Chapter 13: Kushina
"Yeah, I noticed that he has a tendency to do that." Zeus snorted, coming a bit closer to the woman and settling against the wall near her.
"You are Zeus, right? I have seen you running on the rooftops a few times. You have startled me quite a lot." Kushina smiled weakly, gently stroking her son's hair. "Hiruzen must be worried about you. That masked man might attack again, Minato really shouldn't have brought you here."
"Don't worry, miss. Despite my age, I can manage this much." Zeus answered, yet the tension still stood firmly in the air. It seemed like Kushina was extremely anxious for Minato and her kid's well-being. Hence, Zeus tried to make her relax a bit with some small talk, gesturing at the kid in her hands. "What is his name?"
Kushina delivered a weak smile. "It's Naruto."
"That's...an interesting name," Zeus answered with a pause. In all honesty, though, the name wasn't to his liking. It didn't strike him as something extremely grand. Staring at the kid and his tiny blue eyes, Zeus suddenly felt something distinctive.
For an instant, Zeus closed his eyes, solely focusing on this feeling. He reopened them with newly gained vigor, and a frown painted his face. This kid...also stank of divinity, though it was barely noticeable. At first, Zeus thought that another god from Heaven decided to reincarnate here, but Zeus didn't recognize this celestial power.
Instead, it reminded him of the monster currently violating the village. It was different, but it had similar aspects and smell, causing Zeus to get stuck in his thoughts. How did this newborn kid have any connection to a tailed beast? Or was it the doing of some lesser god, who put bestowed a few chosen ones from this world with some blessings?
'Perhaps this world is much more interesting than I expected.' Zeus thought to himself. Lesser gods, those who have achieved incredible levels of strength, yet were unable to ascend, rarely participated in mortal matters or even more spared their hard-gained divine power. Thus, it was surprising that he had met two creatures with divine powers on the same day.
Realizing that he went unnaturally quiet, Zeus opened his mouth. "I am sure your kid is destined for great things."
"I am sure about it as well." Kushina continued to stroke her kid's hair, her eyes shaking with some worry. "However, besides those great things, I want my son to feel happy. In a world like this, people sometimes forget to simply enjoy their life and instead strive for glory."
Zeus snorted. "I completely agree with you. Sometimes, the better choice is to give up responsibility for the sake of having some merriment."
Kushina raised an eyebrow, glancing at Zeus. "I don't even know what "merriment" means. Are you sure you are a kid, Zeus? You talk like an old man."
"No, I am actually a god who has lived for an uncountable amount of time, and has decided to reincarnate for the sake of not losing his mind," Zeus answered.
Kushina remained silent for a few instants before bursting out laughing. A few tears formed at the corner of her eyes, as she weakly brushed them away. "That was funny, Zeus, but I don't think a god would make such a decision."
"Why not? I believe that gods aren't any different from humans. After all, they also have emotions, food that they like the most, and individuals that they hate or love."
"Well..." Kushina stared at the ceiling, her voice no longer carrying the former anxiety. "Perhaps you are right. Perhaps a god is nothing but a strong human."
"Yeah..." Zeus mumbled to himself, lowering his voice so that Kushina wouldn't hear. "That's exactly what they are."
"Zeus, you know, if something happens to me and Minato today, could you take care of Naruto? I know this may sound like a ridiculous request, especially since you are a kid yourself, but I am just asking you to be like his friend... and check up on him from time to time, making sure that everything's alright." Kushina talked slowly, her gloominess returning. "Would you...be able to do so?"
Zeus grew silent. He wasn't sure whether he had a proper answer to such a question, but the desperate woman before him simply needed some type of validation. "I will be able to do so, even though I am sure nothing bad is going to happen."
"Thank you, Zeus," Kushina said when Naruto suddenly started crying loudly, tears falling down his cheeks. Seeing this, Zeus extended his hand forward, pushing some chakra there as electricity gathered at his fingerprints. That electricity stretched and extended from there on out, separating from his body and taking the form of a butterfly.
It flew towards Naruto, circling around his head a few times, gathering his attention. Ultimately, he stopped crying, instead extending his little hand forward to try to catch the butterfly. With some manual control, Zeus landed the fake animal on Naruto's hand, and he grinned in statisfaction.
Kushina looked at this scene with a satisfied gaze.
However, the butterfly disappeared when Minato suddenly appeared in the middle of the room. He looked much more exhausted and had some more blood on his attire, and there was a troubled expression on his face.
"Kushina..." Minato mumbled, his face filled with apprehension.
"I know, Minato," Kushina answered with a forced smile, rising from the bed with Naruto in her hands.
Zeus stared at the scene from the side, a confused expression on his face. Had he missed a chapter? Was Kushina some kind of secret weapon that could take out that monster?
"Zeus, It was nice talking to you." Kushina glanced towards Zeus, tears already forming in her eyes. Minato also smiled at Zeus and threw his signature kunai toward him, which Zeus caught with one hand. Then, before Zeus could even open his mouth to say something, they both disappeared, leaving him in awkward silence.
At that moment, everything clicked in his head. Kushina and Minato...both of them already knew that this attack wouldn't have the ending they desired. Besides, Kushina probably didn't even require any protection in such a secluded place, and Minato simply sent him here to protect him.
Sighing, Zeus put his hands behind his back, resting against the wall.
Since Minato went to such an extent to guard him against the danger, Zeus decided to honor his efforts and rest here till the chaos ends.
