Chapter 9: Chapter Nine: Friends

After Tiana left for work, Kendrell decided to call his dad. Just as he was about to do that, Jordan's call came in.

Without hesitation, Ken answered. Jordan wasn't as goofy as Malcolm. He seldom joked. But he was still a 'nice' person.

" Hey man. Sorry I didn't call earlier. I was so exhausted last night, I'm fatigued. I woke up about an hour ago." Jordan said, apologetically.

" No p bro. I understand. Seems like I'm the only one who's not about to get so busy." Kendrell said.

" Why? You didn't get the job?" Jordan asked.

" It's a long story dude. It seemed as though an interviewer has a history with my dad or it's in her blood to kill people with her horrible attitude." Then he went on to narrate everything that happened. Everything except for the fact that he called Gloria, Ms. Gorilla.

The only person he told was Tiana.

" She definitely does. How else did she know your dad's occupation. It's not as if you were asked to fill in your parent's occupation like you're still a kid. " Jordan said.

" That's the point dude. I was about calling my dad. I'm sure he must know something about her. " Kendrell said.

" Yeah you should. And don't think about it too much. I know this is like the third try, but you still have options dude. And there's still a lot of opportunities. You are an amazingly intelligent person so you don't have to fuss about it." Jordan advised.

" Yeah. Thanks a lot bestie. " Kendrell said with a small laugh.

Jordan wasn't a fan of the 'bestie' term, so Ken and Malcolm often teased him with it.

" Have you talked to Malcolm today?" Jordan asked.

" Yep. We spoke earlier. Why? Do you want him to play cupid for you?" Kendrell asked with a grin.

" Yeah right. I asked because it seems he has rubbed his craziness on you. You know it's contagious, you can contract it via the phone too." Jordan said and Kendrell chuckled.

" Yeah. But I can never be as crazy. Anyways, thank you dude. I appreciate your concern. " Kendrell said.

" Sure. That's why we're friends. Why else would I be a friend to people like you and Malcolm." Jordan said grinning, while Ken chuckled.

" It could also be because you want us to matchmake you and a pretty lady. You know, we've got pretty ladies around us" Kendrell said.

Kendrell had a sister, Claire and his mother, Constance. Malcolm had two sisters, Kate, Jade and Lauryn being their mother. They were all very beautiful women. Malcolm previously dated a fast rising model but they broke up because she didn't want a future with him. Kendrell was currently dating Tiana. Jordan didn't have a sister and he had never dated. So they often made fun of him.

Jordan scoffed.

" It's very obvious you are in a good mood."

" All thanks to Tiana. " Kendrell said with a smile on his face as he thought about her.

" Yeah yeah lover boy. I gotta go. "

" I know right. I have tissues, just incase you run out. Or do you think wipes are better for tears?" Kendrell asked.

" Goodbye asshole." Jordan said.

" Goodbye bestie." Kendrell said with a wide grin, as he dropped the call.

Now he had to call his dad.

______ At the Hospital ______

After a short debate with herself, Morticia decided to brush her teeth before having breakfast. After doing that as swiftly as she could, Morticia rushed to munch the meal Jenna had brought.

Jenna prepared butter pancake and a fizzy cocktail drink with bubbles at the side. Taking a bite, Morticia was in awe. It was perfect. Unlike the kind of pancakes she always prepared. Morticia munched like she was new to eating. She didn't notice when she picked up the last pancake. Dipping her hands in the flask, again, her fingers joined together, as there was nothing else to pick. She looked inside the flask, almost as if she was searching for needle in haystack blinking repeatedly at the empty flask. She pouted.

" Isn't there anyway I can eat my 'pancake' and still have it?" she asked no one in particular.

She remembered that she hadn't touched the cocktail yet.

'' At least you're still here" Morticia mouthed to the non living cocktail. She vowed to sip slowly.

By afternoon, miss 'slow sips' had already forgotten she ate or drank anything because she finished it, as soon as she started eating and drinking. She had little discipline when food was the matter.

Before she could continue sulking, the doctor walked in. He was the doctor who had attended to her the previous night.

He did the routine check up on Morticia.

" You are doing pretty better now Miss Morticia."

They had conducted a blood test the previous day. It is one of the first things they did. First, confirming if she was pregnant or not and if she had any terminal illness as it was the first tests conducted on patients who were rushed to the hospital. Then later tests to check for any vitamin deficiency.

" These are the results from the blood test we conducted yesterday. It was accidentally switched up with another patient. You both have the same name. The ward number saved the day, which is why you didn't get it earlier than expected. Apologies miss." The doctor said.

