Chapter 2: Chapter 2: Your Friendly Neighborhood Goddess

Yulia

Yulia had been cleaning up after her husband for 500 years. 5 centuries. He would come in, fuck a bunch of shit up but technically save the day, and then she would come in after and have to do a lot of the heavy lifting setting things to rights. During that time, he would usually have already gotten himself into some new breed of trouble.

Just recently, he had saved one of these fledglings from a servant of darkness. Full on rescue and everything. He got her clothes, sent her back to the infirmary, and then left Yulia to take care of her while he went back to fight said servant of darkness.

Inexplicably, despite the fact that he had some of the best reflexes and senses of anyone ever, as well as strength and durability that were basically unmatched, their contest had ended in a draw. The problem wasn't physical. The problem was psychological. Every single time Yulia would suggest this, however, her husband would deny it.

Now that the girl was sleeping and Yulia had arranged for her to receive counseling later, she was free to seek out her husband. That is exactly what she was doing right now. If she could find him before he got himself into some new mess, then maybe she could head it off at the pass. Hopefully.

At first, she tried to find him by listening for him. She quickly gave up after remembering that he was quiet enough that she would likely be unable to hear him if he didn't want to be heard. Then she tried smelling for him. There were numerous scent trails, but all of them were old. They seemed to overlap crazily and seemed to have a beginning but no definitive end.

Finally, she broke down and used the method he had given her for this explicit purpose. She closed her eyes and focused on the connection between the ring currently on her left ring finger and its counterpart on his. The pull was strong, which meant he was still in this dimension, and some deliberate deviation from following it ensured he was actually rather close.

She opened her eyes again, to make sure she wouldn't accidentally walk through anybody, and walked straight towards her target. From the infirmary to her quarry was a mere 550 meters, and so when she reached her target she had in fact expected to find her husband. Instead, she had found a girl on the verge of freezing to death, who shivered as she warmed up in her hold.

There were, of course, many explanations for why her husband's ring was on this girl's finger, but all of them were interpretations she would rather not contemplate. These explanations were superseded by the ones for why the touch of a vampire would feel warm to this girl. All explanations led to her being critically chilled.

While Yulia would have liked to continue looking for her husband, she was not so heartless as to leave this young mortal girl to her fate, so she returned to the infirmary. There, the process of bringing up the body temperature of a hypothermic patient was carefully explained to her.

First, they had to allow her body temperature to normalize to Yulia's. Yulia was actually colder than standard room temperature, so this would allow her to warm up without the risk of afterdrop induced shock. Then, they had to rather quickly warm up her body far beyond room temperature, to roughly 80 degrees. Finally, they would allow her to normalize to room temperature.

That would have been complex enough, but apparently the girl was also suffering from acute malnourishment and dehydration. This meant that while Yulia was doing all that, the girl would have to be on an IV in an attempt to increase her fluid levels.

The doctor refused to check for or address any further issues until those had been more or less resolved.

Because Yulia was so much larger than the poor girl, she only had to enclose her in her wings for about 5 minutes before they could move on to stage two. Stage two apparently involved some blankets, a heating pad, and some bricks that had been set out by the fire.

This worked quite well, and within 15 minutes the girl had started sweating. This was a problem, because she still didn't have too many fluids in the first place. Yulia was tasked with lifting the girl so the heating pad and bricks could be removed and holding her until she started shivering. Afterwards, she would be set back down and covered with a single blanket.

Meanwhile, they were still waiting for the first IV bag to fully be used. After the first saline bag, they had to switch it out for one that focused on electrolytes. Then, finally, one that was primarily glucose, which would hopefully allow the girl to wake up about halfway through.

After several hours of this, instead of waking up the girl settled into a seemingly normal sleep, so the doctor gave her one last saline drip before calling it a night and instructing Yulia to contact her or her morning shift counterpart if there were any major changes, such as the patient waking up.

Yulia was finally free to again seek out her husband, but she was also forced to confront the fact that this girl right here was her only lead. In fact, her husband had promised her to never take off or give away that ring. So, in order for this girl to have it, she either beat the shit out of a vampire warrior twice her size and hundreds of times her strength, or her husband was in fact this girl.

The first option made Yulia giggle in laughter for a ridiculous amount of time before she realized she was losing it a little bit. The second option made her curse as she realized that once again she had failed to intervene before her husband got himself into some new bullshit.

Should she still call them "husband"? Maybe she would stick with spouse, for now.

Anyways, she supposed that while this development was highly annoying to her, for some reason her spouse had almost died due to exposure of all things. Imagine having to actually care about environmental conditions.

Her spouse. Had almost died. She had never even had to contemplate that reality before, and the sharp pain that thought sent through her chest almost caused her to let out a whimper. A growing sense of panic began to claw its way up her throat, as she realized that somehow her spouse was mortal. Before she could lose it completely, she slapped herself hard enough to crack her cheekbone and release a small shockwave.

She was now certain that she was going to have to protect her wife. Yulia had taken on many roles throughout the course of their marriage, but protector had never really been one of them. In fact, the Weapon had always protected her. This would be new for both of them. Yulia knew that the Weapon would not take well to being protected, and might even turn rebellious at the notion. She could only hope she would cooperate.

To that end, Yulia made sure to record the scent of the girl in front of her. She noted that she smelled sick and weak, rather than just malnourished. Yulia was now certain that she could track her wife anywhere.

She was lost in her thoughts, so she didn't immediately register when the morning doctor walked in. He had to place his hand on her thigh to get her attention, and almost got the wrong kind for that maneuver. Yulia realized why he had done such a thing at the last possible moment and so refrained from deleting him from existence.

The average mortal male was roughly 5'10". Yulia was nearly 10 feet tall. Touching her shoulder simply wasn't an option so her outer thigh would have to suffice. Her inner thigh would have been unacceptable, regardless of the reason.

"Any updates on the patient's condition?"

"Yes, actually. She seems to be sleeping fine right now, but I smelled something sick and wrong in her. Would you be willing to run some tests?"

The doctor knew better than to have an opinion on why a patient who had been trapped in a blizzard in the nude would now smell sick, so he just started taking blood and saliva samples. He would have taken hair samples, but the patient had weirdly short hair, as if it had yet to grow in at all.

As the day wore on and the patient remained asleep, the doctor grew concerned. His concern intensified at some of the results he had gotten. With the consent of Yulia, who claimed to be the patient's spouse, he ran her through an MRI and even took a bone sample.

The results were surprising and appalling. He decided to do his best to put this from his mind, and began to prepare the patient for when she would wake up. If she woke up.
