Chapter 7: Chapter six: "Doctors are for the sick".

KEITH

Whew! My first day at school was a blast.

Not only did I reunite with my friend, I also made a new one. Langdon is really nice. And I've become popular too. I'm Sofia Corona's best friend. To some people, I'm actually her boyfriend.

I hit off great with her friends too. I really like Linda. She's the friendliest, and she never runs out of things to say. Barbara,or Barbie as she prefers to be called,is so cute. Almost as cute as Sofia.

Almost.

Malia creeps me out. Really, she does. But she's a good person.

"You're smiling, kid"Kevin said, his eyes on the rearview mirror.

"I can't help it"I replied, grinning.

Kevin is a cheerful, chatty young man. We get along perfectly.

"By the way, boss asked me to give you this".

"This" was a brand new smartphone. My eyes widened with a pleasant sort of shock.

"Percy did?"I asked, staring at it.

"You guys are on first name terms?"it was Kevin's turn to be shocked.

"Is that weird?"I asked.

"Hmm..." he mused"probably not, though that luxury was reserved for Monalisa alone."

Monalisa.

I'm guessing that Kevin doesn't know I killed her. Percy did order all those who knew never to tell, after all. Besides, I'm pretty sure Kevin won't be so nice if he knew.

The telephone was ringing when I walked into my room. I rushed to it and grabbed the receiver in both hands.

"Keith"Percy's voice was calm.

"Hey. Uh... thanks for the phone".

"Do you like it?".

"Yes. I really do. Thank you".

"Good".

I couldn't help but smile.

I know it's probably really hard for Percy to keep his sister's murderer around, and I'm really happy for him... he seems to be doing better with putting the past behind him.

I hear it helps people heal. And to take the first step towards healing requires courage like his- to admit being in the wrong, and to try so hard to make amends.

"How did you like your first day at school?".

"It was wonderful".

"Good. And how is Sofia?".

"Cute as ever. And very very happy".

"That's good to know. Make sure to rest. I'll see you in the evening ".

"Bye".

ISABEL

I stood at the door, watching Percy speak on the telephone.

Who's he talking to? He sounds kinda nice.

I waited until he dropped the receiver before walking over to him.

"Percy, are you okay?"I asked, dropping my black doctor's bag on his desk.

"I didn't send for you, Doctor Stanhope"he replied.

"I know"I replied calmly "but your secretary did".

"Is Miss Boxer your boss or am I?".

"Percy. Please. She was just worried about you".

Percy rolled his eyes and was just about to say something when he was suddenly seized by a violent fit of coughing. He pressed a snow white hankie to his mouth and coughed into it.

"Percy!" I called in alarm.

I reached out to touch him, but he slapped my hand away. When he finally drew the hankie away from his lips, it was red with fresh blood.

His blood.

I stared, horror and panic spreading inside me. Xilmei Boxer had told me about this, but seeing it for myself terrified me.

Percy appeared completely unruffled.

"How long has this been happening?"I asked, reaching for my bag.

I'm going to check his throat first.

"That's none of your business"he replied.

"Of course it is. I am your doctor".

"Doctors are for the sick"he retorted, picking a sheet of paper in a bid to dismiss me.

It's always like this with Percy. He tortures himself by constantly hiding his wounds and infirmities. I'm his doctor, yet I'm always more concerned about his health than he is. Makes me wonder why he even bothers to keep me around.

I refused to be dismissed. I remained just where I was, waiting for him to look at me, but he did not.

"Percy, you can't keep ignoring me".

"What do you want?"he asked, his eyes never leaving the sheet.

"I want to help you. For all I know, you could be suffering from throat infection,a major heart disease, food poisoning or even intestinal cancer. If you keep this up, you'll die".

"Why should that bother you?".

"I don't want you to die!"in my exasperation, my voice came out louder than intended.

He always does that to me. Shatters my calm demeanor in seconds without even trying.

Percy lowered the sheet and fixed his ice cold eyes on me. An involuntary bolt of panic shot through my spine and my knees felt weaker.

"Why waste your affection on someone like me?"he asked"what could you possibly hope to achieve?"

My eyes widened.

How?

I made sure to conceal my feelings for him.

I've always loved him. Since he was seventeen. Since I was twenty three.

Five years ago.

I had just graduated with a degree in medicine from a prestigious university in the UK. My drug lord father was friends with the then Mafia boss, so I had gotten a job as his doctor immediately after graduation.

I had been in his bedroom, tending to the bedridden man, when a young blond boy had walked in. What first attracted my attention had been,of course, his beauty. Then his expressionlessness, and his blunt, emotionless voice. His eyes had been empty, but I could tell he had been broken. There had been something so fragile about him that I had gone after him when he left the room. I remember standing beside him on the balcony, watching the blood drip from his profusely bleeding palm onto the white roses below, and later binding the injury with my violet hair ribbon.

I had spoken to him for a moment, and I don't even know if he had been listening. I had thought of nothing else for the rest of the day.

But my fragile blond boy had vanished the second became the Mafia lord.

Yet I still loved him.

I still love him.

A sharp pain on the side of my neck snapped me out of my reverie. I started, slapping to the spot. There was blood on my palm when I withdrew it.

Instinct made me turn sharply towards the door. A thin blade had been imbedded in the rich mahogany.

A blade... he threw a blade at me. He missed on purpose. It's a warning.

My knees began to tremble, almost knocking together.

Percy pulled a drawer open and took something out. He stood up and strolled casually over to me. My fear did not even let me pay attention to the blood trickling steadily from the cut and dripping onto my milk coloured blazer.

"Why are you still alive, Doctor Stanhope?"Percy asked, binding the cut with my own violet ribbon and knotting it at my throat"you've served your purpose. Being who you are and knowing what you know, you're just a threat to me now. Why haven't I eliminated you yet?".

Fear enclosed my heart in a steel fist. My breath came out in whistles. My throat closed. My knees buckled and I hit the floor, tears burning my eyes.

I kept seeing a certain memory. A memory I had spent the last three years struggling to erase.

Blood splashing in a crimson arc. Dark, icy eyes, soulless and entirely empty of humanity.
