Chapter 18: If there is a hole, there is a way

"Unfortunately, I can't use ocular genjutsu; one would need two Sharingan for that," Kakashi said. "At the same time, you would need at least the two dots on both of your eyes to be able to use them like that."

"That won't be a problem," Sasuke said and then used half of his training orbs to make his Sharingan reach the next level, and then he showed them to Kakashi.

Sasuke knew that he would be able to reach that level in his battle against Haku, that was why he didn't use his training orbs, but it couldn't be helped now… the more he improves his genjutsu, the better off he will be in the future. Still, to think that the cost would increase like that… it will take a while to train that much or to get the training orbs necessary. The problem with that was the fact that the Sharingan only gets experience in combat. Real combat…

"... I guess we can work with that," Kakashi said after he recovered from the surprise. "We would benefit a lot by having someone with that kind of skills on the team."

"All right then, when did we start?" Sasuke asked while showing a small smile.

Kakashi didn't reply to Sasuke; he wasn't sure yet if he should teach Sasuke… he knew about his past, and he knew Itachi as well and how proficient he was with genjutsu and his Sharingan combined. He felt like he was throwing more fire into the feud between the brothers… then again, Sasuke was a lot calmer than he had imagined.

One didn't have to be a genius to know what Kakashi was thinking, and if Sasuke was good at anything, it was to understand the silence of others. In the original storyline, Kakashi didn't seem like he hesitated in looking after Sasuke since they had some similarities and even fighting styles. Still, the current Kakashi was a lot more somber.

"You don't have to do this if you don't want to," Sasuke said. "If it is too much trouble, then perhaps I should look for someone else or learn by myself. The scrolls of the clan have been sealed away, but there are others out there that can teach me as well. There is also Kurenai."

"... My apologies for my hesitation," Kakashi said after a long sigh. "It is all right, I am your current teacher, and that won't bother me."

Kakashi began another long-ass explanation about the basics… Sasuke was starting to think that he really liked the sound of his own voice while he was saying all that. In any case, a genjutsu is created when a ninja controls the chakra flow of a target's cerebral nervous system, thereby affecting their five senses; this is frequently used to create false images and or trick the body into believing it has experienced physical sensations such as pain. Genjutsu affects activity throughout the prosencephalon structure of the brain; humans, dogs, and other species of mammals are. Therefore, all are affected by genjutsu. However, all insects lack such a structure in their brains, so they do not even notice it. So, they are impossible to control.

Despite its usefulness, genjutsu is rarely employed; most shinobi prefer the real, tangible effects of ninjutsu and taijutsu over the imagined effects of genjutsu, which hold little influence over the physical world. The difficulty of performing genjutsu in the first place presents an additional barrier to its use: genjutsu requires precise chakra control in order to manipulate the target's senses and advanced intelligence to make the illusion convincing.

"Your control over chakra isn't perfect, but you are on the right path and learn fast," Kakashi said. "So, we will work on the basics. To put it in simple terms, a genjutsu user is using their own chakra to hack into the victim's mind. They do this by tapping into the victim's five senses by feeding their chakra into the victim and, by extension, controlling the flow of the victim's chakra in their cranial nerves. You will have to train your ability to control chakra through your eyes and affect others that look directly at you. There are other methods for an Uchiha like you to do the same, but you will focus on that. We will practice after lunch."

Naruto didn't come to have lunch, but that wasn't the first time, so no thought too much about it. Sasuke recalled that he was supposed to meet Haku in one of those instances when he was training alone. Still, things would be fine… Sasuke thought that it would be fun if he were tricked by that very convincing trap.

"A man once said that if there is a hole, there is a way… Good luck, Naruto, confirming if that is true," Sasuke thought. "But damn… what a convincing trap… forget about it, don't think too much about it."

After lunch, Sasuke, Sakura, and Kakashi headed toward the room that they were using for the genjutsu training. Sakura couldn't use ocular genjutsu, but she could learn how to fight it, and agaisnt that one, if she succeeds, she will be able to fight the others as well.
