Chapter 2: A talk in the dark

Sitting in relative darkness, Arturo drank some water before leaning his head against the concrete wall.

"Richard, while we're here, I'd like to ask why your birth certificates are fake?"

Richard, who was sitting on the ground, took out a cigarette and lit it, revealing part of his face with the light of the lighter, something serious "It's not that they are false since I am Mexican, but they are a reconstruction of the original documents.

After arriving in Mexico, I returned home but my documents had been lost, so I had to hire the services of what was left of German intelligence in the country.

I had to pay too much but they were able to recover my documents although from what I can see it was not enough to go unnoticed by a person like you."

Arturo shook his head and sighed "The mistake that gave you away was the stamps, whenever foreigners or forgers make documents they forget the bad infrastructure of Mexico outside the cities.

So they assume that the seals are always changed but almost always these take a long time to change or even do not.

But now that you talked about the German intelligence network, do you know what happened to it after the war?"

Richard just sighed before blowing out some smoke "The last thing I heard is that he completely disintegrated although in the end who knows if it's true, but if you really want to keep up with that intelligence group.

You should look in Chiapas, I heard from some colleagues that a Japanese and German submarine recharging base had been built in that place before the war.

The place should be near a freshwater river deep enough, but I don't know if it's real, but that's all the information I can give you."

Arturo raised his eyebrow before taking a deep breath "To think that as a detective I would end up in a situation like this, but it wouldn't be new to me.

What I am going to ask you is something completely serious and I would like you to answer with great sincerity because once we leave this place they will possibly take you to a military base.

Do you have any idea how the Soviets got to the ranch the ants or why they are in this place?"

Richard stared into the darkness for a moment before exhaling a little smoke "Maybe it had something to do with what was investigated in this place before the 2 world war, which is why many Germans settled in the mountains and other places.

Some investigated natural resources and others fanciful things such as legends or myths that were spoken in Mexican communities.

There was even a documentary made about the benefits of pulque, but it may be that the Soviets may have found that information before or after the war.

But that would only explain the reason why they are in this place but not why they were soldiers of the Red Army in Mexican lands, due to the weapons they had they were well trained.

That can only mean that they have a complete base in this place although that represents another question since if they have a base they have a way to transport their supplies but it could even be worse and that they even have clandestine factories that produce those weapons."

Arturo felt a chill when hearing that "Do you know any way to distinguish if a Soviet weapon is created in a factory or in a clandestine place?"

"There is a way but I don't know if that method is still used by the Soviets but from the weapons they used I can assume that if you check one of their PPSH machine guns they should have a serial number near the beginning of the barrel.

Those numbers indicate the year of production and the state factory they were made in, but guns not made in state factories do not have those serial numbers on that part.

In general, they only have a serial number created in the wood of the handle, in addition, the PPSH is an easy weapon to create by hand, I can tell you this because in Poland the partisans created their versions of that weapon supported by the Soviets.

Knowing that and the fact that they are not using more modern weapons could be the answer but then I can only tell you that someone opened the door for the Soviets so they could enter the country.

As simple as a weapon is to produce, it requires certain machinery that should not be easy to come by, also because of what you told me about your incident with the KGB-backed rail workers' strike.

I can only assume that perhaps the water is deeper than you think or that the problem is older than we can assume because although I am not an expert in history I know that at least 2 former presidents could have paved the way for the Soviets.

One older than the other, the first would be Lázaro Cárdenas and the other with Plutarco Elías Calles.

But in the end the truth may cost you your life, Arturo, so you must be careful because unfortunately you will be at a point that is too dangerous, I for my part may already be dead or in the process of being.

Well, I highly doubt that the KGB will leave loose ends, however if I die I will only ask you to bury me in this place since regardless of the destruction of San German my ancestors lived on this land for generations and it is where I want to be buried."

Arthur scratched his chin and waited patiently in silence for the army to arrive to remove him from the ruins of Richard's house, though as he waited he could only think that he would have a lot of work to do.

Although at that moment he remembered the last loose end "Richard you know who killed the cemetery caretaker, I don't think I ever heard you say the woman's name."

Richard dropped his cigarette butt to the ground "Ana Hernandez, she is perhaps the culprit of killing Juan and she is a member of a small religious sect in the region.

I don't know who is the leader of that group of cultists but you must be careful if you ask about the Gray Hand, they are a sect that lives in hiding and hides in the mountains.

From time to time they recruit young women and children into their ranks, as far as they have a strange idea of Christianity and their so-called leader seems to know how to brainwash his followers, although I would not doubt that they may be the bogeyman that Soviet soldiers use in this place to go unnoticed.

Although I could also be wrong and the two groups are not connected but in any case if you investigate I would recommend you to go to the ranch the four horsemen about 30 kilometers away southeast of San German.

That place is the last point where recruited people are taken."
