Chapter 54: Her Blood

The car rolled down the empty road, bathed in the soft glow of streetlamps. Tall trees flanked the road, their leaves rustling gently in the breeze, occasionally accompanied by distant owl hoots.

The car veered right onto a wide dirt road, slicing through the dense trees, its engine breaking the tranquil silence.

Its headlights illuminated the way as it moved forward, eventually coming to a stop by a small, clear lake. The headlights dimmed as the engine shut off.

I hovered in the air a few meters from the bank, perched on a thick tree branch, observing two agents in dark attire with white gloves.

They quietly opened the car's trunk and carefully removed Eden's lifeless body, placing it by the lake's edge after a cautious glance around.

Returning to their vehicle, they started the engine, executed a skillful U-turn, and departed in the same direction they had come.

I waited until their car reached the main road before calmly descending near Eden's body and deactivating my power.

Gazing down at her, with her twisted neck and pale face and lips, I couldn't help but sigh in sorrow, shaking my head.

After all the time and effort she'd dedicated to serving the Company, obeying their every command, and protecting their interests, this was the fate she met.

Her lifeless form discarded by an obscure lake on the outskirts of town. She had no family and possibly no friends to push the police for a thorough murder investigation.

In a few days, her case would be deemed unsolvable, joining countless others in the archives, and she would be forgotten.

That was the world—a harsh and unforgiving place. Despite humanity's efforts to uphold civility, the law of the jungle still lurked beneath the surface.

The strong triumphed while the weak faded into obscurity, their stories lost to history.

...Luckily for her, I wasn't going to let that happen. In this timeline, she wouldn't remain dead, not on my watch.

She was the ally I needed. Eden was someone who, after gaining powers, had misused them for personal gain until the Company found her.

You could call her a lost soul, drifting across the country without purpose or direction, subconsciously searching for a place to belong or a cause to embrace.

That's where Mr. Bennet had capitalized on her vulnerability. With one move, he provided her with a home and a purpose, shaping her to see the organization's directives as a means to better the world with her unique talents.

But over time, she had begun to doubt their mission, slipping away from the organization's control, especially after they spared Sylar despite his crimes.

So, she was someone I could rely on when the time came to confront Sylar.

After all, considering what I was about to do, she would owe me a significant debt—a life in exchange for another.

The law of reciprocity worked well in situations like this, when someone owed you their life, quite literally.

And I intended to capitalize on that debt. After all, who knew when I might need someone "persuaded" or brainwashed? Sometimes, it was crucial to cultivate powerful friends...

Exhaling sharply, I bent down and grasped her lifeless body. With every ounce of strength I could muster, I clenched my teeth and hoisted her, placing her cold, lifeless form over my shoulder.

Her weight bore down on me, making me unsteady, but with sheer determination, I managed to regain my balance. Her legs dangled in front of me while her head and arms hung behind my back.

"Here goes nothing," I whispered, inhaling deeply. With a focused thought, I activated my power, reducing the weight to a manageable level that allowed me to move gracefully through the air.

Relieved, I wrapped my left arm around Eden's waist, ascended, and with another thought, shot off toward my home at top speed.

In mere minutes, I landed on my roof, descending into my room. I canceled my power, placing her gently on the bed, then reactivated it and flew out of my room.

This time, my destination was Claire's house, and I arrived swiftly. From above, I spotted Agents strategically positioned around the area, heavily armed and on high alert.

It wouldn't be long before they started causing alarm among the neighbors...

Shifting my focus to the elegant house below, I adjusted my position in the air and descended, slipping through the roof into Claire's brightly lit room. I immediately deactivated my power.

At that very moment, the bathroom door swung open, filling the room with the fragrance of scented shower lotion.

Claire emerged from the bathroom, her curvaceous body wrapped in a white towel, accentuating her contours and ample bust. Her smooth, wet blonde hair and glistening skin caught the light.

"Ah!" She jumped back and screamed when she spotted me, instinctively turning away.

"Shh, Claire, calm down, it's me," I whispered anxiously, pressing a finger to my lips, my eyes darting to the door behind me.

"Is something wrong, honey?" Mr. Bennet's voice echoed from downstairs, and faint footsteps signaled someone coming up the stairs.

"It's okay, Dad," Claire's initial shock faded and she hurriedly explained, "It's just a spider."

"Alright, honey, but please don't scream next time," He replied, and I heard his footsteps receding. "I swear, you're going to give me a heart attack one day."

"Sorry, Dad," Claire apologized, attempting to sound composed as she turned her attention back to me.

The sound of footsteps disappeared. With a frown, Claire faced me, her arms crossed beneath her ample bosom.

"Care to explain why you're in my room so late when you should be resting at home?" Claire asked sternly, her tone admonishing.

"Lower your voice, and I'll explain later," I replied, turning away to inspect the white and pink closet by the door. I pulled open a drawer.

"Found it. Knew it was here," I said with a grin, retrieving a medkit from her drawer and placing it on her table. I opened it, extracting a small syringe.

"My syringe? What on earth do you need that for?" Claire asked incredulously, her voice hushed. Suspicion creased her brow. "Wait, how did you even know where it was? What's happening?"

"I don't have time to explain right now, so please stay calm and listen to me," I said earnestly, holding the syringe. "I'm going to need something from you, and I need you to promise not to freak out."

"Alright," Claire stared at my face for a few moments, taking a deep breath. "I have a feeling I'm going to regret this. What do you need, Xander?"

"...Your blood."