" It's fine doc." Morticia said as she received it from him. While she was glancing at it, the doctor continued,

" You are iron deficient. You need to eat lots of nutritious meals and take lots of iron tablets to recover completely. These are what you'll be needing to recuperate. I suggest you take it seriously. You might suffer from lack of blood anemia if you neglect them." He said handing her a list of prescription.

' Oh dear, where do I get the money for all of this' Morticia thought inwardly.

As if that wasn't enough, he continued,

" You should be discharged by tomorrow morning, latest. But you should make sure you get plenty of rest, when you get home."

" Oh. Okay."

The doctor was a bit surprised by her reply. He was used to seeing patients elated about leaving the hospital.

What he didn't understand was that Morticia knew she had bills to settle. He was oblivious to that.

' Where do I stay if I eventually get out of here. How do I even leave this bed? They won't even let me see sunlight, talk less of leaving to find Money.' she thought inwardly, unconsciously gazing at her legs.

' You can lean on Jenna, that's not an issue' a voice in her head whispered.

" Shut up! Shut up! Shut up! Don't say that again. She's done a lot for me. I don't want to and can't be a burden to her any further." Morticia said as she schooled herself, that thought, forgetting that the doctor was still in the room.

The doctor;

*_*

" Are you okay Miss?" The doctor asked.

" Huh?"

" You mumbled a few seconds ago. Is there a problem? "

" I did? I must've thought aloud. I'm sorry. But it's okay. I've heard all you've said and I've taken note. Thanks doctor. " Morticia said.

' That didn't look like 'thinking' to me' the doctor thought inwardly.

" Ok then. " He said as he turned to take his leave.

Reaching for the knob...

BANG!

The door was slammed on his face, by non other, than Jenna.

" What the heck is th... Oh My! Doctor! "

" Are you okay?" Morticia asked.

" I'm so sorry. I'm so so sorry doc. " Jenna apologized to the doctor who was massaging his forehead.

" It's okay Miss. Just be more careful next time. For the sake of your friend too, so you don't send her in to coma." he advised.

" I'm so sorry. I promise to be more careful next time." Jenna said apologetically.

" I hope it doesn't hurt much?" Jenna asked.

" No need to worry miss. I'm okay. I was about leaving." He said, as he tilted his head towards the door. Then Jenna realized she was standing in front of the door.

" Okay doc. Byeeeee" Jenna said with a smile as she wriggled her brows.

" What a weird pair of friends." He said as he shook his head and chuckled when he remembered how Morticia was scolding herself. She looked beautiful though, he thought.

" And that's how ya let ya crush notice you... by banging a door on his head. Way to go Jenna!" Morticia said with a mocker smile as she applauded Jenna.

" Yeah baby girl. You should be taking notes you know. Ya learn from the best." Jenna replied with a smile of her own.

" Wait, you knew he was here?"

" Of course not. I was only playing along Ms. d..." Jenna paused barely mid way as she remembered what happened the last time she called Morticia Ms dumbdumb.

" Atleast he's noticed you." Morticia said with a grin and Jenna giggled.

" To top it off, he's always going to remember me when he sees the swell on his forehead." Jenna said with a small laugh while Morticia looked at her in disbelief.

" You are such a crush!" Morticia said.

" What were you going to do, if he had told you it hurt him a lot? "

" I would've kissed the pain away." Jenna said with a wink while Morticia facepalmed.

" So how have you been? " Jenna asked.

" I've been better. And how was work?"

" It was how it's always been. Stressful and emotionally draining. " Jenna said.

" Always remember to look out for yourself. " Morticia said not wanting to pry.

" Yeah. I bought this for you. I figured you might need something nutritious." Jenna said handing it to Morticia.

'' Thank you Jenna. But why are you doing all this for me?"

" Because, Y has a long tail and two branches."

Jenna answered.

" Thank you so much"

" Yeah. I just came to check up on you. But before I leave, there's something I want us to talk about and I know you've been trying to avoid it but we have to face reality." Jenna said and it caused Morticia's heart to start palpitating. She didn't see that coming. But she knew where the conversation was heading.

" Yeah, go on." Morticia said as she tried to keep a straight face.

" We both know that you are fit enough to leave the hospital. And I know we're just getting acquainted and It's not in my place to pry, but we have to spell out Morticia. You don't have a place to go from here, or do you? And you don't even know where to get money to settle the bills? It's obvious you don't have a phone to begin with. So, what now? You're gonna have to leave here at some point" Jenna said, looking at Morticia whose gaze was fixed on her fingers. Someone who knew her well, could tell she was uncomfortable, because whenever she was scared or uncomfortable, she often looked at her nails.

