends a shudder through my body. Even in such a position where I'm at his mercy, I feel at peace. A sensation of belonging. This is where I'm supposed to be, right? Close to him.

"Because...", I try to fixate my eyes where I suspect his orbs to be, "You're my mate..." I desperately look for any sense of recognition spread through him but nothing happens. Another painful squeeze of my chest and I whimper, "Don't you feel it too..?"

In the dark, I see him tilt his head back as he chuckles. It brought warmth to my heart although my brain could sense the tone in it. He looks at me again before leaning closer. My breath hitches at the closeness. "Feel what? The sparks through our skins?", his thumb rubs my jawline while he continues to hold my neck. He leans further in and presses his nose to the nape of my neck, "Your intoxicating scent of raspberries making me dizzy?"

My eyes lightly close on their own as I let out a soft sigh. His lips slowly come in contact with my flesh and it felt like I was on fire and he's cooling me down. I bite onto my lower lip as his lips trail soft kisses down to my collarbone, "The sharp pull in my chest by being so close to you? Your soft noises making me want to tear off your clothes and claim you right here right now?"

I instinctively reach out and hold onto his soft locks. My fingers run past the side of his scalp, revealing how he had super short, almost trimmed hair on the sides yet longer on the top and back of his head. My fingers bury into his hair and gently tug onto them.

He lets out another chuckle before pulling away and looking down at me. I could only imagine the mess I looked like right now. My brown hair all messy, my face flushed and my lips parted with eyes half closed. I breathe heavily although his grip only allowed so much.

He slowly shakes his head, "Tsk tsk... Can't believe you think such things faze me." I instantly furrow my brows and while my brain kept repeating the lines in my head over and over to make any sense out of it, my heart painfully squeezed.

"I had heard how desperate the pack wolves are for their mate, chasing after the bond all their lives", I freeze at his words, my dreams slowly shattering with every single one of them. "But you", I couldn't tell he was smirking again, "are just pathetic."

I stare at him in disbelief. He is my mate, is he not? Mates are supposed to love us, aren't they? "But...", I try to keep my tears away, "but you...you're my mate..."

"Hah!", he tightens his grip again but I don't pay attention. My focus was all on the male in front of me, my destined one. "Would Moon Goddess really tie me to such a weakling?", his words stop the time. Everything goes still.

Of course...what was I expecting? If every wolf except only two, hates me, why would my mate be an exception? My wolf stirs inside. It's rare for me to feel her inside. Most of the time, I forget I even have one but right now I could tell how she was howling in pain and sorrow.

I lower my gaze, defeated. And worst part of all, I already liked him. I had already imagined a life with him. "Answer me!", his raised voice brings me out of my trance and I look up at him. "I asked, who else lives here?!", he repeats.

"Just me...and my boyfr--", I stop myself. Even if my mate already dislikes me, I don't want to push him further away. After all, what chances do I, the weakest wolf in pack, have of surviving a rejection? "A pack warrior", I correct myself. His tilts his head so I continue, "A pack warrior lives here with me... He protects me from danger and rogu--", I correct myself again, "...attacks..."

"Is that so?", he leans in again, making me go stiff. The closer he got, his scent made me dizzy. I just wanted to be with him, feel his touch on my body, his canines in my neck where his mark should be. But he doesn't want me.

Just then the front door knocks loud. My head lightly turns and the male pulls away from me again, looking at the exit of the storeroom. "Your knight in shining armor is back.", he lightly growls. The door knocks again.

"Claire! Where are you? Open the door!", I hear Harry’s voice ring in my head through mind link, "Can't you hear me knocki--", the link breaks as the grip on my neck tightens more, cutting off the air supply. I frantically pat on his arm to ask him to loosen.

"You think I can't tell you're mind linking?!", he snarls at my face. "Your eyes glazed over! So now you're begging him to rescue you?!", he thunders and I let out whimpers. He loosens the hold and I desperately suck in air. "No more mind link.", he warns and I nod.

Suddenly my phone rings in the kitchen. I look at my mate in panic. He growls again before pulling me away from the wall and against his chest, "Listen to me, princess. You're going to answer the phone and ask your loyal knight to leave! Say anything else and I'd kill you both!"

I know he expected me to nod but I just stare at him with tears in my eyes. Would my mate really try to kill me?
