Chapter 8: Memories and Identity (2)

I wasn't very surprised that she could see me. Although I wasn't sure I could somewhat sense that she noticed my presence. After hearing her introduction, I decided to introduce myself as well

"Yes, nice to meet you. My name is Dusk Jones. I have the same first name as your son.", I said with a polite smile.

She didn't seem very surprised to hear that I share the same first name as her son. This was further confirmed by what she said afterwards.

"Yes, I know. This meeting was something I had asked for myself, after all."

'Oh? This is getting interesting.', I thought after hearing a rather intriguing piece of information about my confusing situation.

"Would you please care to elaborate?" I requested with a curious look.

"Yes, of course."

The young mother seemed prepared to satiate my curiosity. After a short pause, she started her explanation.

"You see, I am a half breed. My father is a human, while my mother is an elf. Due to this, I have some of the characteristics of an elf. One of them being, the ability to sense 'life'. Or souls. This is also why I am able to see and converse with you right now. To my child and almost any other individual, you are invisible. They cannot see, hear, smell or sense you in any possible way unless they are an elf with this ability."

'So right now I'm here as a spirit. This somewhat explains my appearance. After all, it shouldn't be possible for this body to exist in this world. That would only be the case if I was "transmigrated" instead of reincarnated.' I thought as I started rubbing my chin.

This still doesn't explain everything so I urged her to continue while subconsciously coming up with many theories,

"Please continue."

"Yes. Besides my ability to converse with spirits such as you, I also have another ability. One that is unique only to me, at least to my knowledge. It is 'foresight'. As the name suggests, I can see glimpses of the future."

'This keeps getting even more interesting by the second.', I couldn't help but think admidst her explanation.

"With my spirit perception ability, I could sense an anomaly in my child right after he was born. His soul.....seemed different. This caused me to worry that something dangerous might happen to my little boy if the situation was left unresolved. So I took the liberty of trying to see his future to find out more. When I tried that however, something restricted my ability. I couldn't see anything. It was as if my boy's future was confidential information...." The half elf stopped for a moment as if to arrange her next words carefully.

During this short pause I couldn't help but think that spirit perception was a badass name. I thought for a split second if I should learn how to name abilities from her but alas, there are much more important matters to discuss.

"That 'something' turned out to be....", Aerith continued as she didn't seem to notice my inner struggle. But jokes aside, her next words caused my face to stiffen ever so slightly.

"A goddess."

I guess it shouldn't be surprising that the goddess was the one interfering with Aerith's ability. I, a person from another world, was involved after all.

"I got to know about her interference as she herself informed me by speaking into my mind when I was alone. She informed me of various things. She informed me about....you, Dusk Jones. She informed me that on a like any other, after a high fever my little boy would change and mature drastically as a person, only a few months after his 4th birthday. That it would happen because the consciousness of 'Dusk Jones' would be awakened within.", she said with an unreadable expression.

Hearing this, I asked a seemingly obvious question to confirm my suspicions.

"Do you resent me for taking over the body of your child?"

It would be reasonable for her to hate me. Any loving mother would resent a persona who's taken over the body of an innocent 4 year old kid.

However, her response was something unexpected.

"No.", She said as a slight small starting forming on her face.

"I don't resent you. There is no reason for me to. After all, at their core Dusk Nightmoon and Dusk Jones are the same person."
