Chapter 3: Pistachio eyes

🚬🚬🚬

"Can one of you please explain to me why one of my students is covered in spaghetti?!" demanded the principal, slamming his fists against the table and making the four of us jump in our chairs.

We were sent to his office after one of the cafeteria ladies called in a teacher and well, here we were, sitting in frnt of Mr. Rodriguez with our heads hung low and our eyes glued to the floor.

"And why in the world are two of my best students involved these shenanigans?!" He cried, throwing his hands in the air.

"Relax Mr. Roro," chuckled Killian coolly, making me flinch at the nickname. How was he so calm right now?! Does he even know how much trouble we were in?! He pointed at his own forehead. "You're going to bust a vein."

Our mouths dropped wide open as I turned towards him in shock. I glanced back towards Mr. Rodriguez's scrunched up face that boiled with anger, looking like he was constipated. But before he could flip the table and yell at Killian, Desiree came to his rescue.

"It was all their fault!" She protested, pointing at Eshe and I. "I was in the cafeteria and then Eshe just suddenly dumped water on my shoes! See?!"

She raised her leg and held her ankle, sitting in a funny position to show him her damp sneakers. Mr. Rodriguez squinted his eyes.

"I don't see anything," he said, leaning in and adjusting his spectacles to get a better look.

"That's because it's water," she huffed, dangling her foot in the air.

"Girl, put your stanky shoes down," snorted Eshe, lowering Desiree's leg.

"Besides, if it's water, why are you getting so worked up?" I interjected.

Desiree snapped me a glare and I stiffened. "Because she did it on purpose, nerd."

And that's when Eshe really got annoyed, hating it when other people bullied me. She was just as good of a student as I was, but the only difference was that she had more balls than I did. I've always been short and scrawny, wearing clothes that never really fit me (not by choice, I was just that skinny) with big round glasses that fell down my nose bridge, and since nothing about me was intimidating, it just made me an easy victim.

"Hey, don't call him a nerd," she snapped.

"And why not?" snorted Desiree.

"Because hunny, I have a million nicknames and you sure don't want to hear a single one of them," she smiled, batting her eyelashes innocently.

This is why I loved this girl so much.

Desiree and Eshe then started to argue, one accusing the other for the whole mess and vice-versa. I tried to step in and sided with Eshe, but my small voice just ended up getting drowned in theirs.

"That's enough!" boomed Mr. Rodriguez, making us stiffen. He took in a deep breath and started to rub his shiny bald head as if to look for his hair before letting out a sigh. "Alright, put aside the whole water incident, who dumped a plate of food on Miss. Io's head? Because the four of you can't be telling me that that was done by accident."

The room fell silent and we all shifted our gaze to the side. Eshe and I didn't want to throw Killian under the bus since it seemed like he was trying to help us, and Desiree probably didn't want to blame him since she's had the biggest crush on him since freshman year. But to our surprise, Killian voluntarily raised his hand.

Mr. Rodriguez peered through his spectacles, trying to retain his anger.

"And do you mind telling me why?" he asked, not even looking that surprised. Something was telling me that he knew who the culprit was from the very start.

Killian shrugged, not even trying to find an excuse. "I just felt like it."

Was he out of his mind?! Did he want to get expelled?!

Mr. Rodriguez tried to hide the satisfaction on his face. "Well, Killian, I've already gave you multiple warnings in the past, but this is definitely something that I can't look past by. I'm going to have to call your mother and discuss your behavior, I'm also going to have to suspend you from school so that you can reflect on your behavior."

He grabbed a piece of paper and started to scribble something before looking towards us over his square glasses. "The rest of you may leave."

Desiree and Eshe were hesitant at first but took the chance to leave while they still could, but I sat there, squeezing my clammy calms together and wondering just what in the world I was thinking.

I must be crazy, I really must be going crazy.

"Mr. Rodriguez," I murmured thickly. I can't believe that I'm doing this, and for him of all people. "I... I was the one who told Killian to dump the plate of spaghetti on Desiree. It was just a small joke, but I guess um, I guess it wasn't as funny as I hoped it'd be."

I knew that there was no way Mr. Rodriguez would suspend me since I was one of the best students his school had. Well, I at least hoped that he wouldn't.

The principal narrowed his eyes while Killian raised a curious brow.

"What do you mean Carter? Did someone pressure you to do it? Are you being bullied again? Don't be scared, you can tell me," he said, the lines on his face softening. My eyes fell to the floor, guilt crawling up my throat.

"N-N-No sir, no one forced me to do anything," I murmured, face turning slightly red. "I um, I did it on my own accord."

There was a small pause. "Is this true?"

I could feel all four pair of eyes stare at me and gave a small nod. "Yes sir."

Eshe was about to step in but I looked at her with pursed lips, giving her a look with my eyes to tell her not to. It was bad enough that one of was in this situation, there was no need for her to take the blame.

"Alright then," grumbled Mr. Rodriguez, putting the suspension slip aside. "The both of you get two weeks of detention," he said. "Now get out of here before I change my mind."

He stopped. "And Carter, I am very disappointed in your behavior."

"I'm sorry sir, it won't happen again," I said in almost a whisper, feeling tears fill up my eyes. I would have never imagined getting detention, never. I was supposed to be the good kid, no, I was the good kid. Getting detention was like sending me to prison, just the idea of it terrified me.

And yet here I was, getting two weeks of it for an incident that wasn't even my fault.

I swallowed the lump in my throat as the four of us left the office. I raised my head and accidentally met eyes with Killian's, never having seen them this close up.

I suppose if you wanted another boring and totally cliché description, they were glimmering green, a vivid color full of mischief and vivacity. Grass green, emerald, spring leaves, I'm pretty sure all those adjectives fit them, even if they were a little over-kill if you asked me. But plain "green" seemed to be an understatement.

So I settled for the color of pistachios, my favorite type of nut. Pistachios with the same crisps of brown of the dried skin inside the shells.

My body tensed as he slowly leaned towards me, lowering his head to my height and filling my nostrils with the scent of his cologne, which wasn't as strong as I thought.

I was expecting some kind of "thank you" or a word of gratitude, but all I got was a curious sentence that left me confused.

"I'll see you in detention, Jones," he whispered in a husky voice, low enough for only me to hear.

Jones? How did he know my last name?

He pulled away and I watched him leave, Desiree quickly scurrying after him and putting her arm around his, asking if he was okay and if he wanted to do something later.

Did... Did he just smile at me?

A/N: Do you guys like pistachios? I personally LOVE all types of nuts lol my friends even tease me for it 😅