Seeing as Morticia kept mute, Jenna continued,

" Listen, I know you are in a really tough situation, but you have to face reality. You can start by saying something."

Morticia had had the plan of sticking to what is, and just letting things pass. She wanted to wing it since whenever she planned something out, it didn't end up happening even close to how she had planned or imagined. But it seems she had to face the inevitable this time. She couldn't run away.

" I don't know Jenna. I'm a crazy over thinker but I didn't want to think about it this time. I don't have a plan or an idea as to what I should do. I don't even know what to say to you right now. " Morticia said as she struggled and pinched her laps so she doesn't break into a sob. She didn't want to cry or make Jenna feel emotionally blackmailed. That was the last thing on her mind.

" It's okay Ticy. I understand. I don't want you to feel like I'm forcing you into things but I live alone. So you I would love to have you as a roomie. You shouldn't worry about that. I barely know you, but we can start from somewhere, right?" Jenna said.

Somewhere in Morticia's heart, she felt relief. But, ' What if she's doing this because she feels like she has to. I don't want to be a burden to her. What if Morgan eventually finds me again? I don't her to have problems because of me' Morticia thought with a frown.

Seeing the frown on her face, Jenna was confused.

' Does she dislike my proposal? Could it be that she doesn't trust me enough? Did I say something wrong? ' Jenna thought.

But at this point, Morticia didn't know if she should say thank you, again. She was grateful, but she didn't even know what else to say.

" Umm, Jenna, Thank you. This might sound crazy because I've said this to you for like the umpteenth time, but it's because you've chosen to help me for the umpteenth time too. I.... I don't think I can accept your offer. You see, I have a history. And it's not a very pleasant one. I don't want to be a burden to you. Thank you so much for everything, but I just can't accept your offer. " Morticia said, unable to look at Jenny.

Just as Jenna was about to say something, a nurse opened the door and walked in.

" Good day ladies. Doctor Collins asked me give the Patient this. " She said handing Morticia a card which contained her data and the reason she was admitted to the hospital.

Jenna had settled Morticia's bills, so she was to be discharged by evening since new patients were admitted and it was a private hospital that couldn't take in too many patients. So patients like Morticia had to leave, since it wasn't so severe and her recovery was speedy too.

Jenna being the person who had settled the bill was to sign before Morticia was discharged. It was the rule of the hospital.

Turning to Jenna the nurse asked,

" You're her friend, right?

" No, I'm not. "

Morticia suddenly felt crestfallen. The way Jenna had quickly said she was not her friend, stirred up a really really sad and unpleasant feeling in her. But she had to school facial expression.

" Because you have to sign and fill in your relationship with the patient. " The nurse stated.

" Ok then."

" But why is that?" Morticia asked no one in particular.

" She settled the bills ma'am." the nurse told Morticia.

Morticia looked from the nurse and Jenna repeatedly, as if trying to assimilate what the nurse had said. Seeing as the air was getting thick,

" What? You think I'm a broke ass bitch? huh?" Jenna asked with a funny expression.

Morticia;

*_*

" Excuse me ladies." The nurse said before she headed for the door.

" Jenna..."

" I have to go Morticia still got work to do, lunch break is almost over. Enjoy your lunch. See ya later. " Jenna said as she stood and picked her purse in a hurry.

" Jenna"

" Yeah"

" Why were you quick to say you're not my friend? " Morticia asked with a straight face.

Now, Jenna wasn't expecting that!

" Well.... I... I didn't want to make you uncomfortable. How would you feel if I had said yes?"

" Happy"

Jenna didn't know how to feel about her answer. But she knew she felt like smiling, she really did. Butt she had to hold back.

" Oh, really?"

" Yeah. Really"

" Well I didn't think so. Cause you were quick to reject my offer like the stranger I am. "

" And you were quick to say I'm not your friend. Quick to deny me like the stranger I am."

" Woah Morticia! Didn't expect this in a million years. So you're feisty?"

" Listen Jenna. I said that because I was putting you first. There's a lot you don't know. Like why I was under the rain that night. " Morticia said.

" So is that a yes?" Jenna asked.

" What?"

" A yes to my offer. I just need to know."

Now that Jenna knew that Morticia was concerned about her, she was sure she wanted to take the leap and see where ever it leads the both of them.

" Well.... I... would love to. I d...."

" Ok then. I'll come pick you up this evening, with my car. "

" You have a car?" Morticia asked.

" Byeeeee Ticy." Jenna said as she blew her a kiss.

Jenna had just confirmed all she wanted to know.

She didn't exactly need a yes!
